Kundapur: School life turns nightmarish - Parents protest, complain to govt

Kundapur, Jul 3: Parents of the students studying in Golihole-Areshirur high school organized a protest on Tuesday July 2 against the inhuman treatment of their children by the teachers of a high school which is managed out of grants of a temple.

The venue of the protest was the premises of Golihole-Areshirur Sri Mookambika Aided High School in the taluk. The villagers of Areshirur, who had been patiently watching the high-handed behavior of an English language teacher and a peon of the school since long, have now decided that enough is enough.

In a letter written to the commissioner in the department of religious endowments, a villager named Vasant S Hegde, has stated that the school has been left to suffer on account of political upmanship. He said that the previous headmaster, Shivaram Bhat, who had been working strenuously for achieving the overall progress of the school even by spending from his own pocket at times, was transferred because of political conspiracy hatched by the managing director of Kollur Goddess Mookambika Temple governing council, Krishnaprasad Adyantaya, and teachers of this school, Vishwanath Shetty and Govind Gonda.

He has alleged that one of the teachers, Vishwanath Shetty, has been in the habit of beating up and assaulting the students at the slightest pretext. “When the parents question his behaviour, Shetty gives the stock reply that to get better marks in the examinations, there is no other go but to employ this method. A large scale political conspiracy has worked behind the silence owned by the school development and monitoring committee of the school and the concerned department about physical abuse going on in the school, which is barred by law,” he claimed, speaking to the media.

One of the students alleged that the teacher in question, Vishwanath Shetty, who has been working in this institution since the last several years, had slapped him on June 8 for not being able to memorize the spelling of a word. Since then, he has remained absent from school. “I find learning English language difficult. If a question is suddenly posed, I get confused. If I make a mistake, I get beaten up. Hence I have decided to be absent from school,” he explained.

The parents of several students want a proper response from the education department and school development and monitoring committee for such student dropouts in the face of prevalence of corporal punishment in this school. The protestors also recollect that after a girl student’s head was held by her hair and banged against the wall by the teacher, she had to be admitted into a private hospital for treatment.

When the protest was on, all the teachers were seated on benches laid inside the class rooms. But peon of the school named Ganesh, who was sitting on a desk, had spread his legs on a bench. This is just an example about the overbearing power wielded by this employee in the school. Many students say that this peon gets his work done through the school students.

“We are not hell-bent on getting back our previous headmaster, Shivaram Bhat. But we are fed up with the harassment and violent behavior of Vishwanath Shetty and Ganesh,” the students were heard pleading.

Dear all, Please do not bring any non relevant cultural or political issues. This is a clear violation of the law, where it is very specific that no corporal punishment allowed. No teacher or staff have the right to beat a child. Teachers should be sent for some refresher course, where they are taught how to deal with children without beating them. No parent likes his child to be beaten up by others.

There should be local standing committee for every school that include the local police officials and the deputy collector/Tahasildar.
Issues of unlawful harassment, academic fraud, or conflict of interest will be investigated by the respective standing panel or committee in accordance with those specific policies.

    Shetre,
The way you are commenting on all crime related incidents linking it to Congress rule I think under BJP rule we didnt need to have criminal lawyers, police patrolling, Crime news related TV shows, evening news papers etc. etc. There was so much peace everywhere, right?

What you say is very true. Modern ways are there with modern teaching methods\modern tools.
But the sad part is these kind of schools which are in remote areas and depend on aid to run it, such modern teachers
modern technology is out of reach.
    Electricity is another problem.
Unless some Philanthropist\s see such situation and come forward.
Any Government will not do much for these type of schools. the Temples which are aiding these schools will have to take up these new schemes.
Some temples are very rich. If they have the will then they can adopt these schools and bring in modernisation.

Dear Friends don’t come to the conclusion yet since Kollur Goddess Mookambika Temple Governing Council case went up to High Court for various issues. So, there are two rival groups fighting for Governing Council Posts which I don’t know for what reason? If we believe Vasant Hegde’s story for scolding Students by Teachers like Vishwanath Shetty and Govind Gonda off course we have to condemn the act only if any physical abuse of Students where by causing mental or physical torture. Otherwise Teachers have right to scold our children to bring them to right path to certain extent. I feel it is more political than academic

It seems Mr. Vasant S Hegde started political conspiracy now for silly reasons. Dear villagers some of kids need to be punished to correct them. Dont just listen to anyone and indulge in strike and all. You should be proud of that teacher who corrected your kids. Remember the pankaj udhas lines..

Now-a-days any kind of punishment meted out to students is made out to be harassment by students\parents. Parents mostly believe their children side of story.
Beating up students is against the law. Then how the teachers can punish habitual erring student? Are there any counselling cells in these kind of schools? Is it feasible to have such a department in schools of this kind or even in schools where a certain not so high fees are charged?
Without certain type of punishment i.e. a moderate hit on the palm with a ruler or a small stick, which creates slight fear if the students have not done their assignments or asking the student to stand outside the class for the period of subject which he\she has erred, makes the student realise their mistake and will be cautious next time.
This type of punishment were given to most of us, I guess, during our school days and it has worked well.
Why it should be any different now.
Present day students know the rules and are taking advantage and even go to the extent of fabricating punishment meted out or verbal abuse etc.
If such complaints against the teachers are made, teachers will definitely leave their post in those schools and it will be difficult for the school to employ another.
Ultimate loser will be the student\parents, who will have to look out for a school away from their place of residence.

In this case, the parents should meet the teacher in the presence of the H\M and or a Panchayat official and request the teacher to refrain from punishing the way he has been punishing and control the Peon.
(it so happens Peon knows more of school administration than most of the school employees\teachers!!! hence the upper hand)

If it was meted out in the past - it does not mean it was the best method. In Fact, if anything it is detrimental to the well being (mental and physical) of the child. There are better methods to teach - taking out personal frustrations on children is not the answer.

Dear Teachers, beating students is not the absolute solution. There are many ways to teach students which makes difficult subjects easy to understand. The new generation is quiet faster and advanced with new technology. Teachers also try to adopt new methods of teaching students which makes students and teachers life easy.

When we comment any private organization is well run, it is a myth. Not necessarily all govt organisation are bad nor all private organisations are always good. Carporal punishment is not allowed anywhere and punisheble by law.
