Update: 8.25 pm

Bantwal, Apr 9: The death toll in the tragic gas tanker accident at Perne near Uppinangady on Tuesday April 9 has climbed to eight, after two injured persons passed away in hospitals later in the evening.

The deceased are Khateejamma (40), who was admitted to Father Muller hospital, and Vasanth (35) from Bantwal, who was in AJ hospital. Vasanth was driving the Omni that was charred in the incident.

The other persons who died in the tragedy are Shobha Rai (45), Vanita (38) and her son Shitesh, Guruvappa (30), Sunil and driver of the tanker Cheluvarasan (32).

Contrary to initial reports, it is now learnt that there was no cleaner and the driver was alone in the tanker when the accident occured.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Harsh Gupta announced a compensation of Rs 1 lac each for the kin of the dead as well as for those who had sustained more than 50 percent of burn injuries. Those with lesser degree of injury will be getting Rs 50,000 each.

He also said that steps will be taken to ensure that the company concerned too pays compensation to the victims.

Update: 7 pm

The rescue operations near Uppinangady where a gas tanker overturned and caught fire, resulting in the death of six persons, have been completed.

Speaking to daijiworld, district chief fire officer Varadraj said that the operation came to an end at 4 pm and the traffic on the highway has been restored.

"Altogether, 13 fire tenders with 65 personnel were employed for the task. We received a call at 10 am about the accident, and fire tenders from Puttur and Bantwal rushed to the spot. Later, fire engines were called from other places like Mangalore and Beltangady also," he said.

"Six persons have been killed and three are seriously injured. A garage, a tailoring shop and eight houses were burnt down in the tragedy," he said, adding that the fire spread within a radius of 300 metres.

He also added that the operation went on well without any glitches and there was sufficient water during the entire process.

Update: 1.15 pm

As per the latest reports from the gas tanker accident spot, six bodies including those of children have been recovered.

The names of the deceased are yet to be ascertained. However, TV reports claimed two of the victims as Shobha and her child.

The total number of injured persons is yet to be known, however, it is said that five persons have been shifted to various hospitals. Three of them were taken to Father Muller Hospital in a critical condition. They are Vimala, Indira and Khateejamma.

Four houses, two shops, a garage, an Omni and a tempo have been charred. The driver of the tempo escaped unhurt.

The number of deaths is likely to increase as rescue operations are still under progress and the fire fighters are trying to enter the houses that caught the flames. The driver and the cleaner of the tanker, who are reportedly among the dead, are still stuck inside, it is said.

The fumes have been brought under control.

Traffic from both sides of the highway has completely stopped. Sources said that it may take another two or three hours to bring the situation to normal.

"Even as fire and emergency health services rushed to the spot, the officials of HPCL to which the tanker belonged, came to the spot only around 1415 hours while the incident occurred at 10 am," said the police.

Second Update

One person has reportedly died along with her child in the gas tanker fire that occured on the highway here on Tuesday April 9.

TV reports claimed that Shobha and her child were burnt to death.

Also, three persons, Indira (40), Vimala (38), an anganwadi teacher by profession, and Khateejamma (37), who reside by the side of the accident spot, suffered critical injuries. They were rushed to Puttur hospital from where they were taken to Mangalore and admitted into Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

Three lorries, a car and a bike have been reportedly charred in the incident.

First Update

A tanker that was carrying 16,000 litres of LPG from HPCL to Bangalore from the city overturned at Perne on national highway 75 near Uppinangady in the taluk while negotiating a bend there, and caught fire instantly. The LPG spread immediately around the vehicle, carrying the flames with it. The incident occurred on Tuesday April 9 morning.

The entire area around the ill-fated tanker has been burning, and huge flames coupled with unbearable heat could be experienced from a distance.

The police rushed to the spot, and arranged for the evacuation of buildings and houses located within a radius of one km. Still, there is a risk of buildings, trees etc catching fire, as the flames are uncontrollable as of now. There are reports that three houses located by the roadside have caught fire.

Fire tenders are being rushed to the spot. A couple of fire brigade vehicles have reached the spot now, and trying to extinguish the flames.

Traffic has been stopped on the national highway on both sides at a safe distance. Long queues of vehicles were seen on both the sides, but it will be several hours before the flames can be controlled and traffic is allowed to move.

Further details are awaited.

A similar tragedy involving oil tanker had occurred a few years back in Maharashtra. Still precautions are not being taken and no guidelines were issued by the authorities. Drivers are always in a hurry to reach their destinations and no speed limits are followed finally resulting in horrible tragedies. Transport owners must realize that drivers too are human beings and not machines. The get tired by driving for long hours. It must be made compulsory for transport owners to employ two drivers for vehicles plying long distances so that they can take some relief after driving continuously for a few hours. Otherwise there will be greater risks of similar tragedies happening in future.

Compensation of just 1 Lakh for the victims? Is this the value of human life in my Great Country? The district administration should at least give 10 Lakhs per person to the dead and ensure that entire medical bills are taken care.

    Hi,
Sad news it is. RIP those have lost their lives. Mangalore-Bangalore road have to be upgraded to 4 lane. I am not sure what happened but these trucks should be allowed to go only at night or some kind restrictions have to be put in place for these trucks.
There are many tight corners in this stretch.I think if we widen these roads like Mumbai-Pune expressway many such incidents can be kept to minimal.
Our prayers are with the families of all those who lost lives.

Government should stop distributing peanuts to victims , one lac is too less looking at gravience. They need better compensation , Ofcourse one cannot make out for lives lost , but it can help their family. .....//...... @ some comments , Transportation only by railway track is highly impossible , as there is considerable distance betwean stations and supply \ distribution centers. The shell thickness and safety of tankers is crucial , and it should safe against any sudden impact or fire accidents. ....@ Joe , Mangalore. File a simple RTI application and also petition by taking signatories of all residents in your area. This can help , but be carefull whistleblowers are often mistreated becoz of MAFIA involved.

Very sad incident indeed. But i am also saddened when i heard the compensation thats is announced to the victims. rs 1 lakh is very meagre wen we look at the damage that is done to the houses and the loss of lives. When aircrash happened there was reasonable compensation so in this case also the innocent victims also should be given better compensation. We need to become more emphathetic with these people than mere symphathetic.

Announce 1 lakh for the dead and 50K for the injured. Give a mourning statement and promise something that you will never do. That is it!!! Few days later everyone will forget the incident. Only people who suffer are family and friends of the victims who lost lives. For media it is yet another coverage. For police, it is yet another case. For DC its just another tragedy.

What measures do you intend to take for the safety of commuters. There should be a time restriction for the movement of these threat to life vehicles. All the roads shall be with dividers and also barricades on either side. Speed limit and no overtaking zones should be strictly monitored. Hefty penalty should be imposed on the violators(But we have a cellphone and that takes care of everything with one call. Thanks to the latest, fastest and easiest means of communication).
How can we bring all this into effect???? Good question. All the organizations such as BD, VHP, PFI, KFD etc etc etc... Please stop the religious war and moral policing and if possible come up with innovative ideas for safety measures rather than going behind cattle or boys and girls.
Politicians have no fear of anything. They always travel with convoy and all the traffic movement is brought to a standstill when they pass by. They never get to know the grievances of a commoner.
Hope everyone will wake up someday and promise to do something really meaningful and good to the society.

Pity such people working with no proper food, sanitation or even sleep away from family for whom they work. Roads are not scientifically planned, built or maintained. Trucks of this size are difficult to control while liquid inside pushes the vehicle by itself with a force which (sometimes) driver finds difficult to manage. WHY DO YOU KILL THE ALREADY DEAD POOR SOUL? The speed-breakers, if they are laid, are so bad that vehicles (of this size) can break down cars can topple. TAKE CARE MY FRIENDS LIFE IS PRECIOUS. We shall work to build a better place for all generations to come and avoid such accidents. Let us try and help as far as possible. RIP all who went ahead of us.

Is our respective traffic dept aware, what kind of precautions and rules comply for such specialized vehicle. Two drivers are compulsory for long distance transportation, speed limit, restriction during rush hours, there are so many compulsory rules are there to follow for transporting such high inflammable liquids.Believe our traffic dept not aware of these.

    Dear Sir,
You can not drive tankers like Nano cars they are too different. You have break horse power which is of no use and hence, apart from visibility and maneuverability constraints of these vehicles the speeding is difficult. Consider the slopes, bends and hills, any amount of your control is sometimes not sufficient. That's why you have separate lanes and roads/timings for heavy vehicles in most developed parts of the world. BE OF GOOD CHEER!! I and You are still alive not stuck in places like Perne/Bantwal.

Huge amount of Bulk-LPG should transported by GOODS-TRAIN tankers or by Sea wherever its possible but not by ROAD.

    HOW DID THE DRIVER SURVIVE?
THAT MEANS THERE WAS ENOUGH TIME FOR ALERTING PEOPLE IF THE TANKER WAS FITTED WITH A LOUD SPEAKER DEVICE WITH INDEPENDENT POWER PACK.
SOMETHING THAT AUTHORITIES AND CIVIL DEFENCE MUST MAKE MANDATORY IN SUCH VEHICLES.

@ Leslie Fernandes read the news correctly .it is clearly mentioned that the driver and the cleaner of the tanker have died and their dead bodies are still struck inside.

The drivers are specially trained every year & their licence to carry hazardous materials. But it is only because they are careless sometimes these accidents occur. I wonder whether the fire dept is equipped with dry chemical powder fighting equipment which only can contain this kind of fire. Water cannot contain the fire but only can disperse the gas ^ keep the tank cool to prevent exploding.

These LPG tankers are all moving bombs. The illiterate drivers/ cleaners do not know the seriousness/ responsibility of their job.
There was a similar incident at kannur but no concrete steps were taken to avoid these type of accidents.

We hope to have a LPG pipeline in place from MRPL battery limits to Bangalore LPG bottling station along the existing pipeline corridor. This can avert such accidents in future if proper piping class is ed.

Road Transporting LPG to Bangalore!, 16,000 L.! Morning rush hour! Overturned while negotiating at a road bend!!! Very careless behaviour of careless people. May be the most illeterate in the country would have handled it cautiously and organized it in careful manner because he was aware he is ignorant.

A tragedy indeed, these LPG tankers have to be opt for special security measures of Air-tight tankers or any other measures, in the safety of lives of other ongoing passengers and Vehicles...............
