We will do what is Good for the Country: PM

New Delhi, Sep 29, 2012 (PTI): Unfazed by the uproar over FDI in retail and other tough decisions, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today indicated that the Government may continue with the reforms process and expressed willingness to discuss issues with allies.

"We will do what is good for the country... reforms are not one-off process," he said. The Prime Minister was responding to questions on demands for rollback of decisions on FDI in multi-brand retail, diesel price hike and cap on subsidised LPG cylinders by the opposition.

When asked to respond to reservations expressed by allies that the recent decisions could hurt their electoral prospects, Singh said the issue could be discussed. "We are far away from elections."

Singh was talking to reporters on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony of new Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. During the week, the UPA coordination committee had discussed the issue of FDI in multi-brand retail and other decisions.

When his attention was drawn to allegations by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's that FDI was aimed at pleasing the US, he responded saying, "What has the US got to do with this. We are not a country to be dictated by others."

Asked about attacks on him by Trinamool Chief Mamata Banerjee, who recently walked out of the UPA, he said, "I am not bitter about anything." On the Supreme Court's opinion on the issue of auction of natural resources, the Prime Minister said, "We honour the judgement."

Sardar Satiya Gaya Hai. In Year 2002 when he was the Leader of Opposition Parties, himself wrote letter to President of Mumbai Trade Association to boycott the exhibition organized by then Government to study the possibility of FDI in retail sectors in India. The move was taken back since many even BJP led State Governments opposed the law and requested then PM to withhold the FDI in retail sectors. But same Congress Government rather I would say same person who then opposed the FDI now put red carpet to Foreigners to Invest in retail sectors. Everyone should question themselves that honestly do we need FDI now in our retail sectors? Will it create employment opportunity for mass? Will our retailers will benefit more from the scheme? Is there any chance to increase revenue to ex-chequer? If you have any answer for these all questions, even small child would say “to hell with FDI”

It is easy to comment about latest moves by UPA government about hike in Diesel and FDI . As a eduacated citizen we should know ecconomic stuation of our country . Due to fuel / LPG Gas subcidy and High crude oil prices in international market the government is struggling to cope-up with fiscal crisis. If we as indians will not act right now to control the ecconomy we will end-up like austrity in Spain, greece, Italy .

Just have a look at how many people liked your PJ. Your joke on tourism (where you spelt it as terrorism) in an earlier post was much better.

Just frustration is seen in the comments of Rakesh Shetty Mangalore, Rajesh Kuwait, Rahul Mangalore and Dinesh Poojary. If FDI was introduced by BJP government, then it would be a bold step for them.

Rajesh, Kuwait...India not dependent on any country thanks to bold steps taken by Manmohan Singh Government. BJP government fell at the knees of terrorists and their foreign minister accompanied terrorists to Kandahar for safe passage of terrorists. You don't have to worry about India instead worry about Kuwait as Kuwait needs US for everything. If US had not defeated Saddam, then Kuwait would have been part of Iraq and no idea where you would have been.

    Dear Mr. Gonsalves:

I fully agree with you what you said about BJP and stand with you. They are specialising in attacking Christians and minorities and their properties. SHAME!! They are cheats and do not allow Mr. Manamohan Singh to do his responsibility to the Nation of India. May God bless our PM and his job abundantly to fulfill the purposes he has undertaken for the development of our Country.

I urge the CBI to investigate the money in plenty loyally and truthfully offered to kargil war during NDA rule. Where is that money. Poor soldiers got only bullets. Later the bjp lost ballets/votes. The majority of Indians like to seat bjp in the opposition since 60 years.
