37 tourists killed in Maharashtra accident

Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Mar 19 (IANS): At least 37 people were killed and another 15 injured, including five foreign nationals, when a bus plunged into a river in Khed area Tuesday on the Mumbai-Goa highway near here, officials said.

Among the victims are at least five foreign nationals but authorities could not confirm whether they were killed or injured in the accident.

The accident took place around 3.50 a.m. when the Goa-Mumbai bus belonging to Mahakali Travels suddenly lost control on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river and crashed into the river, 190 km from Maharashtra capital Mumbai, said B.L. Shinde, an official from the highway department.

"So far, 37 bodies have been removed from the site and there are some more injured passengers, including five whose condition is serious," Shinde told IANS.

The injured, among them the bus driver have been taken to hospitals in Khed and Chiplun and some of the critical victims have been taken to Mumbai.

According to preliminary and eye-witness reports, the accident occurred when the ill-fated bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle, though the exact cause has yet to be determined.

This is considered among the worst accidents on the treacherous Mumbai-Goa highway. Traffic movement has been completely stalled on the highway after the accident.

Home Minister R.R. Patil Monday informed the Maharashtra assembly that 828 people have been killed and 2,411 seriously injured in road accidents on the Mumbai-Goa highway in the past three years.

Presently, seven highway police help centres are responsible for manning traffic on this highway and the requirements of increasing the number of such centres would be examined, Patil had said.

Following persistent demands by locals and tourists alike, the work on the four-laning of the highway is currently underway.

Most of the restaurants these private busses halt at for dinner serve free chicken meal and free
alcohol for these bus staff. Most of these accidents take place during night driving. I feel drunk driving is the reason for these accidents.

This is very sad news. There are hundreds of buses plying between Mangalore to Mumbai everyday, I have seen many times during the lunch/dinner, the drivers are entertained by the hotels for bringing the customers in by giving them free drinks which is really need to be looked into, as these types of accidents are going to happen and the drivers are putting in danger the lives of 30 passengers who are trusting on them.

Increased Vehicular traffic and narrow roads are one of the reason for highest number of accidents in this route.
    Mumbai Pune highway is widened
    Mumbai Nasik highway is widened
    Mumbai Surat highway is widened
But MUMBAI GOA highway is not widened.

There is absolutely no System in India where Drivers must undergo Strict Defensive Driving. Once they get a driving licence, there is no stopping them on reckless driving or dangerous driving. Motor Vehicle Dept don't even know what is Defensive Driving ?? It is time someone needs to step in and teach RTO. They better change or get out of their chair.

Mumbai-Goa highway is one of the oldest and nowadays a busiest highway in the country. That is why so many accidents happened and so many precious lives have been lost. Government should have widened this highway long time back. It is one thing to blame on erratic driving. But if Govt. doesn't give enough space for driving safely then accidents keep happening and lives will be lost daily. It is lack of commitment from elected leaders to improve roads.

what i believe is, some drivers dont get enough sleep, If one has to drive in the night shift he must sleep during day time atleast for 7 hours. So that he will be awake during day time, These Selfish bus owners show greed to drivers and make them to work 24 hours. because of this accidents happen. Whom to blame. and I travelled many times from mangalore to bangalore and mangalore to mumbai. during lunch break bus stops for lunch or dinner in front of restaurents. The price of a meal in restaurents is double the normal price. I asked one of my friend y this difference.? same meal v can get anywhere in india cheaper than this. My friend replied, for bus crew lunch or dinner is free with liquor. that money they cut from passengers bill. o my god. I saw drivers r driving the bus under the influence of alcohol.

Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.May their soul rest in peace. The cause of the accident is due to driver's fault. The drivers need to have cerification to drive these high- tech buses. New drivers will puzzle while negotiating deep curves. RTO must come hard on these heavy bus drivers.

Indian Govt. should come up with a law of "Defensive Driving" training for all public transport vehicle drivers. This is the only solution to prevent such kind of horrofic incidents. It works in rest of the world. Why not in India???

So many precious lives are lost in accidents.
Travelers entrust their lives in Drivers hands.
Some times, these poor drivers are
    tired lot.
Many do not get training in health and safety.
Strangely their working hours, pay and health issues are also not regulated by any authority.
