Kasargod: Rain wreaks havoc - One dead, several houses damaged

Kasargod, Apr 30: Heavy rain accompanied by thunder caused huge loss to life and property in the district on on Monday April 29.

As per the information obtained, one person died due to lightning and two others were injured. Several houses were also damaged.

A boat which left for fishing was struck by lightning killing fisherman Nalinakshi (42), and injuring Diwakar (34) and Rajan (45). It is said that the three went for fishing on a boat owned by Prabhakar from Kiyoor at around 5 am.

As soon as the boat reached a distance of about 1 nautical mile, Nalinakshi was hit by lightning. He was soon rushed to hospital but the doctors pronounced him brought dead. The body was taken to general hospital for post-mortem.

In Cheroor, the house belonging to M K Majid was badly damaged due to lighting and in the incident, his wife Ayesha was said to be injured. Majid and his children escaped unhurt. Lightning also struck the house belonging to Abbas at Cheroorugudde and several electronic equipment were damaged.

In Perla Sheni limits, as many as 12 houses are damaged, and four houses collapsed in Enmakaje. In Perla, houses belonging to Sumati, Jayanthi, Rukiya, Radha, Babu Achari, Alphonse D’Souza, Thomas D’Souza, Zainabi, Rama Nayak, Suhara, Krishna Nayak, Laxmi, Mahalinga Nayak were reportedly damaged.

St Lawrence Church in Maniyampare and Sri Sharadamba high school in Shen were also damaged.

In Maniyampare, vehicular movement was stopped as a huge tree was uprooted. Crops were destroyed due to rain in several places of the district.

Mangalore, Apr 30: The rain coupled with lightning and thunder which lashed parts of Karnataka and coast on Monday morning,  has left two persons injured, while three cows lost their lives, due to lightning.

The injured are Appi, wife of Babu from Guripalla in Kanyadi village, and Malati wife of Ningaiah from the same village. Both of them were shifted to a hospital where they are recovering. The wall of Appi’s house also developed cracks.

Three cows died in Malavantige village. A house in Nidgal in Kalmanja was damaged after lightning struck.  Hundreds of areca nut and coconut trees were razed to the ground by the strong wind that accompanied rain in Beltangady taluk. Power and telephone connections also got severed in several parts of the taluk.

A boat which had left Keeyur Kadappura coast in Kasargod district for fishing was hit by lightning, resulting in the death of a fisherman named Nalinaksha (42), a native of Kadappura. Diwakaran (34), and Rajan (45), who also happened to be in the boat then, survived with injuries. The injured were admitted into Kasargod general hospital.

The meteorological department has forecast rain and strong winds for two more days in coastal Karnataka and north Kerala districts. It has warned fishermen to exercise caution as winds with a velocity of 45 to 55 kms might blow during this period.
