Telugu actress Anjali disappears, exploitation alleged

Hyderabad, Apr 10 (DHNS): Budding south Indian actor Anjali, who had earlier complained that she faced threat to her life from her stepmother, disappeared under mysterious circumstances in the city on Tuesday.

Her brother Ravi Shankar filed a complaint at the Jubilee Hills police station stating that Anjali had disappeared from a hotel and remained incommunicado as her cell phone was switched off.

Shot to fame by her vivacious acting in films such as Journey and Sitamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, the actor seemed to be having a difficult personal life.

She complained that her stepmother, Bharati Devi, and Tamil director Kalanjiyam were using her as an ATM machine, leading a lavish life from her earnings. She recently shifted to Hyderabad in a move to safeguard her life from the duo. She alleged that her stepmother and director Kalanjiyam would be responsible for any harm to her.

Meanwhile, speaking to a Telugu news channel from Chennai, Bharati Devi said Anjali did not listen to their advice to pursue her studies as she had no interest in education.

She stated that the actor was drawing about Rs 10 lakh for her roles in Tamil films. After having received Rs 20 lakh for Sitamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, her remunerations remained largely in that range.

Bharati denied allegations that she exploited Anjali, saying that her stepdaughter was close to her before moving to Hyderabad.

Kalanjiyam, meanwhile, lodged a complaint with the Chennai police commissioner on Tuesday against Anjali. He accused the actor of defaming him. The director also told the media that she had given call-sheet until May 26 and must act in his film until it is complete.

Shoots of films involving Anjali were suspended. She is currently acting in Kalanjiyam’s “Oor Sutri Puranam,” for which she had already shot for a few days.

The actor is also starring in two Telugu films, “Balupu” and an untitled film opposite Venkatesh (“Bol Bachchan” remake).
