Mangalore: Yaya Ind-Ya - Top five teams dance their way into finals

Mangalore, May 18: The semi-finals of 'Yaya Ind-Ya Mayaya', the first all-India Konkani dance contest, saw scintillating performances by young dancers from different parts of the Konkan region. The event was held at Kalaangann here on Saturday May 18.

The contest, which was flagged off in January this year, saw teams from Mangalore, Udupi, Goa, Honnavar, Bangalore, Kasargod and Mumbai compete in duet and group categories over a period of several weeks. The top two teams in each category from each of the audition rounds made it to the semi-finals which was held on Saturday.

In the semi-finals, the top five teams in each of the duet and group categories were selected for the finals.

The five teams that performed the best in the group category were Adwitiya Dance Company, Vasai, Mumbai, Team Kayyar, Kasargod, Drishti Art Center, Bangalore, Nayana Prasanna & party, Kumta, Honnavar and Silver Steppers, Bejai, Mangalore.

In duet category, Akash Telgu & Aaditi Morajkar, Goa, Pavintha Monteiro & Puneeth Monteiro, Kasargod, Nayana Prasanna Prabhu & Shwetha Bilgikar, Kumta, Honnavar, Shilpa Gonsalves & Shwetha K Naik, Honnavar and Gavin Rodrigues & Vaishnavi Pavithran, Mangalore won the hearts of the judges with their stellar performances.

The above teams will compete for the grand prize in the finals to be held on Sunday May 19 at the same venue. They will have to face two rounds in finals, which wil be performance on a baila song approved by the technical team and another dance to any song of their choice.

The contestants danced their hearts out to popular Konkani numbers lik 'Maka kalana', 'Payzana', 'Sangath tujo di maka', 'Tujya vengenth, 'Baila re baila' and many more, on various themes like love, 7 avatars of Durga, atrocities on women and so on.

The crowd, which was full to capacity, was treated to a variety of dance styles like contemporary, folk, hip hop and others.

The semi-final was flagged off by Ronald Mendonca, governing council chairman of Kalaangan by unveiling the logo of 'Yaya Ind-Ya Mayaya'. He was accompanied by gurkar Eric Ozario, Louis J Pinto, Roy Castelino, president of Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, Stany Alvares, president of Mandd Sobhann and Avil D'Cruz from Nach Sobhann.

Judges for the contest were Pramod Alva, finalist of national reality show India's Got Talent, Ramesh Nair, dance director and choreographer, and Chethan Salian, dancer, director and choreographer.

The contestants were judged on various aspects like grace, dancing skills, liveliness, expressions, use of props, costumes and so on.

Disha Prabhu and Maxon Castelino compered the show.

The grand finale, to be held at Kalaangann on Sunday May 19, will be telecast live on TvDaijiworld from 6.30 pm.
