Puttur: Scarf Row - KFD-Led Students Picket Ramakunjeshwar College

Puttur: Scarf Row - KFD-Led Students Picket Ramakunjeshwar College

Arun Uppinangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (RD)

Puttur, Jul 20: The Muslim students of different colleges across Dakshina Kannada district on Friday July 20 tried to lay siege to Ramakunjeshwar First Grade College, Ramakunja near Uppinangady, in order to express solidarity with the agitating Muslim students over the scarf issue.

Though the students had been protesting for a week urging the college authorities to allow them to wear scarves in the classrooms, the college authorities did not respond favourably and instead stuck to their rules. The authorities convinced the agitating students and their parents about the set rules and advised them to adhere to it. Accordingly, nearly 30 percent of the students attended the classes on Thursday.

However, not satisfied with the development, the members of Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD) embarked on ‘Ramakunja Chalo’ to support the agitating students, with backing from students of other colleges.

Only a few policemen were deployed at the spot, as it was expected to be a minor protest. However, students descended from all corners, out-numbering the policemen by a big margin.

KFD-led students arrived in buses, tempos, and other means of transport at Ramakunja under the banner of Mangalore University All College Students Union and sought the permission of circle inspector Y Jagdish to hold a protest march.  He insisted on a peaceful march till the main gate of the college and said that under no circumstances should they enter the campus.

Thousands of angry students threatened to jump the boundary wall of the college campus.  The college authorities were prepared to face the consequences and were in constant touch with the district police chief.

Amidst the slogans, ASP Anuchet ordered the agitating students to retreat as laying seize to any college is illegal and also since prior approval was not sought by the student leaders. The agitators retreated after presenting a memorandum to the college authorities at the gate.

Addressing media persons, SP Abhishek Goyal said that legal action will be taken against those who organized the mass stir without obtaining prior approval from the district police.

The college authorities clarified that the dress code has been in force in order to maintain equality and they will not budge to any demands based on religious reasons.

Uppinangady sub-inspector Rvi B S and Sampya sub-inspector Nanda Kumar led the policemen on security duty.

    Dear Suhail
Thank you for your response to my comments. Sorry to say that when catholic churches were attacked, catholic's made petitions, because they did not have the courage or guts to lay their lives for a cause they were fighting.

In actual fact, only due to the support from our Muslim brothers, at the right time, the conflict came to a sudden halt.

At the moment Muslims are doing well in Mangalore, in all fields and they have the capacity to get their demands legally, without public agitation and involving KFD students picketing etc.

Those who blame Mahathma Gandhi are donghys. He fought with British and bought independence to this country. But still we are fighting with each other in the name of religion. He devided the country so that people may live in harmony. Holy month of Ramadan has started. This is not the time to fight. Don't use abusive language against each other. Give solution to the problem and not inflamatory comments.

If students are really interested in studies, they should refrain from these activities and concentrate on studies for their own better future. Large majority of students are affected because of these handful of communal minded people. All these practice of wearing scarf, burqa, topi, should not be allowed inside the classes, they can wear it in public places. Its wise for the students and their parents to stay away from these communal groups.

Let them 'protest'. It's now good time for karnataka to take appropriate steps. It leads to same as like Godhara Incident. Now every thing is okay at Gujarat. Same happened in Mumbai where in they are praying at road blocking all the roads. All people from 'Sangha Parivar' started to do 'Maha Arati' at road disrupting all vehicles and after which riots started for next 2-3 months. If they have guts let them continue. Will be given good lesson.

In Singapore/Turkey/France wearing Head Scarves/Veils is totally banned. Followed by Belgium/Denmark. Same should be introduced in India.

If you ban head scarf, please ban tilak and mangal sutra too inthe colleges as its too is a symbol of particular religion... Ban face cover and allow head cover... not a problem.. head cover is the symbol of submission and respect.. The sole purpose of uniform attire is to treat every student equal irrespective of Caste,Religion, Rich, Poor, etc. Students go to college to study and not to promote their religion. I strongly feel all educational institutions should ban students from publicly displaying their religion in any form while in the College/School Campus irrespective of their religion.

1.Question here is SCARF and not BURQA.Management could have easily solved this problem by giving them chance to wear SCARF.Hard rules invited trouble.
2.Muslim students before getting registered into college, must read rules and regulations of the college regarding whether Burqa is allowed or Scarf is allowed or both are not allowed..
3.KFD is taking this issue into communal way.Very bad.It it continues like this, tomorrow no school or college will allow muslim students seat becasue of fear. Please think about reality. Please adopt "SIT-SHARE-SOLVE" method. At the end Future of children will be affected.I am a Keralite, but I adivse you not to follow Kerala type MORCHA in Dakshina Kannada in this matter.

Then we might have another case like Shivabagh girls hostel. In the photos above you cannot make out the gender of the people wrapped in black, might be he/she (God alone knows). I just cannot understand why there are so many boys protesting for the girls who are asked not to wear the scarf. They have some others interests. Let the community of the girls have a separate college for the girls who are interested in studying.

People don't appreciate the freedom they have in India. Thank god for the opportunities these girls have in India to Study with the support of public and others whereas in Islamic nations they dont even allowed to study these girls. Schools are for studies nd not to dress up religious cloth wearing unless and untill that college belongs to religious purpose. Please study or leave the college so that rest of the people can study Indian ways rather your fanatic ways. Please pratice your beloved religious at home. Feel free to wear what you like and pray any number of times. When school comes please behave and let others to live a peaceful life in India in Indian ways. Everywhere same story. Here in North America the white people listens to these scarf people at the end these scarf people fight for more religiou stuff and at the end fight for separater state then become Islamic state and then throw others out or mandate to become muslim. When chuches were attacked, Catholics had made several petitions to concerned ministry for justice to victims. You and I know what happened to those petitions..these young students are not asking for a separate classroom... They are not even asking permission to wear burqa or face veil.. All they want to know is why all of a sudden the college authorities don't want them to wear a head scarf while they were doing so all this time... When they took admission to schools why dint the school clearly say, head scarf is not allowed.. Let them say during admission itself... All this is happening because of RSS backed BJP.. They want to polarize the society and divide it on communal lines...Muslims have also given their blood for freedom of this country... We too have the right to live freely in our beloved motherland.

Muslim community purposefully set aside back, targeted, attacked, beaten, discriminated by fascist power since independent, at all times community questioned blamed their national interest & participation of the country, and this is not new news opposing scarf in school it is frequently happening several places and also it is not only in School it will happen in even military were Sikhs can wear turban & beard and Muslim can’t.

However this great nation’s constitution given clear right to practice religion by citizen’s own choice and how come it someone can practice it someone can’t even in same platform, Muslim organization only born after several years after all fascist ruled out badly to Muslim community.

And now it is prevailed BJP-Led –ABVP making disharmony in college campus for wearing scarf for Muslim students therefore what is wrong Muslim organization come forward to support to Muslim students for getting their constitutional right.,

Zameer, everyone is equal. There should not be discrimination. In institutions there are students and professors who follow different faith. If we get religion inside these institutions, everyone have their own culture style, fashion, and laws. Let us keep them in our heart and respect each other and also the institutions with an intention to learn about what God has created and how human being can use it do to develop and improve for us and for our future generation.

Human being is the greatest machine on this earth. We look at the creation of God and learn to develop technology which is good for us. Schools, colleges, and institutions are made to develop for the future of everyone. Every parent wants to see their children grow with knowledge, love, and harmony. Every person wants to be happy. Every person is made for each other. We all depend on each other. We are human being born from one family in the begining. Today we have multiplied with differences. Let us save this planet for our future generation then to divide and lose everything.

Those organizations with such "massive" support, should start their own institutions. Then they can dress/behave in the manner which satisfies them.

These students are not interested in attending college, rather they are only looking for starting communal issues. Please stay at home and let the college function for the other students. This is a democratic country and you have every right to stay at home if you do not like to attend college. Do not disrupt the classes.

Hallo Girls, Please go to school to study. not to protest. Remember those girls who do not even have the opportunity to go to school. You children of big shots have enough to spend, eat and dress. The girls who do not have enough dress to wear would not even have time to think weather to wear hijab or dress to cover their body. Please stop all this nonsence. The people those who support you to protest will not give you food to eat tomorrow when your family member does not have Job. Please wake up and stop fighting on religious name . Live a good life which is only one and free gift from God. and thank you.

Muslim Students if you do not wish to follow rules of the institution you are in, then please set up your own institutions and then you could have all the rules you want. But what is wrong here is you go to other institutions and dictate your terms for the simple reason if non Muslims would come to your institutions would you accept the change they are asking.

We dont want any public supports mr.frank. We know legally how to fight with these types of narrow minded guys. And from the above comments we all knows they are disturbing us from religiously to quit from the educations. But we are not going to give you up this time. We will fight for our religious rights and as well as we will go for higher education. Inshaallah in sk and udupi we will make our community 100% literate and religiuous.

Religious freedom is fundamental right.. By banning you cannot discourage Muslim girls getting education.. College has no right to ban scarf since it getting government aid.. Good move by Campus Front… Go ahead… today you shown the student power to communal element…

Its a nice move by students to protest against injustice of ramakunjeshwar college.dear brothers and sisters of india, i would like to bring ur kind notice that discrimination and injustice for indian muslims were very common from last two three decades. even when i was small i have seen and experienced it.when i was in 5th standard one of my classmate named sahul got 3rd rank in internal exam but unfortunately instead of encouraging him our class teacher was discouraged him saying u are short in attendance and scolded him.while am in 6th std in reply to students naughty child hood act (aking noice from ball pen) one of english teacher scolded him byari maga yake illege bandu sayitthi? nimage gujari vyaparave sari).Sir Abhishek, each and every day several protest takes place in udupi and DK district do they get permition? why it is while innocent students asking simple rights u r taking action against them? again injustice!

Muslim women have the right to wear scraves and burkhas anywhere they like, even in "dress coded" institutions, private and public places included. Sikhs are allowed to wear the turban covering the head.

A word to those picketing Ramakunjheshwar college.

File a case in the court of law, make petitions to the concerned ministry, to highlight your demands.

Using such kind of crude and uncivilised tactics to press for your demands, you will loose public support, tarnish your own names and organisations.
