M'lore: Cong candidate allowed to contest after payment of dues

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (VM)

Mangalore, Feb 26: After a meeting with the election officer about the BJP leaders' objection to Congress nominee Ganesh, contestant for ward 29 (Kambla); KPCC secretary Ivan D’Souza on Tuesday February 26 said that the objection had been dismissed by the election officer and permission granted to contest.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Ivan said that BJP did not produce any documents while objecting to Ganesh's nomination. The amount due by Ganesh to MCC was also cleared today, after which he was allowed to contest, he said.

When Daijiworld asked Ganesh about the matter, he claimed that he did not receive prior notice about the rent dues and declined from commenting further.

Sudhakar Joshi, K S Sharma and Ramakrishna Rai were the advocates who fought in favor of BJP.

K S Sharma speaking to Daijiworld alleged that Ganesh had a shop in an MCC-owned commercial complex and he had failed to pay the rent from many months, which is around Rs 25,000, and in spite of that he had submitted nomination for the election in violation of law.

"Ganesh is not a suitable candidate for the post. As per the Karnataka Municipalities Act, any person who is a beneficiary of MCC cannot contest for the election".

"The election officer did not give us the opportunity to explain", he added.

It may be recalled that BJP on Monday February 25 had taken exception to Ganesh's candidature alleging that he had outstanding dues to MCC. After much debate, the election officer had postponed the decision on his nomination to February 26.
