Moodbidri: Officials visit Niddodi power plant site - locals resent

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, May 17: The villagers of surrounding areas gathered in large numbers and took to task officials of several departments, who had arrived at Kolattar in Niddodi village on Thursday May 16. The team of officials was here on a spot inspect and assessment to consider practicability of setting up thermal power plant at Niddodi.

The proposed thermal power plant will have thrice the capacity of the power plant set up by Udupi Power Corporation Ltd at Nandikoor, Udupi district. The project, which threatens to pollute the environment and make life for the villagers miserable, proposes to acquire vast expanse of agricultural fields here.

The team led by M S Puri, officer of Central Electrical Authority, comprised assistant commissioner, Sadashiva Prabhu, KPTCL chief engineer, Lakshman, Mescom executive engineer, Jagadish, KIADB land acquisition officer, Nagaraj, and some others. As soon as the people came to know that the officials were gathering details, they came on the spot, giving rise to tension. The people stopped the cars of the officials, placed stones across the road, and set up temporary blockade.

The officials tried to divert the ire of the villagers by claiming that they were in the village to measure the distance between the western ghats, railway line, and Mangalore port, and not to assess the desirability of the power plant. They said they could not keep the villagers informed in advance, as the village accountant was not in station. Puri said the team was here to inspect the agricultural lands and geographical features. He said the departments concerned will take the people into confidence before taking any decision.

Convener of Marubhoomi Horata Samiti, Kiran Manjanabail, said that it was wrong on the part of the officials to visit the village all of a sudden without prior intimation. Zilla panchayat member, Janardan Gowda, Kallamundkoor gram panchayat president, Joachim Correa, former president, Poovappa Gowda, and others were present. A petition was handed over to M S Puri, seeking to abandon the plan to set up power plant here.

MLA, Abhaychandra Jain, who came to know about the team’s visit, said that the plant was the brainchild of former state chief minister, Jagadish Shettar, who had given clearance for the same. He said he had conveyed his displeasure about the visit of the team without his knowledge to the district deputy commissioner, and asked him not to allow the team to proceed in the matter. He said he will not allow this plant to be set up in Niddodi.

Niddodi Thermal Power Plant will ruin our entire coastal region. Already we are in deep trouble with colossal adverse effects of UPCL project. Now, as per present CM , this another fatal blow is on the anvil for us. It is very clear that , all that what is left out green in our land will be destroyed and coming generations will be left with a ''Death Legacy''. It is a dire need now that we all shall protest against this Project.

Best Solution is make all the districts self sufficient in Producing their own requirement of electricity. Why the Raichur & Kudathini (Bellary) people should sacrifice for the people of other districts and spoil the environment of their own districts. Are they not human beings ?
Whoever is very sensitive about their environment let them remain in dark instead of depending of the Electricity produced at Raichur/Kudthini/Supa/ Jog Falls /Shivana samudra/KRS.
12,000 Hotels and 3,000 Chemical Industries Run by Mangaloreans in Mumbai are contributing a lot for increasing the Pollution in Mumbai. 50% of Small & Medium chemical Industries of Mumbai are owned by Mangaloreans. Why not ask all these Mumbai-Mangaloreans to close their Unit and settle in their Native place with clean environment ?

Jagadish Shetter who has cleared the project has been cleared by the people of the state.......
But I have strong doubt that this project will go into stream sooner or later come what may.The resentments of the locals/politicians will not have standing in the long run...after all the money power to stay as usual.Politicians, various association like "hasiru shawl parties" etc., will have bumper crop as their their "rotti jaari thuppakke bittu"........

we have to welcome new power plants. But before giving clearence to new plant, goverment has to clear the environmental issues of the existing plant. In india, industries hardly bother about environmental issues. we have seen this in BASF, MRPL, Udupi power plant. All these companies dumping pollution into sea and surrounding places instead of cleaning with use of scientific method.

Mr. Madhyastha .. I totally agree with you, Thermal Power plant adds more temperature to the atmosphere, forcing nearby people to leave their land, houses etc as it is happening in UPCL plant in udupi. IN udupi thermal plant, Water has been contaiminated, Forest is effected, Cattle died due to water contamination, People Left their houses permanently, Fields became unsuitable for cultivation etc.

What are the factors that threaten to pollute the environment ? Instead of protesting right and left against any new project in the name of environment, we should look for options. Otherwise we will not have 24 by 7 power for the next 200 years.

Coastal temperatures and humidity readings are on the rise for past few years. Man made activities driven by urge for so called material developments are spilling out side effects, which, we do not have any control over. Where are we going to reach in the name of development ? Where are we suppose to reach with fast growth ? Are we being dissolutioned by uncontrollable urge for capitalism ? We must draw a line at some stage though it is a delicate n fragile one.

Coastal region already has so many industrial hubs that contribute to environmental hazards which make our own life miserable to live. We have to accept this reality. Eco-friendly activities are fine, but definitely not eco-hazardous projects. Mega cities like Bangalore with huge population, put enormous pressure on rural, semi-developed places to meet city-demands like water, power, fuel, food, vegetation, meat, milk, infrastructure related materials (stone, gravel, sand, mining, ...) etc. All these activities wil have side effects and their on fallouts like effect on health, purity of water-air-soil, which will directly affect the local population and suffocate their living. Many people do not even aware of what is going on at a broader scale. Our policies n plans are really flawed. Gandhi once said- Nature has enough to offer for our needs, but not sufficient to fulfill our greed. Current drinking water crises, increase in heat content do have direct connection to our activities. Taking out resources like fule, coal etc from beneath earth and then puttin them out in atmosphere will only make situation worse. We are borrowing everything from our future generation, and making our next generation living more difficult. In name of luxury, people demand huge quantity of resources. We have forgotten to walk small distances, or climb even few floors using steps. Let us try to use resources judiciously, within our needs and stop wastage till a time a radical idea comes out. BE AWARE ALL THE TIME !!!

Let there be a secret Voting from the Villagers of Niddodi - whether they want this Power Plant or not.

I understand from my relatives in Niddodi and surrounding areas that more than 65% of the farmers are ready to give their land for this Power plant as they are not cultivating their land since last 20 years due to acute shortage of agriculture Labours, so this land has become useless for them and, at least now if the power plant comes they hope to get some price for the same.

    hi Mr ramakrishna.
Your commnets on Nidodi seems to be childish and does have any stuff. If villagers are not cultivating the agriculture land you recomend it to give it to industrilist. Look in HUngarcutta I too have 3 acre of ancistral land which was lying vacant for many yeras due to labour shortage. Since last three years I implemented scientific way of cultivation like, Sree besaya padhathi, Chappe padathi, mechanical ploughing, mecahnical planting of paddy seeds and maschine cutting. Last year I got profit of 20000 profit. This year I planed for organic agriculture system. I challenge I will get more than 50K profit in 3 acre. Sitting in concreate Jungle like Mangalore you are misleading the public. You know secrete ballot system on the issue like this are route cause for corruption. Viallagers get some pitty rupees and vote for the company.

@Ramkrishna, even if villagers accept the idea of having the plant there,
the whole district and state must look into the environment polluting factor, for which our coastal area has become so notorious already.

We have almost destroyed the ecological balance in the entire coastal belt due to urbanization and development etc.

Let the plant come up with a viable environmental protection plan that is acceptable to (all parties concerned) before they even survey the area.

Importantly, let the newly elected congress leaders of the concerned area and ministers take practical measures instead of giving fake statements and shedding crocodile tears in front of public.

    Jai Hind.
