Mangalore, Dec 5:
Deputy speaker of legislative assembly N Yogish Bhat on Tuesday December 4 informed that the survey work of Mangala Corniche project has begun and that a 30-km ring road will be constructed in the city based on the Gujarat model .

He spoke at a programme on ‘Town planning exhibition, study report submission’ organized by Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) here on Tuesday December 4.

The upcoming ring road will connect three national highways, NMPT and other important points in the city. "The road will be constructed without violating the CRZ rules, and will not cause any trouble to residential colonies. No toll will be collected," he said.

He added that the preliminary project report was already prepared after the study was conducted.

MUDA chairman Ramesh speaking on the occasion said that as part of the first phase of work in Mangala Corniche project, a 12-km stretch along Netravathi River and Kulur Gurupur River will be developed. Half a kilometer area near the river bank will also be developed along with the road construction work.

"No land acquisition will be done. Instead the people who possess land will be made partners in the project. Public will be kept informed," he assured.

"River bank tourism will be started through the project. Urva Market and Hampankatta areas will also see development," he added.

Twelve students who have been trained in Town Planning Scheme by the center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) Ahmadabad have prepared the preliminary project report after three months of study. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 4,000 crore. The project is expected to yield Rs 8,000 crore as profit after its completion, he said.

DC N Prakash, mayor Gulzar Banu, MCC commissioner Dr K Harish Kumar, CEPT University lecturer PVK Rameshwar among others were present.

PVK Rameshwar said that students of CEPT in four teams approached the local people and city corporation members and prepared the report.

The project is concentrated on areas like Sultan Battery, Car Street, Old Port and Morgan's Gate, wherein roads, drainage system, parks, play grounds and markets will see a makeover.

Our fishermen do not know that their houses are in CRZ 1. They cannot sell, renovate / repair / build on their lands. The Govt. has made their land useless and worthless.

We have heard rumours of our hon'ble. minister from our district getting it aligned as per his interests.
Anyways having a ring road, especially a corniche will put Mangalore in a different level compared to other cities in India.
But, as other readers have noted, interior roads need to be repaved and redone.
I would say, a bigger ring road, connecting Konaje, B.C.Road and Surathkal might be a better solution than this, but the proposed road will be a scenic drive.
By the way, dont forget to buy property along this proposed road, you will become crorepati in 5-10 years.

NO LAND ACQUISITION WILL BE DONE.... so says the Press report. Does that mean the river will be reclaimed and filled with mud to construct this new corniche ? Can anyone throw some light on this ?

CRZ is making land useless and worthless in many areas. The CRZ Dept.is over doing with their crazy laws. They want fish to survive and later to be caught by fishermen for food but construction is not permitted. What rule / law is this ?

No doubt its a good project a dream of Mangalore people. We can have a ring rod like Mysore and Bangalore thus save our time and fuel by reaching the distance within a short time. Such projects are useful for our next generation. Our MLA Yogish Bhat sometime back told that the work will be started by the end of 2012. Where there is will there is way. Lwt the MLA and others try to establish and implement thius project early and complete the first phase unlike our Bejai and Jepuu market which is stand still now.

Surely it is a good project for Mangalore's development. But, what about the city road project which is still uncompleted no-drainage, no footpaths, no parking, no safety measures. When are we going to complete half done work?????????

Every City has its’ own charm. Take the example of Mumbai we can see “Heaven like Development in few areas” as well as “Hell like life” in few areas too. Go & visit the area like Noida near Delhi and entire New Delhi Area, you can see the beauty of Cities but when it comes outer skirts of Old Delhi, there is no need to visit Hell again. Same way, Bangalore too has its own charm. Garbage was piled up once but it was just because of pure Employees, Employers as well as Contractors problem. Since Bangalore is saturated due to its limited capacity, the next target is Mangalore only. Unlike Bangalore, we have huge water resources and vast coastal area too. Road net works between Moodabidri to Mangalore via Gurupur is much required looking at the current flow of traffic. Dear Ismail Perinje, we know you feel pain ….. when it comes to BJP ruled States, but we have no option but to compare with Gujarat only since this is the only State in India developed beyond ones imagination in recent past. Shrimanji Yogish Bhat did say that Gujarat like development but never said that we have to follow the model of Gujarat. But we have to keep in mind that this kind of Project is not cakewalk as long as we have person like Jairam Ramesh (then) or Jayanthi Natarajan (now) in Environment Ministry.

Juliana, Udupi, This magnificent dream project may be a flyover throughout !? Instead of first looking at amenities like water supply & drainage in Mangalore City, these politicians are wasting public money on uneconomical projects.Certain areas like Kulshekar, Maroli, Padil etc still have no drainage facility and have to manage with leach pits.

For God's sake, please see that this political dream corniche is not built wasting public funds ( ADB Loan ), which our future generations will be burdened with increase in muncipal taxes.

Will Mr.Krishna Palemar BJP MLA be awarded this huge contract being a builder ?

The BJP wants to suddenly take up an uneconomical project. The BJP knows that time is ripe for them to leave Karnataka Governance. So make merry when the sun shines, is their new policy.

Infact it would have been ideal if a flyover was built across Hampankatta area.
