Mangalore: Untouchability not handiwork of Brahmins - Pejawar Swamiji

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (DV/SP)

Mangalore, Apr 22: Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math insisted that Brahmins are not to be blamed for giving birth to the practice of untouchability. He said this theory has a basis.

Delivering the benedictory address at the ‘Brahmana Jagruti Sammelan’ held in the city on Sunday April 21, the Swamiji said that the practice of untouchability was in vogue even before Brahmins came into being as a separate section of Hindu society. He felt that the practice of untouchability is wrong.

“Talented Brahmin youth are facing injustice because of the reservation criteria. On the other hand, several people, who claim themselves to be part of the intelligentsia, point their accusing fingers at Brahmins for every wrong,” he rued. He advised the Brahmin community members to be prepared to bravely cross the sea of challenges through wholehearted efforts.

“Brahmins have come together not for harming anyone. Unity is a way to strengthen our exalted culture. This congregation should never be a forum just for the upliftment of Brahmins as a community. The responsibility of conserving the Hindu society is upon everyone of us. We are backed by the vision of human welfare,” he added.

The Swamiji also compared the belief systems like Dwaita, Adwaita, Vishishtadwaita, etc to the branches of the ancient tree known as ‘Sanatana Dharma’.

Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Swamiji of Hosanagar Ramachandrapur Math called upon different factions within the Brahmin community to unite under a single umbrella, to be able to achieve progress and to address the injustices they are facing. “Coming together does not harm anyone. That will prove to be a good move for the community as a whole,” he felt.  He said that unlike in the past, when people were protected by kings in case of injustices, the people need to own the responsibility of protecting their interests.

Sri Vidyaprasannateertha Swamiji of Subrajanya Math, Sri Vishwaprasannateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, Jitakamanandaji of Ramakrishna Math, Karnataka Bank managing director, P Jayaram Bhat, K N Vasudeva Adiga of Adigas Group of Hotels, veteran advocate, H Subrahmanya Jois, Dr H V Narasimhamurty, Vijayaraghava Padvatnayaka, M B Muliya, C S Rao, Dr Prabhakar Joshi, M B Purnik, and several others were present.

President of Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, welcomed. Journalist, Manohar Prasad, compered the programme. Madhuri Sriram proposed vote of thanks. Scholar, Bannanje Govindacharya, Bheemeshwar Joshi of Horanadu temple, as well as chairman and managing director of Indian Overseas Bank, M Narendra, were present.

Dr P Sadananda Mayya in his presidential address said present day Brahmins are in the field of business but they are not organized. "In the name of multi-cultural system Brahmins are losing thinking power, culture, systems and their practice. Earlier Brahmins lived in joint families but today they follow the nuclear family system. Brahmins have even changed their food patterns and are not systemized anymore. We should all work to protect our existence," he said.

Social customs evolved on their own. It is wrong to blame Brahmins or any community.

Inspite of some aberrations, we have a strong social system in which different sections of Hindus live peacefully.

But, what about foreign countries where large scale discrimination and atrocities have been committed against communities like jews and parsis.

Even scientists and rational thinkers have not been spared in foreign countries by the religious institutions there.

We highlight our small issues to the world, but ignore serious social discriminations world over.

To erase the blame of un- touchability, Brahmins may start social services of the kind STARTED BY MOTHER THERESA, who cleansed and served the sick, downtrodden and orphaned irrespective of cast and creed.
She did this to honour the will of God who commanded that whatever you do to the least my people, that you do unto me.

In offices utives sit seperately in functions and they have seperate Cantenes for food.

In politics, every party and politicians are calculating their fortunes based on caste system.

Brahmins never ask anyone to roll over their food. People are doing this as they are getting cured of their skin deceases.

Brahmins never practice untouchability in social life.

In fact it is the other castes who are still practicing untouchability.

Even the rich people in the so called lower caste do not mix with poor people of their own caste.

Even in foreign countries, there is social discrimination.

Social discrimination is social problem and it is wrong to point out fingers at the brahmins and ask them to rectify the same.

The God's creation is itself discriminatory as there are rich-poor, healthy-unhealthy, able bodied-handicapped etc. etc.

As far as spiritiual life is concerned, even an ordinary brahmin can not touch a temple priest, as he is doing temple services.

Even in yogic classes, the participants do not touch each other as every participant is surrounded by spiritual magentic field.

Even in this Kaliyuga, brahmins are practicing their customs with great difficulty and hence criminal ratio in brahmins is very low.

It is said that puja and other spiritual practices in a brahmin's house in a locality has good effect on the surrounding atmosphere and people live peacefully there.

In temples and religious functions it is the practice to feed the cows and brahmins first.

Due to all the above satvik practices, people lived peacefully in India.

Even in our childhood, we were not locking the doors of our houses in our village.

Now, in the name of reformation, we are ill treating cows and learned brahmins.

The results are there for every one to see.

We are seeing social unrest, rape, terrorism and other criminal activities everywhere.

In spite of discrimination and attacks from all sides, we brahmins are progressing.

Mr. Frank, Why on earth is MADE SNANA is still being practiced before the Brahmin priests ? Do the priests protest ? Its a big 'NO'.

Secondly, Is untouchability being practiced in the Udupi Mutt itself . Can an SC / St / OBC person sit and eat food together with the Brahmins ?

It is easy to preach but sadly, it is difficult to practice it.

Why blame brahmins always? Brahmins have made a lot of contribution to the Indian society by way of preaching protecting dharma, with good ideologies such as vedas, philosophies etc. Its the Brhamins leaders who first criticized untouchability in India. One must also note that while all humans are equal, every community, group of people have their own culture. The mangalore christians too are christians and christians elswhere too are christians but our culture varies from others. Dalits have their own culture and practices about which they should be proud of.

DEAR SWAMIJI, TO START WITH LET US REMOVE ALL CLASS SYSTEMS IN TEMPLES. LET HINDUS FROM ALL SOCIAL STATUS HAVE EQUAL STATUS IN ALL THE TEMPLES. LET EVERYONE HAVE SAME ACCESS TO ALL AND EVERY PART OF THE TEMPLE. LET THIS BE A GREAT BEGINNING. LET THE SO CALLED DALITS ALSO GET A CHANCE TO BE PUJARIS AND SWAMIJIS. JUST WORDS HAVE NO VALUE.

Dear respected Pejavarji,it is simple and easy to undo it.Just eradicate made snana which is meant for so called untouchables and at the same time explain and educate people that it is a blind ritual. With all due respect to all gods of that temple, this Made Snana issue really opened eyes of millions of people around the globe. The rolling over left over food of Brahmins is the clear example of the reverse statement you made here.

If untouchability if not the handi work of Brahmins, then why they have to practice it? Eliminate the discrimination at the Udupi Mutt dining halls first. No human being is superior than other.. we are all created equal.

Fifty percent of top level positions in public and private sectors are occupied by 5% Bhahmins. We will not support reservations once this ratio comes down to reasonable proportion.

Why only single out Brahmins. How many of us have not practiced the same. How many of us are ready to invite dalit’s into our homes and dine with them. We ourselves show them the last row. The one who has not sinned cast the first stone.

Yes! I agree to Lavin.. forget untouchability and eating nonveg... can we have intermarriage between castes without any difference. say a Muslim marrying a christian! a dalit marrying a Gowda girl..? a Brahmin marrying another caste? if that happens I will say BR Ambedkars dream will come true. Buddham Sharanam Gacchami!

I do not know who first introduced UNTOUCHABILITY and how many centuries ago. But certainly the Brahmin class of society encouraged and enjoyed it just to prove their superiority over this humble class of people ( SC / ST / OBC's etc ). That is also the reason why " MADE SNANA " was never banned centuries ago and it encouraged / continues even today.

Today's prajavani carries an article named "Exclusive layout for upper castes". In bangalore, Shankara Agrahara is being set-up as an exclusive community - no lower caste is allowed to buy a plot there.

So, if brahmins did not start, then who started it?

Anyways, the above article, clearly states that today's brahmins are wanting to practice it, ie untouchability

As a symbol that Brahmins have not created untouchability, let every brahmin publicly hug the untouchables in a ceremony and continue that habit for next 5 years...

Your Holiness, Vishweshathirtha Swamiji, kindly give us some evidence for your claim. Today everything is under the scanner. I basically study history and social sciences. Your claim without evidence will amount to a lie. All the historical evidence says that the Brahmanas( I do not blame Brahmins of today for that) only introduced caste system. If you have evidence otherwise it is worth studying. Kindly read works of Dr B R Ambedkar and his definition of a Brahmana.

    'Jagruti' means 'awareness' and it
does dawn all of a sudden. Not necessarily during a 'Sammelan'. It comes through going 'inward'and a journey filled with 'tests'..It happens in a 'click' but when it happens it stays. To be aware that such a 'state' exists at the outset
takes some doing. That's why meditation, prayers are called for.
Some 'get it' through literature, some through music and some through sayings. However one must go the 'journey alone'. It has to be a 'solo' performance. What can 'sammelanas' or 'religious meetings' do at the best when this is the case? They can't even provide a platform.....
