Mangalore: DK has only 35 policemen per one lac people - lowest in state

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, May 13: It is strange but true. Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, which has witnessed various cases of communal unrest, illegal cattle trafficking, raids on certain places etc, apart from naxal activities, has the lowest per capita ratio of policemen in the state.

As against the accepted standard of 200 police personnel per lac of population, the district has only 35 personnel for every one lac population.

The above fact was given by the district superintendent (SP) of police, Abhishek Goyal.

Goyal pointed out that the district lacks in terms of number of policemen, and also number of police stations. He mentioned that Udupi, which has only three taluks, has 22 police stations, while DK district has only 13 stations.

“Out of 450 police posts sanctioned to the district, 50 posts have remained vacant since long. Proposals sent for increasing the number of police stations, and appointment of police personnel, have not yielded any positive results,” he explained.

The SP pointed out that the post of additional SP has remained unfilled since June 2012. Puttur sub-division, which was the only sub-division functioning in the district, was recently split into two, by creating an additional subdivision. Now, one of these sub-divisions supervises police stations in Puttur and Sullia taluks, while the other looks after Bantwal and Beltangady taluks. Deputy superintendents of police, Sadanand Varneker and H D Mendonca, are heading these sub-divisions, he informed.

He further explained that the proposals recommending setting up of a traffic police station at B C Road, and converting police outposts in Dharmasthala, Nelyady, and Farangipet, into full-fledged police stations, have not been considered favourably till now. The work on constructing a traffic police station building near the town station has begun, while building has been sanctioned for Sullia police station, where work is yet to start. The building sanctioned for Uppinangady could not be taken up for want of suitable site, as we have only ten cents land at Uppinangady as against the requirement of 15 cents, he added.

The SP said that recommendations have been made to post 20 additional policemen each to Beltangady and Venoor police stations, which have naxal-infested areas under their jurisdiction.

Goyal said that closed circuit television cameras have been fitted in all the checkposts in the district, apart from Venoor, Kadaba, Punjalakatte, and Beltangady police stations. He added that the governing councils of temples concerned in Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya have been requested to fit high capacity CCTV cameras.

I dont understand why people are blaming police. They have to bow down to politicians and everybody know from last 5 years we had partial, biased, double standard, unprofessional, uneducated politicians in our DK and state. Thats why DSP has raised this issue now so that current impartial govt can take appropriate measures.

The previous government did'nt require additional police force for South Kanara because the Khaki cops had outsourced their jobs to IMMORAL POLICE.

Either ways our police force is capable of only stopping and harassing cattle transporters and saluting their saffron clad bosses.

It was never required in DK before to have 200 police for 100000 people. Since BJP ruled Karnataka for five years and created so many goondas, even 400 police for 100000 may be less....!!!!???

By considering this factor, one police man for every 2857 people. Doesn't make any sense. Though, we people of DK managed peace and harmony to certain degree. That’s amazing. Hats off to all of us.

Since the police force was ineffective, BJP foresaw the need of a free moral policing system, which unfortunately has gone underground since the 8th of May. Jai hoooooooooooooo

The ratio does not matter, But there should be a will to carry out the duty. If the Police do their duty impartially the crime ratio will comedown drastically. As I suggested earlier if the Police resort to " SHOOT AT SIGHT " on the criminals / rioters found on the roads, the goondas will bow down and come to their senses. BUT the police has to use this power IMPARTIALLY. This has given results in the past.
Let us look at the head of AP Police who is controlling his dept defying the orders and wishes of the state ministers

What congress don this issue that can be disussed in next few months. But what the BJP did for 5 years on the police issue. The revenue has increased all of a sudden in the last ten years due to call centres and BPO's. Crores of money is collected on stamp duty property registration.

Now we know why the DK police has been ineffective in containing criminals. The DSP however, has not clearly mentioned since when this shortage has been prevalent. The erstwhile BJP government seems to have castrated the district police so that the saffron terror brigade would have a free hand in going its way.

This ratio (Police:Population) used to be covered by moral policing personnel in the past (BJP rule).

Hope things would improve for the days to come (Congress rule)

If religious fundamentalism, DISCARDED by other Countries,
    used here for political inventions,
if we elect law hijacking persons to rule over us, 3500/-policemen will also be insufficient!

At one side we have acute unemployment problem but another side our Government is not keen to fulfill the vacant posts. More than 25% personnel of Police Department go for Politicians duty. 5 to 10% Policemen are roaming in Bangalore or Delhi for better postmen. I think only God saves of our Coastal area since our region is paradise for almost all Gods of all faiths. Filling the vacant post also will solve the unemployment problem to certain extent rather than creating the new post every time
