Udupi, Sep 2: The Udupi unit of Kerala cultural and social centre (KCSC) celebrated Onam with pomp and splendour at Bannanje Narayana Guru auditorium here on Sunday September 2.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the programme, Manipal Institute of Communications director M V Kamath said that there are innate similarities between the Hindu cultural celebrations and Kerala.
"Kerala and South Canara were ruled by Madras Presidency under the British Raj more than 150 years ago. Kerala is a state now, and enjoys good relationship with the Kannadigas," he said.
"Keralites have contributed a lot towards Udupi, and even participate in the social and cultural activities of the locals. There is an innate bond between the lingual, social and cultural spheres of coastal Karnataka and Kerala regions," said Udupi ZP president Katapady Shankar Poojary.
Puttur's Mega Friends Club felicitated Kerala students of PUC and SSLC who scored high marks this year.
Retired employee of the department of posts and telegraph P T Maran was also honoured on the occasion.
Several cultural programmes were also showcased.
T Muralidharan of Manipal Syndicate Bank, KCSC president Subadrakumar, Ravindran Nair and others were present.
