Udupi: Boat owner's negligence puts 16 lives at risk, baby goes missing

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, May 19: In a tragic incident that took place at Malpe beach here on Sunday May 19 evening, a boat with 16 people capsized, resulting in a two-year-old going missing.

A family of six from Doddaballapur, Bangalore was on a three-day trip to Udupi. On Sunday, they along with 10 other people went boating at Malpe beach. Due to overload and because of the rough sea, the boat capsized and everyone fell into the water.

The locals as well as fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were at the spot rushed to their rescue and managed to bring them to safety. However, a two-year-old went missing and a search operation was launched. The baby, identified as Hitesh, son of Prasanna Gowda, is reportedly feared drowned.

It is said that the boat owner, identfied as Narayan, took the 16 people on his boat in violation of rules. The deputy commissioner has passed an order banning boating activities at Malpe from May 15 to September 15 due to approaching monsoons and rough sea. However, some of the boat owners have still been carrying out their business illegally.

Moreover, it is said that the capacity in Narayan's boat was only for 12 people, but he allowed 16 persons aboard which resulted in overloading and the eventual tragedy.

Fire personnel, police and locals gathered at the spot and started searching for Hitesh. The operation continued into the night but there was no trace of the missing boy.

Malpe police have registered a case in this regard. A case has also been filed against boat owner Narayan for violating rules.

Police should have kept strict vigilence to maintain the law & order since there was ban for boating. How could the boat owner carry out the business when there is ban for boating. If there is ban on boating, negligence of the district administration caused for this tragedy.

Until and unless we fear the law and the edicts of the government agencies, such actions are bound to happen. The DC should erect a permanent notice on the beach, which even the public can read and be made aware, and which clearly mentions when the tourist/fishing season is over. If not, fishermen and owners of boats will unnecassarly risk not only their lives but the lives of the public as well! DC I hope your are reading this post! Kindly install a billboard on the beach which mentions the tourist/fishing season.

Normally two to three Policemen and few Coast Guard Personnel are manning the Malpe Beach Area throughout the day time. In spite of DC’s warning if this person takes his boat means this is the pure violation of law and ignoring the order totally too. Concept of life jacket not yet implemented in our Malpe Beach and I think this is the right time to implement the rule strictly so that another incidents like this should not happens again

It is very unfortunate that an incident like this should have taken place. It is said that despite the orders of D.C. the boat carried 16 people while the capacity of the boat was only 12. in violation of the rules.

It should made mandatory for passengers to wear life jackets.

DC had banned boats carrying passengers venturing into the sea.
At the same time, DC should have ensured that Port Police or similar Govt. Official posted there to deter any of the boats leaving with people on board into the seas without permission.
Why that was not done. DC should be taken to task along with the boat owner for breaking the law and held responsible for the missing of the child.
Authorities must take action immediately so that this kind of laxness from employees does not re-occur. The fear of punishment should be instilled in all the Government employees and others too.
