Mangalore: Fr Henry Castelino passes away at 80

Fr Francis Rodrigues, Raknno

Mangalore, Jun 11: Fr Henry Castelino who is a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore and well known educationist passed away on Tuesday June 11 at 2.45 pm in a private hospital in Mangalore because of old age as well as acute diabetes. He was 80 years old and a priest for the last 55 years.

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza and Msgr Denis Prabhu the Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore have condoled his death. The Bishop said that we have lost a great educationist and active priest.

He was born at Bendore parish on March 23, 1933 as the son of Michael Castelino and Ignatia D’Souza. He was the youngest of 8 children.

After having joined St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore on June 30, 1949 and after the priestly studies, he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Mangalore on the March 1, 1958.

He was the substitude vicar of Ajekar parish from 1958 to 1962. He was a lecturer at St Philomena College, Puttur from 1960 to 1972 and from 1974 to 1981. He served as the founder Principle of St Mary’s College, Shirva from 1981 to 1991. He served as the parish priest of Pernal from 1972 to 1974, of Kulur from 1991 to 1996 and of Yermal from 2000 to 2008. He was the chancellor of the Diocese of Mangalore from 1996 to 2000. He has also served as the Episcopal Vicar for Religious and Public Relations Officer of the Diocesan of Mangalore from 1997 to 2000. Having retired from active priestly ministry in May 2008 after completion of 75 years, he resided in the Senior Priests’ Home at Jeppu.

Priest with Educational Eloquence

According to Fr Valerian Menezes, the Judicial Vicar of the Diocese of Mangalore and student of Fr Henry Castelino at St Marys College, Shirva Fr Henry is a gentle heart within but with a serious appearance outside. He looked very serious with black and white beard, black hair and spectacles. But his external appearance did not correspond with the loving personality within. He had even shed tears with the students. He always thought in terms of concern, convenience and welfare of the students. To site one example the students from Kelmbet-Belman would come to the college in a morning bus which would reach Shirva at 9.35 a.m. Inorder to make them convenient he postponed the classes to 9.45 a.m. But this brought in a difficulty in the evening to delay the classes for 15 minutes because of which some others would miss the bus. To do away with the difficulty he started the classes at 9.30 a.m. again and informed the lecturers as well as the concerned students coming from Belman-Kelmbet root that there is no difficulty even if they are bit late to the first hour.

According to Fr Valerian Menezes, Fr Henry not only excelled in academics but he promoted value education. He himself taught Moral Science in the College. On Saturdays he would take up an hour of Catechetical instructions to the students in the Church and arrange for the confession. Even though he was the principle he himself would take-up some English classes. He was very proud of his students who have become priests.

According to Fr Clifford D’Souza, a senior priest who was the seminary companion of Fr Henry Castelino was youngest in the batch. He was a very clever priest with excellent memory, simplicity, very generous towards the needy especially his students and a successful educationist in the colleges where he served. He was a talkative priest but very entertaining and would go along with anybody.

According to Ronald Moras lecturer of St Mary’s College Shirva and a close associate and fan of Fr Henry Castelino many Hindu students say that they were helped in paying the college fees from the salary received by Fr Henry Castelino. If someone would give him some gifts he would hand over them to others. He is so excellent in his academics that even with a single word in English he would speak for hours by going into its roots, meanings and socio-linguistic implications. He loved human beings and he also loved the nature and animals. He would speak to the flower plants in the garden and fishes in the well. Ronald Moras remembers that there were two owls in the college campus making the campus dirty. Once when Fr Henry was not in the station Ronald killed one of owls with an air-gun in-order to keep the college campus clean. As soon as Fr Henry returned he found one of the owls missing and cried for the missing owl.

According to Lancy Tauro a fan of Fr Henry Castelino, Fr Henry is a great donor, is a lover of the poor and helped many students to continue with their studies.

Thousands of students have studied under Fr Henry Castelino and have been inspired by his person. Ex Chief Minister of Karnataka Sadananda Gowda, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Veer Chakr Major Gen Nanjappa, A S Bopanna, J R Lobo, the present MLA of Mangalore South and former commissioner of Mangalore, Walter Nandalike, the editor-in-chief of Daijiworld.com, V U George are some of the few outstanding names among the sea of his students.

His funeral Mass would be celebrated at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia at 10 am on Friday June 14 and the mortal remains would be interred at priests’ cemetery in Valencia.

I have studied in St. Mary's College, Shirva 1991 to 1993 but just missed out to be studied under him as he retired. Girls were afraid to wear mini skirt due to his discipline. We group of boys when in PUC were not nearing around him as we were not meeting his expected 'standards'. I still can recollect old memory that one short priest principal standing in the college premise and calling misbehaving boys by clapping sounds to give them hard lessons.
We miss you dear Fr. Castelino your affection towards children.

My wife Clareen and I express our sincere condolences to the close family on the sad demise of Fr. Henry, whose obituary (above) shows how remarkable, generous and scholarly priest he was. We will pray for his eternal peace.
Fr. Henry was a member of our clan, our daiji. His father Michael (I knew him well when I was still a boy growing up in Kankanady as Mingel bappu) and my father (and my wife Clareen's paternal grandmother) were second cousins but I hardly knew Fr. Henry when he was living in Mangalore. I met him only once, at the Bishop's house just before the Bicentennial in December 1999, and that too very briefly. RIP. Mohan and Clareen.

The name "FR.HENRY CASTELINO" was so powerful to all who knew him. He had a great love and affection towards our mother (late Mrs.Agnes Misquith - 1st cousin) and always used to reiterate as his one and only sister calling her 'BAI'. He had in him unique and distinct qualities of caring, sharing and spreading cheers to all around him. We will miss you dear Fr.Henry...... The messages here reflect the work and grattitude. DW should take leadership and establish a fund in memory of Fr Castelino which can benefit the needy students across Mangalore and Udupi, which is the greatest tribute that we can pay him. I am confident of 50 lacs from his students and wellwishers. Walty can truly pay his guru dakshina that way. Thats my humble request.

Fr. Henry Castelino was one of the most pious, compassionate and committed priests of the church. He practiced what he preached in life. As a Principal, he could transform any wayward student with his dual personality of strict disciplinarian look and soft heart. What he taught in English and moral science classes still echo in the minds of his old students. We had the last privilege of hosting a felicitation function to him back in 2010 as old students of 1983 commerce batch of St Philomena and I was touched with the reverence showered on him by the non Christian students of our class. He had impeccable memory even at the last stages of life. He had truly run his race and touched so many lives in his earthly journey. May the Lord grant him the Eternal reward too. We pray for the repose of his soul.

    Dear Fr. Henry
We miss you. You were a great source of inspiration to thousands of students both at Philomena's in Puttur and at St. Mary's Shirva. Your indomitable spirit will always live among the people who were your students. You were a man for others. You served the poor and brought them up to be excellent citizens in our country and presently they serve humanity all over the world. May you rest in peace

Very sad news. I am forever grateful to Fr Henry for his teachings, especially religion class that he held just before the Sunday Mass, that has made me the person that I am today. He was very strict but a loving and generous person. He was a true scholar. I looked forward to serve at the altar during his masses. Shirva owes much of its prosperity to Fr Henry due to his being such an ambassador of education. He will be greatly missed by all. May God Almighty grant eternal rest to his soul and welcome him into his heavenly abode.

We all miss you dear father and my Prinicple at St. Mary's College at Shirva.

During my College days 1989-1991....at times in our class room he used to call me loudly "Daijja" ( both Castelino's!)for my mischievous behavior because he was our Parish Priest at Pernal when I was a Kid ( He knew my Grand-Parents and Parents very well & also my Uncle ( Dad's Bro. is the First Priest from Pernal Parish)

We deeply mourn his demise and pray to The Lord to grant him eternal peace.

He was a "Wonderful and very Disciplined Soldier and was a Great Educationist." for all Ex-students of St. Mary's at Shirva.

He was an honest and helping person for the needy, and a jovial & a great human being too. He use to share many of his own personal experiences/stories from his childhood days because his brought up was very hard and in a tough way.

He has lived his life for others!!! and was totally "SELFLESS-PERSON"

As our Bishop of Mangalore and Msgr. Denis Prabhu the Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore has said that we have lost a great educationist and a active priest.

Heartfelt condolences to all his family dear and near members.

We are deeply saddened with the sad news of our beloved Fr.Henry's demise. What an amazing priest he was.. who generously shared love of Christ with every human he encountered whether he/she is a Christian, Hindu, Muslim or any other religion. He never ventured into constructing big buildings for churches, schools or colleges.. but never failed in laying foundations of human values, brotherhood, kind-heartedness and society with high morale! Although outwardly he was a strict Principal... he never dismissed any student throughout his career as a Principal however notorious they were! Rather he transformed their lives for better and thousands of his students bear witness for this fact. Undoubtedly this world has become poor today 'cause of his passing away. We pray the Almighty God to create millions of humans like Fr.Henry to make this world a better place to live in!

Dear Fr.Henry.. we thank you for all your sacrifice and dedication and living your life to the fullest as "another Christ". We will miss you very dearly.. Adius! May your divine soul rest in peace!

Being a student of Fr. Henry Castelino, and having met him so many times after comiong to US, I simply admired his simplicity and talkative nature that made life simpler. I have known him since he used to come from the seminary to Pazer St Joseph Church to assist the church activities. The priest with the deep voice could be heard even in sleep at St Philomenas College Hostel while he was the warden. He had the dignity and honor to express what he had in his mind, even if he was wrong, but held to his views hoping to change others, as he did at Yermal church. He is one of a kind priest. one cannot duplicate him or fill his shoes. He will be missed. May God grant him eternal peace in His kingdom.

Very sad to hear about the demise of Rev. Fr. Castelino. I was privileged to be his student at St.Philomena College, Puttur. I still remember his authoritarian voice, powerful lectures, sermons, humorous conversation and a kind heart. There was a perfect discipline on the college campus when he was a Principal. Sometimes I wonder how it was possible to control thousands of youngsters, boys and girls together, by a single personality. He was serious and humorous, tough and gentle, dignified and simple, a priest and role-model, a teacher and friend.

Dear Father, You are not with us today, but we the faculty members of St Mary's College, Shirva cherish the memories of your company. You have taken care of each one of us when we are fledgling in our career path. You shared whatever you had with us. Your profound knowledge of English and Latin nurtured we youngsters. your technique of telling jokes and deciphering words is wonderful. You have tamed most arrogant students thru biblical path. At that time you used to warm us -"let you too have grown up children, I know you all will be cipher". Truly Rev Father!!! You have crossed the caste and community -line long-back but for which we all (Hindus, Christians and Muslims) yearn to see you at Mangalore and seek your
blessings during your stay at Mangalore. Your hand-holding of the impoverished, secured the life making education. Rev Father like you will take birth in millions!!! You may not be with us in flesh and blood, but you will be there in my lectures always. Rev father guide us from Almighty's land.

Fr.Henry Castelino's news of his demise was really a great shock to me.When I was studying in St.Philomena's college,he was my Warden in the hostel and also the Principal in the college.Great person I had come across in my life who was always concern about his students even after completing their studies.I really miss him a lot being a wonderful guide,a superb philosopher and a exceptional role model. Now I can only recollect my great days with him and I pray God Almighty to grant eternal peace to his departed soul and give strength to withstand the loss to all the near and dear once plus to also all his students as well.Thanq.
