Mangalore: Gold hidden in aircraft - DRI busts major smuggling operation

Mangalore: 'Hide and seek' in aircraft - Accused smuggled in gold 30 times!

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Update: April 22

Mangalore, Apr 21: The accused who were caught smuggling gold by hiding it in international and domestic flights on Sunday April 21 revealed that they had used this method to smuggle in gold as many as 30 times.

The accused reportedly used different flights from the Gulf region, which arrive in Mangalore and other cities in the country and then take off to a destination within India. One of the accused would hide the gold under his seat in the aircraft after take-off from the Gulf, and on arrival here, his accomplice, posing as passenger in the same flight, would retrieve the gold during the journey to the domestic destination.

After earlier smuggling operations wherein gold was brought concealed in jars of oats and chocolates, this is seen as another innovative method used by smugglers.

Mangalore: Gold hidden in aircraft - DRI busts major smuggling operation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 21: The officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Sunday April 21 busted a major operation wherein international and domestic flights were being used to smuggle gold into the country. One passenger was arrested in Mangalore Airport and two others in Mumbai.

The arrested has been identified as Meethala Kallulla Parambath Nazar of Kozhikode, Kerala, who arrived by Jet Airways flight 9W 531 from Dubai to Mangalore on Sunday morning.

Based on credible information, the DRI officers intercepted Nazar when he arrived at the Airport, and on interrogation, it was revealed that he had concealed 5 gold biscuits (about 500 grams) under his seat in the aircraft. When the flight landed in Mumbai later, another passenger by name Paivalike Ahamed Ali of Kasargod, was to recover it from under the seat. As there is no customs in domestic terminal, the gold would thus go unnoticed.

As soon as Nazar revealed the information, Air Intelligence Unit in Mumbai was alerted. The officers intercepted the passenger Paivalike Ahamad Ali who had retrieved the gold on prior arrangement and the same was seized at Mumbai.

It was revealed by them that they have operated from different airports in India and Dubai. By detecting this novel modus operandi of concealment in the aircraft and transiting by domestic flight, the DRI has busted a clever modus operandi.

Three of the gang members were arrested at Mangalore and Mumbai.

The officers of DRI have registered a case. Further investigation is under progress. This is the first such case detected by DRI, Mangalore wherein the gold was concealed in the Aircraft.

Jet Airways flight 9W 531 never land at Mumbai to take along domestic passangers.

Not at all possible to share same flight at the same time domestic and NRI passengers.

If allowed and possible no need to hide inside or under the seat, they can exchange hand baggage inside flight itself.

I am frequent traveler from Dubai to Mangalore from last 20 years via Bombay or direct itself and not a single time I seen both domestic and NRI passengers mixed together. If at all we need to change the flight we have to finish our customs clearance in Bombay itself and then proceed to domestic airport as a domestic passenger. Here where is the chance to hide and seek?

Masha Allah What an idea sirji ? Even frauds have brilliant ways and means to continue their trade. This may be just the tip of iceberg. There must inumerable other ways by which illegal trade and commerce must be continuing. Unless Policies are changed and illegal ways and transactions made less profitable, they will continue.

Whatever the modus operandi, this is impossible when the passenger has to change the aircraft.

I read it as a half cooked story. Without the internal arrangement, it all sounds a fiction.

Hope you are not keen on giving it a try !!!

This is my perspective about how they must have been operating - first, the international passenger arrives in an airline that connects international as well as domestic airport. For example, Dubai-Mumbai-Bangalore or Dubai-Delhi-Chennai. The person coming from Dubai gets down at the international airport (lets say Mumbai) and then his accomplice boards the same flight to Bangalore. First person informs the second, the seat number under which the packet is hidden.

This has to be arranged for flights that are scheduled in close flying schedule so that same airplane continues to next destination. The airplane is not same many times. Domestic passengers are made to change the aircraft. I wonder what happens to the packet concealed in such instances ?

Impossible ! An international passenger is made to go through immigration counter and his baggage is screened for dutiable items. He can't walk free like domestic passengers do. His baggage has tag that shows from where he boarded the flight.

If you book online and early enough you can very easily get a desired seat across different sectors. And surely the contraband would not be left on the floor. It would be too easily noticed. This was probably hidden in some manner under the seat or under the seat cover. 5 gold biscuits of 100 gms each really do not take up too much space.

Two questions : After all passengers disembark, isn’t the aircraft ‘swept’properly?. Even with e-Check in facility, is it always possible to get the same seat for the two ‘criminal partners’in the same aircaft at different sectors without ‘co-operation ‘ from inside?
