Kundapur: Students Allege Harassment by Teacher, Boycott Classes

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur

Kundapur, Jan 16: Chaos prevailed at Koteshwar Government First Grade College here on Tuesday January 15 after staged a protest against a Kannada lecturer for allegedly harassing them.

The students claimed that Usha, a lecturer in Kannada, has been constantly harassing them in the classroom. There are also allegations that Usha is not regular to class and verbally abuses the students.

On Monday January 14 afternoon, Usha allegedly hurled verbal abuses at the girls and boys of second PU class and also called them 'children of the British' and so on, for which the students took offence.

On Tuesday morning, the students boycotted the class and demanded public apology from the lecturer. However, Usha, though she admitted to the students' allegation, refused to apologize despite the intervention of college principal Abhishekam.

Angered by this, the students staged a flash protest against the lecturer and shouted slogans against her.

Kundapur police arrived at the spot. Another round of talks was held in the presence of circle inspector Manjunath Kavari, sub inspector Jayaram D Gowda, and principal Abhishekam.

Finally, the matter was resovled after the lecturer issued a public apology to the students and the protest was called off.

In this corrupt world, teachers who are the back bone of the society are less paid, degraded and utilised even for election work, census work etc. Why cannot they ask bank employees? Politicians will make their children another politician and an actor will make his child an actor. But why not any reservation for children of teachers in education? It is quite natural for them to turn frustrated. If railway or bank employees go on strike for better wages, govt will bow it's head. But if teachers go on strike all including parents will curse. These students are not children of British, but ' monkey kids'!!!

Nowadays teaching is not a noble profession anymore. Not only student's but parents too don't respect the teachers. They take it for granted that teacher's are solely responsible for their kids. Parents can't take of their kids at home but expect the teacher to look after 32 students. No teacher will abuse the students for fun. If students are given the privilege to boycott the class then very soon teachers will start quitting their jobs. I think these students should have been suspended. It's only a verbal abuse and not physical abuse. Parents abuse their kids daily which is more serious than the teachers words.

Students are making a mountain out of a mole. They lack respect towards their mentors. These days, no child wants to be a teacher. You ask any child, what you want to become when you grow up, the child will say Engineer, doctor, actor,
dancer etc., but not a teacher. The teachers are paid less salary comparatively and the parents expect miracles. They do not mind paying more to the tuitions. One day will come children have to study on their own with the help of parents and classmates. These days there is no relation of guru and deciple but with the influence of politicians, students act like future netas.

Being a Kannada teacher Usha should not have told 'children of British' but 'Aanglara Makkalu'!!! Phew! None of these students seems to be harassed. Rather teacher seems to have been harassed by these unruly students. Look at the way they are standing in the Principle's chamber, leaning on each other's shoulders. Are they students? And who is that boy in black T-Shirt? How come he enters the Principle's chamber without wearing uniform? If the teacher is not regular to the classes, then the Principle should be bothered about it and should take action, not the students. It's we, the parents who have spoiled our children. Not long ago that parents insisted that teachers remained strict with the students and even punished them, if the need be. But today, forget about punishment, teachers cannot even ask students why they are late to college or why they were absent etc. If anyone does this, the parents will barge into school next day. If there is parent-teacher meeting, parents will give a slip saying that they are busy, are employed etc. But if such issues crop up, parents have ample time to encourage their children to revolt against teachers. Let the students remain students and teachers as teachers. Teachers are the potters who mould our children and make them into beautiful pots. Gold does not glitter unless it's polished thoroughly. Unless it is genuine issue, don't encourage students to revolt and go on protest. We pamper our children so much that they get accustomed to get the things done their way and as per their whims and fancies. Let not be the similar case with their education so that their future remains bright and safe.

Some section of media reported that she is verbally passing below....languages/ abusing female and male students alike.I think teacher had bad history of domestic problem else being an responsible teacher, how could she abuse in a filthy language?Apart from that teacher-students relationships are not holy or good as we used to be in the past. She was forced to make a apology and I think the enmity between her students will likely to continue.Best solution was to transfer her from the existing college to some other college.

This proves that the time has changed remarkably. During our time we did not dare to face our Teachers/Principal not of fear, but of respect. Even today, I have great respect to my teachers as I respect my parents. Because of teachers I have achieved many things in my life. Teaching is a blessed profession and students should not make a big issue of irritating statements by teachers. After all they too are humans and have drawbacks. Anyhow, dear students, please close the chapter and give due respect to teacher and move forward. God bless teacher.

The students should have discretely brought the matter to the notice of higher ups. Making her publicly apolagise is humiliation. A humiliated lecturer cannot teach and inspire the students. The students will not gain by confrontation. The issue should have been settled amicably without pricking any body's pride.

It was unfortunate that the teacher had the habit of abusing the students. However, now that she has issued a public apology, the students should forget the past and allow her to continue to teach. They should not harass or taunt her because they made her to apologise. After all she is human. A teacher apologising to the students needs great moral courage. Dear students, appreciate that fact and move on.
