Kundapur: Students debarred from crucial exam for not wearing uniform

Kundapur, Apr 19: In an incident which exemplifies the inhuman behavior of the concerned, three final year degree students of Shankarnarayana government first grade college in the taluk were denied entry into the examination hall on Wednesday April 17 by the principal. In justification of its dastardly action, the college management cited that the students had breached the college rules by not wearing the uniforms. This, in spite of the fact that it was their final examination, which has the potential to make or mar their future.

Principal

Examinations for BBM degree students of the college, which falls under Mangalore University, began on April 8. The students had appeared for their examinations held on April 8, 10, and 15. On April 17, students named Mahesh, Santosh Kumar, and Sushant, who were to appear for their fourth examination in the subject of auditing were sent away from the examination hall, without permitting them to appear for the examination. These students, who were deprived of the opportunity on flimsy grounds, and who perhaps will lose a year as a result, have complained that the college management gave the reason of not wearing uniforms, as an excuse for this action.

The college has only three permanent lecturers, whereas the number of guest lecturers is 26. When enquired, some guest lecturers revealed that factionalism has been rampant in the college and even the guest lecturers are facing atrocities.

It is learnt that the university has not imposed any restrictions on wearing of uniforms in the colleges functioning under it. The rule regarding wearing of uniforms was brought into force because of the interest taken by the in-charge principal of the said college, Nagaraja Vaidya, it is learnt. As per the instructions of the principal, a sum of Rs 640 was collected from every student with the promise of providing two sets of uniforms to them. But the students later received only shirts but not the trousers. Even after the students approached the principal several times, there was no further progress in the matter.

It is said that the three students had worn the shirts provided by the college, but the college management found that they were not wearing trousers conforming to the colour code prescribed by the college. This sudden action baffled the students, who were helpless as the examination time had already passed and they had no time to change their dresses. Because of the unilateral and unjust action of the principal, these students have lagged behind by a year as compared to their classmates, and the course of their life may undergo irreparable diversion, other students complained.

Mamata R Shetty, Udupi zilla panchayat vice president, said that she is aware about the problems being faced by the students and guest lecturers of the college, and that she will urge the concerned to take stern action. “The future of the students has become bleak because of this unjust action. I condemn this step,” she added. Former MLA from Byndoor, K Lakshminarayana, said that he will pursue with the concerned for taking appropriate legal action against the principal, who is expected to guide the students towards a brighter future. He noted that the principal’s action in not permitting the students to write the examination is an unpardonable crime.

Former MLA from Byndoor, K Gopal Poojary, also felt that the principal of the college had erred in meddling with the future of the students just because they were not wearing the uniforms. He promised to bring the injustice to the attention of the department of collegiate education.

In-charge principal of the said college, Nagaraja Vaidya, clarified that wearing of uniforms is mandatory as per the college rules, and that the students were informed about this in advance. While agreeing that trousers, which form part of the uniforms, were not supplied to the students as promised, he said the students were sent out because of violation of rules. “The students were asked to go home and appear for the examination duly wearing their uniforms. They were also told that they would be permitted to write the examination even if they are late,” he stressed.

Mahesh, whose future has now become uncertain because of this action of the principal, said that his family is very poor, and that he works at a petrol bunk at night to pool resources for his education. “The principal collected money for the uniforms, but failed to supply them. Still, he wants us to wear the uniforms. Sending us away from the examination hall was a punishment for a mistake we never committed. He has played with our future, and we have lost a year in the process,” he rued.

Before blaming anybody let us examine a few things. A college prescribes uniform. Nobody objects at that time. Obviously it was introduced at the start of the course not just before the exam. All students but three wear them to the exam. Only three do not have them. If the principal says trousers were not given then how other students managed them. I am sure there is something more than what is told here. in my opinion uniform is necessary for students. many companies have their uniform. it is serving for the identity. There are colleges where several degree sections are there, to separate BBM from BSC different sections have different colour uniform. Public interference will make the matter worse. let the college management and parents try to sort out the issue before politicians involve.

This is another example of arrogant behaviour by the self styled autocrat principal. I wonder where are ABVP boys ? They collect the chanda but no where near ! This Principal should be taken up for enquiry after immediate suspension. Unless these behaviours are tackled immediately it will be worse.

This principal is nonsense. He should have atleast allowed them to write the exam with a warning. When writing exam uniform is not importent but the students knowledge is importent. look at him and the shirt he is wearing.

Most of the principals and teachers abuse their power. I have observed during my own college life. Teachers generally come from a very studious background. Teachers coming from villages are even more rigid. Only few are good and normal most have some or other kind of mental problem. There should not be uniform for college students. Even if there was there should have been leniency being their final exams. Common sense should have prevailed than let the students lose one year. Now the same students will seek revenge in some form with the principal.

The rules are made to follow. This is the discretion of the management to overlook or not when the students break the rule. This case, since the students are writting final year degree examination, the principal would have little liberal to the students at default alloowing the students to write the examination and then take proper action for breaking the rule. But this is my only personal suggestion and the final authority is the Principal.Thanq.

I salute the principal. We want such people in our political parties. Next time the person will give reason on the border that I don’t have riffle , I forgot to bring so Military has send him back to his house. Rule is rule. Uniform requirement might have informed to the student well in advance. If they don’t have uniform they would have taken permission from the management. This is one type of agitation…

Lets us keep aside all other factors which is discussed like who introduced the rule, only trousers not provided. All those were routine for the college as well as students. All of sudden coming with out uniform and expecting you are allowed to write the campus not exam hall, it's not acceptable. How can the year followed rules can be ignored even if it's a exam day ? If you allow these 4, tomorrow some more will come with out Uniform. So, there is something fishy behind this. Investigators just look for the reason which prompted them to come with out Uniform , even there was a threat of management would stop them from writing the exams. You dared to do it and you have to pay for it. This is the only way to bring descipline in students to change all the civic issues we are discussing now a days. Don't get in to un nexcessary issues like how many guest lectures , who has to impose rules and all. It's followed for years and nobody should break it. If at all you want to bring a change, follow the procedure and get your request addressed. Not that one fine day you feel to bring a change. If you dare to do that , you need to face the consequences.

Yes u r 100% correct. Mr. Bandarker. Mr. Vincent by reading the student’s fate one can understand the principal. No need to open the book to judge as u said. Cover page itself is enough. Who and how the poor student’s loss recovered? The educational authority shall investigate the episode and shall book the errant principal. Rules and regulation shall be there but not costing the student's future.

Introducing uniforms in any institutions have an hidden agenda. There has been large literature available on this. It curbs diversity. It is a conspiracy to eliminate diversity from this world and build 'unity' to dominate you. Who does it? The capitalist world does not want diversity. They want their profit and then power. The principal, I feel, really represents these elements. See, one who has not worn uniform is a 'rebel'for him. Because he wants all the students look alike. probably like the 'broiler chicken', all white all same, only its flesh is important! Strange is it not?

If the principal has agreed that the trousers that form part of the uniforms haven't been provided , then there is no case from the college /principals side to send the students home .. it is acknowledgement in dereliction of duty .. Case closed , no arguments and counter arguments are of any effect. Compensate the students , arrange for a fresh paper to be reset and penalize/ punish the principal.

Could the students please tell what prompted them not wear the prescribed trousers. As far as degree exams are concerned, there will be a gap of several days between any two exams. So, even if the students were so poor that they could not afford more than one pair of trousers, the possibility of not being able to wash the trousers does not arise. There seems to be something crooked and fishy going on behind the scenes to settle scores.

It is a Government College, and individual Principal of the Govt colleges have no authority to impose their own Rules different from the rules set by University or the Education dept. So, this Principal should be subjected to departmental inquiry as regards collecting money for two sets of Uniform and not supplying even full one set. Misappropriation of either college funds or money collected from Students' attract strict disciplinary action from University or Education dept.
It is Election time, and we should know whether this Principal is personally affiliated to any Political Party or any semi-political- Religious group ?
