Air travel to get costlier: Now pay for preferred seats, check-in bags

Apr 29 (PTI): In a move that would raise the cost of air travel, the government on Monday said it has allowed airlines to charge passengers for preferred seats on a flight, check-in baggages and meals, among other things.

"Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh has decided to permit scheduled airlines to unbundle certain services and to charge fees for these services separately," an official release said.

The services for which the airlines would be free to charge passengers include preferential seating, meals, snacks, drinks (barring drinking water), check-in baggages, use of airline lounges, carriage of sports equipment and musical instruments and valuable baggages which have higher carrier liability.

The practice was launched in 2008 by some US carriers which were facing financial crunch. Their decision to charge for even the first checked baggage had then received flak from air travellers, but the practice still continues with the airlines generating revenue worth millions of dollars.

The release said the minister's decision was based on recommendations of an independent consultant, which said, "Unbundling of services ... has become a necessary aspect of exercising more control over operational costs and running a successful airline".

"The objective of the decision is to facilitate airlines to offer low base fare for price sensitive travellers, while at the same time offer choice to service seekers at a price," it said.

The decision would "allow the passengers to benefit from lower base fares and to customise the product to better suit their requirements and budget while allowing airlines to develop more sustainable operations in an environment of wafer-thin margins," the release said.

Here we go again! Raising prices for the avaiation industry is akin to fleecing hapless passengers yet again! The airlines companies would now rake in those extra bucks akin to Telecom companies fleecing their customers on Value Added Services...This happens only in India

We have no problem to pay extra fare to travel on Indian Carriers. But same time they have to provide better services too. Apart from increasing air fare, they have to concentrate on removing unproductive staff members too. When compare to any foreign carriers, Indian Carriers are having more number of employees per air craft which is not good sign for any corporate sectors too

It is a welcome move. The fare is going to be cheaper for those who do not need add-on facilities/services.

This is the concept of aviation industry in Europe and America. Unlike we Asians, their checked-in baggage is usually to the minimum that contains only their personal items.

This move is beneficial for those, who carry minimum weight in checked-in baggage (the kilo rate applied nominal if you add the intended weight while purchasing the ticket)and do not look for food, alcohol, and choice of seat.

We should salute UPA's continuous reform programs.

Whenever these so called smart consultants/Babus draft a policy they propose/adopt to U.S or EC. standards, but in terms of monthly wages,medical/health insurence, road n transport, water and electricity, security in general, education system, and so on.... to their own staff or for public/citizens in general its unique and rotten, and age old Indian sub standards adopted. We belive if we opt for U.S.standards for any new project, rest everything must follow as per their living standards.

For me this is acceptable as long as I prefer to travel light and cost is less. Generally people need everything which was available once upon a time during flight and pay less...!!!??

When it comes earning revenue it's 'copy, paste' from some US airline and when it's about service quality, we have our own unique standards.

With certain conditions this policy is good in domestic sectors. In international sector it will be a great disadvantage to the travellers. For example in the country where i reside, they charge for food. But airfare is low and at times much cheaper than a bus ticket. Atleast 23kg of luggage they should allow to carry free of cost. Then it is a good decision if the flight ticket too comes down.
