Mangalore, Jun 27:
Eight persons from Dakshina Kannada district have been languishing in a Jeddah jail in Saudi Arabia for almost a decade, after being booked in an alleged illegal call routing case.

Saudi Telecom Company in four different complaints had alleged eight youngsters of making ‘hundi’ (illegal routing) calls, apparently for no mistake of theirs, said T M Shahid, member of coir board, government of India, addressing a press meet here on Wednesday June 27.

Repeated appeals to external affair minister S M Krishna, chief minister Sadananda Gowda, Saudi Arabia (Jeddah consulate, Jeddah parliament, Riyad parliament, Riyad consulate and Mecca parliament), to free them from the jail have borne no results, he said.

Hussain Ahmed Kudroli, Yusuf Mohammed Shafi and Mohammed Ashraf were taken away by the police after being charged in the first complaint. A fine of 2 million Saudi Riyals had been imposed on them. Nasir Mohammed, Fairoz Ahmed and Riyaz Ahmed were arrested next and were imposed a fine of  3 million Saudi Riyals. In the third complaint, Mohammed Ayub Kannur was charged and the fine amounted to 80,000 Saudi Riyals. In complaint 4, Mohammed Sharif was charged on whom a fine of 1 million Saudi Riyals was imposed.

Shahid said all these were hefty amount which the parents of the victims could not pay.

He said that the four had hired a room which previously may have been occupied by a group that was involved in illegal telephone service network. However, the group escaped and without any knowledge, these youths rented the same room, which was later raided by the police following a complaint by Saudi Telecom company. "As a result, the innocent youths were jailed and their parents in India made to suffer," Shahid said.

A K Mohammed, father of Nasir Mohammed (one among the jailed) said that the youths were arrested on March 19, 2003 and that he was told about the incident by his son’s friends in Saudi Arabia after 40 days. After obtaining VISA, he with his wife flew to Saudi Arabia in December 2006. They saw their son for the last time when their he was brought to the court for hearing. He claimed the youths have been charged for no mistakes of theirs. He also sought the help of the government to collect the hefty amount for their immediate release.

Mohammed Javed, Farweez Ahmed, D M Mustaf, Aslam among others were present at the press meet.

Saudi Government did what they had to do. These guys must have come legally/illegally but why they they did illegal jobs. This was against the Saudi Government and that is why they are languishing in the jail for such a long time. They tried to make fast money working in a foreign country.

Sorry to say, you speak about Saudi Arabia, without knowing what Saudi Arabia is.

If you have the capacity, please check with your president, where USA would be today, if Saudi Arabia did not help them during the financial crisis. Even today KSA, for USA is a hen with golden eggs.

Why do you think, the poor and uneducated third world workers come to Ksa if they are being illtreated by the Saudi's?

It might surprise you, that most of the cleaning staff come to work for much less than US$100/- a month, which does not include food.

Some come to Ksa by paying more than US$ 3000/for the visa.

It might also surprise you that these uneducated workers earn more than $1000/= month doing miscellaneous jobs, after working hours.

At the end of the day, what matters for the poor is how much they have earned and not how much respect they got.

Indian Embassy is the worst ever in the Middle East..No protection for expatriates at all.. The Philippians Embassy and Bangladesh Embassy atleast have concern upon their people.. If there is any problem in the middle east they inform to residents in advance and even take provisions to stop the people coming from the country to middle east. But Indian Embassy, i could say is just for name sake in middle east..Better to collect money and release the poor guys instead begging Indian Embassy.

These people caught when they engaged in doing so called hundi calls in their residence at sharafiya Jeddah. The bosses of theirs escaped from the sceen. These poor guys were arrested and to the best of my knowledge most of them are not carrying their ID (iqama) some are escaped from their actual sponsors due to different reasons or overstayed after performing umrah. But 10 years unimaginable. I was in jeddah for more than 20 years i know the indian consulate diplomats n their staffs are not taking much interest to solve this kind of criminal activities. I pray to god n request indian diplomats to intervene seriously to release these guys.

Mr Langoolacaharya Belman/USA, I found your comments in this specific subject is 85% true.

I differ with you about internet phony..yeah not stealing but with out license(illegal business) expats in question were indulged in commercial business.I tell you what in my area one of the Srilankan/Bangaladeshi/Indian established CALL CABIN LIKE felicities having more than 6 L.Ps each cabin and entertained customers from the around the world and mostly Chinese customers which might be fetched them millions of their home currencies!!!But US citizens never indulge in such illegal activities. What happened in our area was just a penalty of ten thousand S.Riyals and they were deported with out entering jail!

As far as this particular case concerned, I don't think only for that reason STC/court levied million of riyals fine which is definitively exuberant fine.I also heard that bypassing STC lines and making their own 'PHONY BUSINESS' which is a serious violations.

I was been in Kuwait for quite long time and presently residing in KSA.However, I did not come across any mistreatment by Saudis and importantly,Saudis are less occupied in utive post of most of the companies.FYI, Indians are more trusted and loved by Saudis and therefore more Indians are employed in KSA.

    People,

Saudi's are known for mistreating third world country's citizens, especially Indians.

Its nothing to do with religion, its because most of Indians work in Saudi are poor and less educated, so they think they could do anything with them without any consequences....

Now who is responsible for this, Indians themself or Saudis is difficult to answer.

What is happening here, these folks are keeping "Vonage Internet" phone and use that to make international calls and transfer them to local saudi number.

This is not stealing, here STC is loosing revenue...like private buses taking passengers in nationalised routes.

Looks like Saudis calculated revenue they lost and multiplied it by hundreds....

Sir Ismail KP ,now don't start your silly comments...I know what I am talking...I was working as Engineer Pulse Code Modulation-PCM, for Ministry Of Communications, State Of Kuwait from 1985-1990 and Kuwaiti guy who worked with me as an Engineer, Nabeel Salaama became Under Secretary Of Ministry Of Communication of Kuwait, and President of second mobile company in Kuwait, National Mobile Telecommunication Company-NMTC(Wataniya).

These types of things were happening in those days in Kuwait too, but we were making a list of these phone numbers from where calls were made and used to disconnect them and they used to pop up from some other numbers.

Any what Saudi's are doing with these poor guys in sad....

And I hope Ministry Of External affairs will study this case properly and make a representation to Saudis at highest level and secure their release.

Now if Saudis would dared to do this with US citizens, I think definitely not....even if they tried American Embassy would have intervened within hours...

    Jai Hoooooooooo ......

It is very much a possibility to get arrested in Saudi Arabia because of mistaken identity. But finally the truth prevails and the the innocent are let off, and normally no damages for wrongful imprisonment are claimed or paid, except in few cases.

This may happen in matter of hours/days/years/decades. Though it may not be possible for the Indian missions here to involve themselves directly to get them released, but the least they can do is to visit them and see that they are comfortable, and suggest ways and means for release. But unfortunately they care the least, only some Indian private organisations help those in need.

Considering the above case, unless there is strong involvement either by the Indian Govt missions or private organisations, the 8 may not see freedom for a long time.

I do have full faith in the sharia law which never convicts a innocent person, but the problem is some of those who enforce the sharia law are fallable, or make mistake in judgement

In those earlier days the so called 'Hundi' Telephone Business was done in a illegal way in Saudi, a lucrative business to had one. Now here the story tells otherwise where the real culprit were escaped,a story gets confused itself. My own experience to an extent in Saudi is that sometime the police here they will arrest you without proper document or the proof because you are an Expatriate came here to work on contract basis for one or two years, the matter stands upto that. You don't have any support system to fight back ,like in India. It is always advised to my friends that not to indulge in any kind of illegal business,a activity in Saudi Arabia, finish your contract peacefully and a return back to your homeland safely to join your dear one's happily .We pray to 'God' for thier release soon from the concerned jail and a reunion with thier respective family soon .

I fully sympathize with the youth’s who are caught in the “Hundi” call nexus and currently serving the long jail sentences and fines in Saudi Jails.
While we are talking about our government helping its citizens and our citizens being compared to the US, yes I guess we Indians are solely responsible for this kind of treatment by the foreign Countries. Our consulates abroad are busy making money charging its own citizens the hefty amounts for attestation, passports services etc but render no assistance when their citizens are in trouble in these foreign countries. It is also our greed to make some extra money, our Indian citizens get in to these kind of businesses abroad and end up at the wrong side of the law. Who is responsible for this kind of treatment by the Foreign Countries? A good question to ask. If we honestly introspect, perhaps we will get an answer to this question.

Well said Mr. Ismail Perinje, we can’t rely on this story since I believe too it is one sided story. But 8 years in jail is too much for our beloved youths. At least our Government should start seeking their release through proper diplomatic channel. But as you know, our Central Government especially like UPA Leaders, they all busy in serving Western or European or American Citizens only. Who cares for Gulf NRIs’? Gulf Indians, the Term “NRI” stands for “Not Required Indians”. We pay no Tax to Indian Government so they least bothered on our wellbeing. Now only hopes that certain Local NGO should meet Royal Family Members of Saudi, so that matter can reach up to Saudi King’s Office and then something will happen.

Really sad stories of our Mangalorean brothers, who will make understand of this Saudi's ? ? ? There is no humanity in them, what they will gain by keeping this poor young Boy's ? Human-being makes mistakes but this sort of small mistakes, can't make a big issue. They should go through complete investigation, instead of keep the innocent people inside the jail. Even they would have pardon, on the death of the Saudi King, as if in UAE they do, even most of the Arab Countries do. Even in UAE (Dubai) there are many mangalorian's are jailed since many years. But who will hear their cry ? Only God can save them, for them they needs our strong prayers to make this people's mind and save our Mangaloreans as well (Indians) Let's hope n pray for their betterment. Hope Almighty will hear our prayers n cry of their loved one's, so they will be released soon. AMEN

The 'HUNDI CALLS' has been reported in our area also police raided the felicity and attached all equipment along with Laptops.Later, all were deported with a fine of ten thousand Riyals.

Here in this specific cases, the people who used HUNDI CALLS DANDA earlier not caught and said to be escaped and later Mangaloreans checked in to the flat and caught illegally!!!I don't think fully reliable news but are there no date of calls and the people checked in later days registered checked in dates? There are some confusions and this particular case may refereed to NGOs like MASA/IFF which are pioneering in helping in SOS souls. It is important to note that those coming to Saudi Arabia need to adhere the laws of kingdom else face grave legal wrath which takes years to remain in the jail.
