Mangalore, Aug 15: The 66th Independence Day was celebrated at St Antony’s English Medium School, Cutinho Padavu Fermai on Wednesday August 15.

Elias Sanctis presided over the programme and Arun Kumar Shetty was the chief guest of the event. Correspondent Francis Cutino escorted the guest to the dais.

The celebration began with a march past by school children.

The flag was hoisted by Elias Sanctis. Soon after the flag hoisting ceremony a cultural programme was organised by the school children followed by drill exercise.

A short stage programme was also organised. School principal Anitha Voilet welcomed the guest with a bouquet. In his inaugural speech Elias said, "Celebration of freedom has much more meaning today, as it means that we are the government of our country. Today our nation is ruled by us. We need to go back 60 years and analyse how we came out of British power and our progress over the years. India will emerge as the strongest nation in the world by the year 2020, as per A P J Abdul Kalam. Today's generation is facing issues like corruption and injustice. Punishment for wrongdoers is a must. Kalam says there are three people who form a child's character - father mother and the elementary school teacher."

Vijay Kumar Shetty who was also present said, "Please show affection to your family. On this independence day you need to spread the message of harmony, peace and unity. Take the nation to new heights."

Usha compered the programme. Anitha Jyothi proposed the vote of thanks.
