Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, May 21: In yet another accident that brought to light the negligence of some bus drivers, a married couple was killed at Kaup when their Honda Activa was hit by a bus on NH 66.

The accident occured near the bypass road beside old Marigudi Temple, Kaup here on Tuesday May 21.

The deceased have been identified as Balakrishna Shetty (50) and his wife Mamata Shetty (40), residents of Tenkukere Hosamane, Padu village.

Balakrishna Shetty and Mamata Shetty, who are survived by three young sons, used to run a provisions store at Kurkalu Subhash Nagar.

Balakrishna Shetty died on the spot, while his wife breathed her last on way to the hospital. As the Volvo bus blocked the road after the accident, traffic was affected at the spot for a long time.

The couple was were moving towards their house in Koppalangady along with fruits and flowers in connection with a puja they wanted to perform at Kaup Hosa Marigudi on Tuesday, when the accident occurred.

When they were nearing the old Marigudi Temple, the driver of a KSRTC Volvo bus, in a bid to overtake a tanker, rammed into Activa.

The driver of the bus is said to have been driving recklessly.

Sadly, as Kaup's 108 ambulance has broken down, there was no government ambulance available to rush the couple to hospital. Also, it is said that passersby too did not come to the couple's rescue, and despite being critically injured, no help came for about 30 minutes.

Former MLA Lalaji visited the spot. Kaup police inspector Archana K also arrived.

A case has been registered in Kaup police station.

Accident at Padubidri - Three dead

In another accident reported at Beedu, Padubidiri on Tuesday May 21, three persons were killed when a tanker rammed into their Maruti 800 car.

The deceased have been identified as Satish Kumar (45), Aruna Rai and her husband Sathish Rai.

Aruna Rai was the secretary of Majoor gram panchayat.

They were on their way from Kaup to Kumble in Kasargod from where the couple orginally hailed. They had built a house there and were going to attend a function.

The accident occured when a tanker plying from Mangalore to Udupi rammed into their car, killing Satish Kumar on the spot.

Satish Kumar and Sathish Rai were colleagues at Lemina Foundry, Nitte. Sathish and Aruna had bought flowers for the house warming ceremony being organized on Wednesday by Aruna’s father at Kidoor, Kumble, and was travelling to Kumble with Kumar.

The couple, who were provided initial treatment at Padubidri before being moved to Mangalore, died on way to Mangalore. Eyewitnesses said their chances of survival would have been brighter, had the ambulance service and advanced medical attention been provided promptly.

The couple’s son, Sanat Rai, a mechanical engineering student at Nitte, is attending final examination of his fourth semester at present.

Padubidri station house officer, Mahadeva Setti, registered a case. Kaup police circle inspector, Shivanand Walikar, has taken up investigation.

First of all because of our massive population, 2 lane highway on each side is not the solution. I think we need 10 lane highway one each side, like they do in Los Angeles. Only difference is, unlike Los Angeles, here we need to have 2 lanes of heavy vehicles, 2 lanes for LMV, 2 lanes for 2 wheelers, 1 lane for cyclists, 1 lane for pedestrains, 1 lane for cows, dogs, cats, crows etc., and 1 lane for amubulance....

Dear Daiji Readers: In my opinion and what I have seen in DK and Udupi districts and Mysore District, Mandya District, everybody seems to be in HURRY. Road rules, Lane Discipline and overtaking at the right moment are not followed. I have been driving my Four Wheeler on National Highway NH 75, Mangalore-Bangaloe road. specially the four lande betwen Mangaloe-B.C. Road stretch, and the other State Highways, the Two Wheelers and the Autos, do not follow the highway and road rules. They enter the road in the opposite direction to save little distance and petrol, thus they endanger their lives and that of the other road user who are in the right direction. And sometimes these autos and two wheelers move slowly in the Fast lane, and the Fast Moving vehicles coming from behind are forced to overtake from the left Slow Lane.
About pedstrains, lesser is said, better it is. This Highway is provided overbridges for road crossers at Kannur and other place, which were built after lot of Hue and Cry. People do not make use of them but they cross the highway in the middle. See for your self when you pass on this road.
And we Indians, specially people of DK and Udupi are good in blaming other road users and yell at others whereas fault lies with the victim of the accident. If these type of road rules are followed by Indians in Gulf Countries, there will be more road accidents. There, we INDIANS are careful.
Sometimes accident do take place, even though the vehicle involved in accident is correctly following rules.
These are my observations during my 32 years of driving Four Wheeler in India and gulf countries and Two Wheeler in DK, Udupi and Mysore District and Mandya District.

Life lost is gone. Instead, let us follow the road rules. Save ourselves and save the agony of our family who are depending on us. JAI HIND.

It's good to "drive" on wide roads at high speeds, and probably even talk about "recent amazing development" clearly not well thought half development though. Wide roads built, speed limits put (for the heck of it), and you let everyone from tanker to cows to wander on these wide roads where people behind these powerful vehicles get an adrenaline rush. This is a clear case of India committing mistakes first and then learn from it. Why not have separate service roads running parallely, for autos and two wheelers? Why not also plan for safe exits from these high speed roads? Why treat these wides roads at par with narrow lanes of the city? Last but not least, what is that magic number of fatalities we must reach before our powers may be take this madness seriously? On heavy traffic routes (Udupi, Puttur, Dharmastala) (please, our population is not growing but exploding) plan metro service? After Perne, all road transport of highly flamable fuel through dangerous terrain should have been banned and instead routed through train. But, Perne massacre is long forgotten and those bombs with potential to destroy 10 homes at a time continue to navigate through hair pin bends.

    The Highway Authorities MUST..
Mark the lanes througout the Highway.
    RTO's should install camera's.
    Buses with speed governors.
Police should move in unmarked cars and nab errant drivers.
Police should check atleast 10 vehicles a day for their Lights including front/Rear/brake lights,Musical horns, documents etc..
Advance Warning signages about Accident prone spots,Curves, work in progress... etc

These KSRTC volvo drivers (and most of the private express bus drivers too) never bothers about the traffic. While overtaking they are bit careless about the smaller vehicles coming from opposite direction.

Forget about the road condition. There are many 'work in progress' boards in highway, which you should read as "Work Stopped".

Though it is not true in this case, there is another wrong practice among two wheelers - overtaking from the left. If you are driving a 4 wheeler, it is your responsibility to take care of his safety as well!.

    Very Sad incidents … RIP!
Usually I feel Bangalore people don’t have traffic sense. But when I visited Mangalore last week, I was in dilemma that who has given license to these idiots in Mangalore? People are not only driving fast, they drive recklessly. I strongly argue that traffic rules, Driving skills, Common sense should be in our primary education system other than studying past war dates, exaggerated kingdoms !

While I was on my way to Manipal a few days back, I too had a near death experience. A Mangalore-Manipal Bus almost killed me and my family. The Bus was being driven so recklessly that had I not applied brakes at the right time, it could have be tragic. To avoid the Bus, I almost collided into the divider. I was so shaken that I could not even note down the Bus' registration number.
Firstly, what is the administration going to do?
Secondly, is the Bus driver only to be blamed? What about the Owner/Conductor who will sack him if he drives slowly?
Thirdly, what action will the "D.K. Bus Operators' Association" take?
How about installing Speed Governors in high risk routes like Mangalore-Manipal, Mangalore-Kasaragod?
"May their soul rest in peace."
[Is that all we can say?]

Few months back privately operated vehicles that were a major cause of accidents, at that time everyone blamed them, now it is even proved by the KSRTC drivers(suppose to be safe) that they are too no less. Hope the KSRTC will try to improve the drivers skills so that they are not in any way accountable for such mishaps.

Charles D'Mello, Pangla has correctly highlighted the problems faced by locals from the police, in the event they take initiative to shift injured to a near by hospital in the hope of saving the lives of the injured.
The Police themselves never arrive quickly nor arrange an ambulance immediately when they are informed of the accident\injury.
By helping a fellow being, if the good samaritan is harassed, who will come forward to help out?
Although SC has passed a rule that those who help the injured in the absence of police will not be harassed, for police it is nothing but a statement. They have that do not care attitude towards such rulings from SC!!!
If the present Govt. can change that attitude of police, by issuing strict instruction that action will be taken against them if they harass the "GOOD SAMARITAN"...
may be some lives will be saved.

This is going to happen till -
    1. We get proper road - at least 2 lane each with Divider.
    2. Role of Trafic dept. while issuing licence, educating drivers is must while issuing licence.
    3. Favourism from Trafic dept. to Bus owners cluster or going soft in other way...... If Dept. get tougher everything will be alright.

Today we are having vihicles with powerful engines. There is time target for drivers to reach one destination to other. Heavy vehicle drivers never reduce speed while overtaking...they just want to go ahead of the vehicle infront of him. I have not seen any organisation / political party of the region talking about reckless drivers in this region. They do it and getaway with it. Life is normal for them doing this and the common people are always busy with their daily activities and act as no time for all these things.....Back to power in state Now at least congress should seriously think about finishing four lane NH soon.

This bloody ambulance will never work in our villages...!!!??? It is better police decide to give locals free hand to transfer the injured immediately to the hospital...!!!??? Unfortunately these police take more than an hour to reach the spot and they harass the locals who transport the injured to the hospitals and hence nobody comes forward to help the injured...!!!???? After the death of the injured we do not require inquiry to know how it happened, instead work for saving lives...in the case of accidents....!!!???
