Mangalore, May 19: An open well in a plantation at Derebail-Konchady here was the centre of all attention on Sunday May 19.

A sambar, which had been wandering in the area for quite sometime, was found fallen in the well.

The open well is located in a plantation belonging to Dr U Kumarswamy.

The incident came to light when some people at the plantation happened to peep into the well and found that the colour of the water seemed to have been contaminated. On a closer look,  they realized that an animal had fallen in.

The fire personnel were called immediately, and so also the police and officials from Pilikula Nisargadhama.

As the news spread, locals gathered at the spot, and together with their help, the fire personnel and Pilikula officials fished out the sambar.

The sambar which was alive but weak, was checked and treated by a vet and shifted to Pilikula Nisargadhama.

Speaking to mediapersons, Dr U Kumarswamy said, "The sambar has been wandering in the plantation for the past four years, but never caused any trouble or come across any harm. I suspect that the sambar might have fallen into the well two days ago."

Good Job by the rescue team. Glad to see that we still value nature and wild life.
But bad job by the govt. administration. The rescue team has to be equipped with proper safety gear. The person getting down the ladder has no proper safety at all. This could easily turn from a sambar rescue operation to human rescue operation if no proper safety is followed. I request the govt. administration to properly equip our brave men with proper safety and rescue equipment so that they can do their job safely. We value both human life and nature.

Late Nawab Pataudi Killed more than hundred sambhar, black-buck, chinkara and bison and displayed in his palace.. No offence whatsoever for highly affulent people..who died without having any charges..In the begginning I thought 'Sambhar' already landed in 'soup'..as it's become feast to villagers..Nice to freed them..and given her a 'new life'..!!

Mr. Bollu, If the matter had gone to Court, and defender pleaded before Hon. Judge citing that Late Nawab P. killed more than ... Sambars, so, did I,spare me too But Judge would say, had you killed Sambar in those days, may be you would have been spared, but not now! Court will punish him,
so in future no one should dare!

There are about 4 sambars in the area. We get to see it at night. Sometimes they are in the middle of the road near the DIG's bungalow / helipad. They do not trouble humans and only graze around. Conservation without planning has lead to over population of animals. Now, let us not talk of a 'sambar corridor' like the elephants !

This sambar could not have strayed from the Kudremukh hills.

Conservation has lead to over population of animals!!!??? Hitherto, I heard everyone saying, over population of human beings and spread of cities has lead to extinction of animals. First time I am hearing about over population of animals. Good news if it is true.

Why are they keeping the well wide open without any fence?. Even animals, kids could fall into it, especially during dark night.

Whether a human being or an animal... lives should be protected at all costs. It should be made mandatory to construct walls round open wells

Like a trap, this open Well is kept open!
How can some one keep open such Well or quarry without the boundary wall fencing it?
    Very Negligent!
But thank God for the good work of Fire brigade personnel, the animal is saved and the DANGER WELL IS EXPOSED!

All this time I was thinking that open wells as well as open quarries are not allowed. These were okay when population was smaller. Now there is a law that specifically says open pits as well as water wells are risky for children and they should be closed. Instead of Sambar it could have been a child belongs to local family. There is a open well on Kadri Temple New Road in middle of the road, and too risky for motorist and school going children. Nobody in the vicinity worried a damn about it. I hope Roopa Bangers will take note of this very soon. Election is over and elected official should start minding the problems of the city.
