Beltangady: History Repeats - Man Dreams of Crore, Loses Rs 51 Lac!

Beltangady, Jun 26: Despite warnings after warnings and cases after cases, people seem to be still falling prey to bogus lotteries and trusting strangers with their life-savings. In the hope of becoming crorepathis, they end up as roadpathis, and what is worse, their example does not seem to be a lesson to other gullible ones.

In yet another incident, a man from Shimoga blindly believed a bogus SMS that told him he had won a crore, and ended up losing a whopping Rs 51 lac!

Not only did he lose the money, but also his house which he sold to become rich and four acres of land. He even borrowed additional Rs 32 lac from his friends, all for the sake of a crore which never came!

It all started when he got an SMS that claimed he had won a crore in ICC cricket lottery. Believing it to be true and not caring to check twice, he contacted the numbers mentioned in the SMS and did as he was told. For a whole year, he went on depositing lacs of money as and when he was told, only to realize when it was too late that he had been duped.

A diploma engineer employed in a well-known company, he was reduced to a pauper in no time. Now he has no house and no property, and is being dogged constantly by his money lenders.

Having lost everything, he decided to seek divine help and visited Dharmasthala on Monday June 25 night. He appealed to Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade and narrated his misery, especially his outstanding debt of Rs 32 lac which was giving him sleepless nights.

But as they say, what's done cannot be undone. All it can do is serve as a lesson to others and be a warning against fake lotteries.

A lesson well learnt. It only proves the fact 'If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is'.Pass it up or atleast check the facts before falling prey to it.

Technology has advanced so much that it is good as well bad. This guy got fooled with a simple bogus SMS. When you get such SMS or someone calls you on the phone that you won a big amount through a lottery or someone has left a big fortune, first tell them to show the money before you part with your hard earned money. People want to get easy money for free and this is what happens.

There are several ways to recognize a fake lottery email. No one even wins a lottery that they've never entered a lottery ticket. Unless someone has brought a lottery ticket, they cannot have won a prize. There are no such things as mail draws or any other lottery where no tickets were sold. This is a simply invention by the scammer to make the victim believe that they have won. The scammer will ask the victim to pay a fee before they can receive their prize. It does not matter that they say this fee is for courier charges, bank charges, transfer charges or processing fees, there are all make up by the scammer to get money out of their victim. All real lotteries subtract any fee and tax from the prize money. If you've received an email you won such lottery that means 100% scam or bogus...!! take care...

Time and again, such pathetic stories get published but unfortunately lessons are not being learnt. It is better that recipients of these messages respond by asking these kind hearted crooks to issue a demand draft for the lottery amount won, after deducting all the incidental expenses.

    Mr. Shetty,

All I see is a greedy dimwit biting off more than he could chew and eventually losing everything. I think it is fair to say that he has received his share of the "shock treatment" you desired.

That said, giving any authority the power to monitor, filter, and ban any sort of communication will pose a grave threat to our freedom of speech and expression, and that can really a slippery slope.
