Mangalore: Honest auto driver restores Jacintha's gold bracelet

Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore, Jan 21 : Quite often auto drivers of Mangalore have been in the news for wrong reasons, but at the same time, there are quite a few in the city who have earned wide appreciation for themselves and for their fellow auto drivers by exhibiting exemplary honesty.

The recent incident concerns 44-year-old auto driver Basavaraj, who hails from Badami and has been working as an auto driver in Mangalore for the past 25 years.

Basavaraj has shown great honesty by returning a gold bracelet worth Rs 50,000 belonging to Jacintha D'Silva, a resident of Pinto Lane.

Jacintha had hired an auto from Pinto Lane to Kadri, but while commuting she lost her gold bracelet in the auto. Later another passenger who noticed the bracelet brought the matter to the attention of Basavaraj.

Basavaraj came back to Pinto Lane and waited for long to meet Jacintha to return from Kadri. When she arrived, Basavaraj asked her a couple of questions on whether she had lost any bracelet. A surprised as well as relieved Jacintha gave him the required information, after which Basavaraj handed over the bracelet to her.

When we hear of thefts and robberies for gold happening every other day, gestures like Basavaraj's indeed come as fresh breath of air, and reaffirm one's faith in humanity. May his tribe increase.

I would start by saying Kudos to Basavraj. At a time when there are complaints pouring against auto drivers for charging excess fares - here is a case of a very honest auto driver. Indeed Jacintha would certainly present him with a suitable award, this matter must be reported to The R.T.O. and the department of law and order and they too in turn should give Basavraj a suitable present and make him an example to the other auto drivers.

May the breed like Basavraj increase.

The auto driver should be taken to police or any MLA office and should be given a honesty prize. We must promote such acts by giving some prizes. He deserves at least Rs.5,000/- gift from govt. Jai Manglore, Jai Hind !

Kudos to Basavraj and the passenger who handed over the bracelet to Basavraj. This kind of news gives the glimpse of hope in the middle of all sorts of bad news from our home district. Thanks Daiji team for publishing this news, I think there was no police case hence we will not read this elsewhere.

A big salute to Mr. Basavaraj for showing rare honesty. He is a really a rare species among stubborn Mangalore auto drivers. Let his act be a role model for other drivers, who are just trying to loot fellow passengers. Many times you will get the answer- " I cannot come " or " No meter charge"!!Hope Basavaraj's act will be an eye opener for our fellow Mangaloreans, who think we are very intelligent and those from Bijapur/ badami are 'bakhra's or illiterate gowdas!!

This is the quality of of soil of Mangalore. Many outsiders who came to Mangalore and settled hear embraced mangalore with open arms.Inspite of all bad news we read in the press about Mangalore I am of the opinion that Kudla is the best in the world. There are many Basavaraj in Mangalore even today.Incidentally in Mangalore sincerity could be found in abundance in auto drivers, bus conductors, teachers, ban people, hamalis, common shop vendors etc., to name a few but not above mentioned ranks!
    Jai ho Basavarajare.....

Good, it should work as inspiration to others. few months back, my mother lost her mobile phone, while she went to visit a doctor. the auto driver knows my mother, who is 83 years old. instead of giving back the mobile, he sold to somebody including the sim. look what a contrast is.
