Mangalore, Dec 17: Close on the heels of a protest at Rosa Mystica PU College, Gurpur over the issue of students wearing Ayyappa Vratha, a similar protest erupted at the city's Canara PU College here on Monday December 17.

It is said one of the students, identified as Rakshith has been observing Ayyappa Vratha. He was on leave for a week on account of ill health, and on Monday when he went to submit his leave letter to the class lecturer, he was told to meet the principal.

Principal H Prabha Kamath reportedly told Rakshith to come clean shaven and wear the Ayyappa shawl inside his shirt. Rakshith grew the beard as part of the rituals to be observed during Ayyappa Vratha.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Rakshith said that he went back home after meeting the principal and meet his religious guru to discuss the issue. The guru told him that if he wanted to shave off his beard he must remove the Ayyappa shawl also and that his Vratha would be nullified.

Rakshith and his friends then approached the Sri Rama Sene for help. The activists of the Sene began a protest at the college campus demanding justice to Rakshith.

Meanwhile, principal Prabha Kamath spoke to the media and said that rules of the college were equal to all and every student must follow it. "The rules say that students should come with a clean shave and wear their id cards. Every student must follow it," she said.

Sri Rama Sene leaders Kumar Malemar and others took part in the protest.

It is time for either the Ministry of Education or competent authority to clearly give instruction what is allowed and what is not. These kind of distraction should be stopped. My sincere advise to students you are going to school/college to gain knowledge. These kind of trouble creating mentality should be avoided. Going to Sri Ram Sena is not necessary. He could have gone to either police or could have taken legal steps. The very instance of going to Sri Ram Sena is itself is questionable.

With the establishment of Mangalore & Manipal Universities, the D.K. and Udupi districts are now renowned as educational hub of the country, where a large number of foreign students also pursue their higher studies. We have to set an example before those foreign students. Therefore it is the responsibility of the college management as well as local students to ensure that peace and harmony prevail in the school and college premises. Any kind of religious or communal controversies inside the educational institutions must be severely dealt with by the concerned authorities. Such Ayyappa Vratha or Burkha controversies never erupted during our college days, how and why should they happen now? Severe action must be taken against those who are behind such nonsensical agitations. These narrow minded fanatics are just bent on destroying the future generation as well as the nation.

This is the same issue as that of the Burkha issue happening all the time...
But as the rules and regulations of any school in and around of Mangalore the Burkha is only worn when the girls enter their classrooms, so they do not break any rules..
    Neither any students should....
We all have been taught from the beginning of the school education that all are equal..
So why now this controversy. why cannot one go with rules...

As it is possible to visit Shabarimale at any time of the year students should be advised to observe the vratha only in summer vacation. The Shabarimale temple authorities can make official announcements or special arrangements for students. The studies, attendance will not be affected and this type of complications will not arise.

Dear Mr.Sunil, Both the colleges have taken steps correctly. Please understand the issue and then comment. The students are required to follow the rules unconditionally. The students are at fault in this case as instead of bringing parents to the college when warning was given, they brought anti social elements to the college.

Any religious activity or practices will be meaningful only when you love each other, when you have faith in god.It should be for "show" or 'publicity' .

You are the very people who oppose MNC's and now suddenly you praise them just bcos it suits you in this issue. How can you compare education with employment? Would you break the rules in your office? No. Bcos you know you will be fired. Im not saying Ayappa Vrata is wrong, but as students, our primary aim should be studies. Rest after your education is complete. Let me ask a simple question. Will you attend a job interview in this attire?
For those who say that the rules should be relaxed for one month, When you can skip class for a week (and now probably another bcos of this issue) Why dont you take a break for a month. Perform all the rituals and prayers then attend class. You will come out with flying colours in your exams.

First of all India is not a "Hindu's country", its a secular country. all religions have equal rights here.

Secondly the school has not discriminated against the student for being a hindu. The school is implementing equality among the students by not accommodating special requests based on religious beliefs (remember the burka incident ???)

Among all the protesters, how many have enterd University studies. By their dress code, one can very well come to the conclusion.

Rikshith, best thing for u, meet your lecturer and say sorry, abide the rule of the College. Sort out the issue with them. I do know, Canara College management is very kind hearted. But they do know, how to be tough too. Do not spoil your career. Otherwise no college will give u admission to University level of education.

These jobless goons are trying to enter schools and colleges to draw crowds. Innocent students and the Institutions become the scape goats. Unfortunately, the students, instead of ignoring such criminal goons, try to help them. Where was this black shawl "tamasha" for centuries int he past? How did it errupt now? It is all because these goons dont have a new agenda for getting popularity.
This black shawl is a religious belief from Kerala, brought to Mangalore by few migrants. AS long as it does not affect the common man, it can be tolerated. If it is affecting students and parents, then let all students and parents join together and support the school authorities in implementing rules, irrespective of religion. If someone is trying to play politics in school, throw him out by all means, including showing the student unity and see that they do not succeed. If you keep quiet, next time the students will come naked or come without shirt saying that it is religious belief. What will you do then. No matter what the reaction is, let the managements strictly implement descipline in school.

You have a very strange way of justifying issues . Infosys is a commercial organisation where people work to earn money. And in schools and colleges children/students come to learn, to gain Knowledge, cultured behaviour & communication skill and other character building activities and not to create problems for the institution and also not to disturb other students.
Poojas, prayers should be confined to individual’s home and in appropriate places like Temple ,Church, mosque, Gurudwara etc and our day to day life should proceed righteously in the true spirit of religion. It’s only the people and not any religion which guide the people to involve in uncivilised way to ruin the peace and harmony in any place which is totally unpardonable criminal act.

India is a secular democratic country and no one is objecting to your religious practice, but what an overwhelming majority are saying is:

1.You come to school to study, so stay by that and obey the rules.
2.If you don’t like the rules of the school then as you said “it is time for the RSS, BD and VHP to act…(and I will add) by building our own schools” and then you could do whatever you want and no Congress government can stop you.

Civilized persons should appreciate school principal for her bold step and dear principal please don't worry. We civilized hindus fully support your stand. Hindu religion doesn't teach hatred. It teaches love. We all are one. People of one nation and we need to unite. If we don't unite, some outsider will attack us and we will be slaves. So, true patriotic Indians, please unite. During working hours:
For teachers, teaching is the calling. Doctors/Nurses serving the sick.
For Workers, working, Farmers, it is farming and FOR STUDENTS it is schooling/studying and so on.
There is a saying, Work while you work, pray while you pray, play while you play whatever you do, do it whole heartedly.
God doesn't see our actions so much as he see our intentions.
Messing up will neither please God nor men nor ourselves.

The true spirit of Vrath, fasting or any religious acts should be done in such a way, no one should know of it accept yourself and your God. It should be totally personal. If your vrath is nothing but an advertisement and all institutions should bow down to your demands, then it is not Vrath but outside symbol for all to take pity on you. What a way to do a Vrath? As someone commented on this forum, if you are working for a professional company and if you were to do the Ayyappa Vrath, would you have gone to work with out-grown beard, lungi and a black shawl? True following of any Vratha or Pooja does not need to show it to outside world. We have to follow the true things ourselves. Being a Hindu I have been to Sabarimale couple of times. I have attended MNC interviews held with beard and without wearing shoe/chappal. Nobody questioned my beleif but only difference was I have done it not during my study years but later on. I remember our lecturer also used to practice vrath it was in early 90's. I think this issue should not be given that much importance and parents of the student should be called to school for getting clear picture. Unlike that time now people visit Sabarimale throughout the year, if students want to go they can opt for it during holidays no need to trouble their academic days.

Life is understood as a kind of journey or a pilgrimage that we make every day and every moment. It is a journey of interiority. This would be realized only when a person gets in touch with the divine within oneself. Indeed, the Principal taught the religion of the heart. God bless you dear Madam.

I WANT EDUCATED VHP, BD & SRS LEADERS READ MR. SHARATHS COMMENTS ONCE AGAIN. ONE DOES NOT BECOME TRUE HINDU JUST WEARING SAFFRON SHAWL AROUND THE NECK.

    "C Sharath, Mangalore Monday, December 17, 2012

Ayyappa Vratha has been & being misused by, especially jobless especially people associated with BD, SRS etc & certain sects of the people in & around Mangalore. Most of the guys, year round do all that they are not supposed to do from simple things like disrespecting people through the power of tongue to creating or involving themselves in Communal problems and they have this belief once in a year doing this Ayappa Vratha & calling ever body swami, swami they will be cleansed of all their misdeeds. This has been in fashion since the time I was in school and these guys at times pick young school going kids in their community or neighbourhood and convince them also to wear MaalE, even though if the kid does not the exact significance of it and affect their school & studies. This has become like a fashion to many of the people to excuse themselves from schoo/college/work/family & other social responsibilities. I have seen in my neighborhood people going to Shabarimala and once their pilgrimage is ove these people do not wait to croiss Kerala border to reach Mangalore. Party will start from Kerala itself with people getting bottles from the local on the way. This is unfortunetly the truth & I say once again am not accusing all the devotees but most of them YES. One can visit Sahabarimala not only during this time or during Jyothi, one can observe the vratha from home without any of these physical show offs and can wear the dress code at the last moment a day before or the same day of leaving also.

Lord does not ask for physical appearance requirements for its devotes nor a clean body. Its just our practice. It’s the clean heart and soul which with which we should seek Ayappas blessings. "

Obviously, if this student had any faith in God or any devotion in his heart, he would not have created this situation. He is wearing the black lungi and growing beard to show off or just to create problem. He is truly a disgrace to all the true devotees of Lord Ayyappa. Sri Purandharadasa has expressed qualities of such people in a song,"Namma Padumanabhanalli Lesha Bhakutilla Udaravyragyavidusssss
Managements of all the schools and colleges in all over India must take commitment and undertaking from all the students and their parents in writing at the time of admission to prevent such situations in future.
I truly appreciate the stand taken by Principal Prabha Kamath. I hope and also very sure Prabha Kamath will stick to college rules and regulations. She will be supported by all educated and cultured class of people.
This should be applicable to all the students irrespective of their religion, caste or creed.

Shame...shame...Political leaders are taking advantage of Religion. Political interference influencing students in Karnataka and spoiling their future helping them to go against the policies of institutions. According to me every student has to abide the institution rules and regulations if they want education. It is up to the students to seek admissions in institutions of their choice provided they abide institutions rules and regulations.

My question to Ayyappa vrathadharis. If there is a interview during vratha time for you for a good job,are you prefer to attend it with full of beard and black shawl around your neck.If some of your loved relative/close friend admitted to hospital and in hospital Doctor who is also a vrathadhari performs surgery/attends at ICU with black shawl around his neck.Becasue dress code/deciplene inside OT/ICU is must and crucial.Students on vratha,it is better understand the essence of devotion first and do it without disturbing others.Whether SRS volunteers are the authorised agents for guiding/helping Ayyappa vrathadharis?Mangalore is becoming a laughing stock with these type of stupidities.

I fully support this college Principal. Schools are the place where a student comes to learn from his teachers to prepare for his future life. His parents spend a lot of money for his or her education. Every rule has to enforce discipline of some kind and school uniform is one of them to give equal identity to pupils irrespective of how rich or poor they are. Let them wear what ever they want outside the gate of institution. If one goes to goones like Rama sene, BJD etc(most of whom are failed and uneducated) then they have no intention of studying and are there only to cause trouble and disrupt the education of other students who want to learn. It is high time all right thinking people of Mangalore stand up and be counted and support the Principal unconditionally.

One does not become head of an Educational Institution just like that! Discipline which is equal to one and all should be followed. Some devotees if I am not mistaken are not even allowed to chant 'loudly' in some temple premises! Then what is this in an Education Campus? The rules must be the same for everybody! Imagine instigating a strike against your own Educational institution! What kind of a devotee is that? Will the Lord like it? Trying to undermine an Educational Institution is to invite the wrath of the 'Goddess of Education'. This misguided students should first take up what is foremost in life, discpline themselves and then take to the 'Bhakthi Marg'.For wherever you go 'discipline' is a must.an 'Educational Institution' is no less than a 'Temple' and this might well be understood by ALL STUDENTS.

What is wrong with the new generation kids? Why children are going for Ayyappa Vratha? This shall not be observed by college going boys. Let them concentrate in their studies first. Parents should strictly disallow this Vratha. Will Ayyappa punish them if they do not observe Vratha? Kids finish your studies first and then go for it. Do not disturb communal harmony. By securing admission in a particular institution you are bound to accept/bind their rules and regulations!

Rules are rules for everyone. If he was on Ayyappa vratha he should have protested peacefully. I agree to the religious sentiments, but in schools or colleges, all are equal irrespective of religion caste status and creed. Similarly rules must be followed accordingly. There is simply no need to bring religious sentiments into picture here

Same incident happened in Belthangady College also few days backl. GURUPUR-KAIKAMBA/MANGALORE/BELTHANGADY.
Therefore,a unified decision should be taken by all educational institution under the guidance of Govt of Karnataka to avoid such misunderstanding between students/parents and school management.

School administration should obtain a written bond during admissions regarding the dress codes etc.,. These kind of religious silly things should not be allowed in any schools.

Dear school authorities do not bend to any social evil groups. I appreciate Principal Prabha Kamath's firmness in this regard. Let Rama sene or anybody have their own lawless college and admit students who wish to have their own regulations.
