Bangalore: Flying stone shrapnel from BBMP site claims girl’s life

Bangalore, Apr 18 (DHNS):
A five-year-old girl was killed on Thursday morning after being struck in the throat by a flying shrapnel from a BBMP work site next to her grandparents’ house at Indiranagar in Basaveshwarnagar police limits.

According to police, Akshitha, a native of Shravanabelagola in Hassan district, had come to stay with her grandparents during summer vacation. The accident occurred when she was sitting on the steps outside the house, close to where BBMP employees were chiselling a large block of stone to cover a drain.

Akshitha’s aunt, Nagaratna, told Deccan Herald that her niece had been eating chips when she suddenly heard a cry. “I rushed outside and was horrified to see her lying on the ground. Her throat was cut and blood was gushing out. She touched her throat and said, ‘Aunty, aunty’, and then her voice stopped,” Nagaratna said.

Neighbours rushed the girl to Chord Hospital where she was declared dead. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for an autopsy before being handed over to the grieving family. Akshitha’s grandparents, Thimme Gowda and Yashodamma, were heartbroken.

Flash protest

The incident triggered a flash protest by hundreds of local residents who raised slogans against the BBMP for failing to follow safety measures. They also gathered in front of the hospital and demanded stern action against the contractor implementing the project.

Akshitha’s father, Anand, a farmer in Shravanabelagola, did not know of his daughter’s death until arriving in Bangalore. Thimme Gowda told Deccan Herald that he had been unable to tell Anand the truth and had called him to Bangalore by claiming that Akshitha was ill. “I could barely imagine what was in store for me before I left for Bangalore,” Anand said. “I don’t know whom to blame. She was such a wonderful daughter.”

Inquiry

Law Minister Suresh Kumar has sought a suitable inquiry into Akshitha’s death. Kumar, who is seeking re-election from Rajajinagar Assembly constituency, termed it unfortunate that his detractors were using the tragic incident to cast aspersions on him.

Kumar, in a statement released to the press, stated that there was no truth in the allegations that the repair work was an “election gimmick” and had been taken up after the election calendar of events was announced. He said the work had commenced on February 16. The minister also said he had visited the hospital where Akshitha had been taken, immediately after getting to know about the incident.

How can you tell 'its not at all mistake of BBMP people'? If any of the workers/contractors read this type of comment they will be more negligent in their works. Whenever we are doing something we should see and take care that nearby property/people/animals are not harmed. We just cannot leave it to destiny of a victim and excuse the real negligent people. They should be punished for their negligence. Punishment for one negligence will make other workers/contractors to take necessary steps to avoid such incident.

Its unforunate and unlucky girl. But BBMP should have taken adequate precauitions when such dangerous activities are done. Hefty penalty should be levied ion the contractor. Suitable compensation is must.

Its unfortunate & very sad to read such news. Why the area of work is not covered when people are moving or living in the close vicinity. In India we never ever bother about safety or risk or safety precaution Looks big word but simple the supervisor / the contractor should use little common sense & use some safety precaution . There are so many accidents where children falling in to borewell & etc. In India digging on public road & doing dangerous work without proper barricade ( when flying object involved) is common ,when we are gong to STOP these kind of death caused by a human negligence ??

How unfortunate. Summer vacation turns tragic for this little angel. The grief of the parents would be unfathomable. When it comes to safety, the east and west are two extremes. In the east safety is so neglected that we keep loosing precious human lives. And when it comes to west there is so much law to uphold employee and public safety that many exploit the law to claim compensation from business owners for negligible incidents. However I would rather go with the latter, as atleast precious human lives are given the due care and protection.

Right time to screw the BBMP for their negligence. We always see that's happening openly. they don't care for safety, cleanliness, rules and regulations to follow. They feel and act as if they are permitted to do anything anywhere. So, sue them back so that it should be a lesson for the contracotrs for coming future. Of course we can not bring Akshitha back. But let this instance be an alarm for all of us to show enough is enough.

Such a tragedy should not befall anyone. Was pathetic to note that all political leaders had come and had uttered something or the other just to gain political mileage.
What wrong had the child done?

Why no mistake of the BBMP? Wasn't it their duty to follow safety measures or make prior announcements about the dangers of flying shrapnels? Even in stone quarries the workers inform the passersby before breaking granites using dynamite. An innocent child sacrificed her precious life merely due to negligence of BBMP.

Let not he people only blame the BBMP workers, but here, since we know how our government contract laborers work, we also on our part should take some measures in our security! The elders in the house should not have allowed the child to sit so near where work like this was happening! We cant expect BBMP to cordon the area every place they work, but we on our part also have to co-operate with them on this front!
