Byndoor: Four arrested for arecanut theft worth Rs 5.6 lac

Byndoor, Jul 22: In a major theft case reported from Byndoor police station limits, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the theft of arecanut worth approximately Rs 5.6 lac from Royal Plantation godown in Hadavingadde, Shiruru.

The arrested have been identified as Santosh (35) from Nujibaltila in Kadaba taluk; Shanur Babulal Nawaz Ghazni (31) from Hindinagere, Kalghatgi taluk in Dharwad district, currently residing in Bhatkal; Khwaja Mohammad (26) and Mohammad Sadiq (27), both residents of Bhatkal.

Police have recovered 455 kg of stolen arecanut and the car used for transporting the stolen goods.

Masood Patel Bhatkal, the owner of the plantation, cultivates crops over 60 acres of land in Hadinagadde, Yadtare village. He had stored nearly 200 sacks of dried, husked arecanut in plastic bags inside the godown. On the morning of May 22, he discovered the front iron grill lock of the godown had been broken. Upon inspecting the premises, it was found that all 200 sacks had been stolen.

In response to a spate of similar thefts in the Byndoor region, a special investigation was launched under the guidance of Udupi district SP Hariram Shankar. The investigation was overseen by Kundapur ASP Sudhakar Naik, DySP H D Kulkarni, and Byndoor circle inspector Savithra Tej. Two special teams were formed to trace the culprits.

The teams were led by PSIs Timmesh B N, Naveen Borakar, and Vinay, and included personnel such as Nagendra, Suresh, Chidanand, Malappa Desai, Parayya Mathapathi, Ravindra, Ashok, and Chandra.
