Mangalore, Jul 5: All the rivers, rivulets and streams in Dakshina Kannada district are overflowing because of heavy rains. Roads and low-lying areas have been inundated. On Thursday, four persons drowned in floods in the district, while a person lost his life in Koppa, Chikmagalur district.

Razack (20) and Ishaq (20) drowned in Gurpur River on Thursday July 4 afternoon at Ammunje near Polali. Mahabala Moolya (28) died after slipping while crossing a bridge and falling into river at Navoor in Beltangady taluk. Kalandar (21) drowned in River Netravati at Harekala near the city. A person named Zulfikar from Shikaripur was washed away at Koppa taluk in Chikmagalur district.

Ishaq, Razack

Water entered over 500 houses located in low lying areas of Dakshina Kannada district. The family members living in the ancestral house of former union minister, B Janardhan Poojary, were evacuated after their residence in Bastipadpu  got waterlogged at about 5 am on Thursday. As water level rose, the road stretch between Jakribettu and Manipalla on national highway went two feet under water. As a result, traffic between B C Road and Dharmasthala was adversely affected.

After Malavoor vented dam near Bajpe overflowed, water rushed into about 20 houses in Maravoor. These people got shelter in houses of relatives and temples. The water level near Gurpur has touched the national highway. People stranded in Uliya and Kelaginakere in Addoor were shifted to safer places with the help of locals and home guards.

Temple town Subrahmanya wore a deserted look as two major bridges leading into the town went under water.  Landslides and fallen trees created further problems at various places in the district.

Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in the district on Friday.  In many villages the residents said they are seeing such floods after about five decades. Subrhamanya received a record rain of 45 cm during the 24 hours period ending 8.30 am on Thursday. Dharmasthala, Agumbe, Beltangady, Sringeri, Karkala and some other places also registered very heavy rain. The meteorological department has predicted normal to heavy rain in the coast and some places in the southern hinterland.

Mangalore, Jul 3: River Netravati has swelled following heavy downpour over the last two days. The families close to the river in Jeppinamogaru, Kallapu, Adam Kundru, Bengre had to be evacuated with the help of fire service brigade while some of the families were shifted to safer places on Thursday July 4.

On account of the heavy rains and the subsequent water-logging in several areas across the district, holiday has been declared for all schools on Friday July 5.

Bantwal

The normal life of around 300 families has been affected in Jeppinamogaru. Agnel D’Souza, a resident of Adam Kundru said, “The level of water has increased more this time, as compared to last five years. We are used to such floods but usually the water reached our footsteps in the month of August and decreased soon afterwards. But this year the area has flooded early."

Besides, water has covered the three sides of Shree Mallikarjuna temple and Guruvana Kshethra. The residents close to the region – who are used to such floods – confidently got down to the water to collect flowing coconuts and a few of them even engaged themselves in fishing activity.

In some places like Kallapu, Patla, Bengre, fire brigade helped to evacuate the stranded residents to safer zones. Sadashiva Prabhu, assistant tahsildar who was part of the operation told daijiworld that the team has evacuated nearly 10 families including women, children and aged ones. “A few of them remained in their houses saying that there was not much rain and the water level would come down,” he added.

At Maravoor vented dam, the gates got stuck and the water level exceeded the danger mark, as a result of which nearly eight to nine houses got submerged. Both sides of Adyar-Farangipet road were covered with water. Several tent-houses made of tarpaulin were submerged. Nearly 20 families of sand miners live close to the river.

The residents and mainly the school children took boats to reach their houses which were in the Uliya, Pavoor islands.

In Bantwal, more than 30 houses were submerged and water entered hundreds of homes and shops. Transport become impossible as roads were inundated. Two persons got drowned while two others were rescued.

The fire personnel helped in the rescue efforts, helping people, especially the elderly and the children reach safety. District incharge minister and Bantwal MLA Ramanath Rai visited the flood affected areas and so also MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and former MP Janardhan Poojary.

Its really sad to see these photos of the peoples sufferings during the monsoon, and, we will see the same every year if nothing is done by the authorities to rehabilitate these people PERMANENTLY away from the river banks and low lying areas. Its high time the State Government took action rather than local politicians gaining political milage by visiting the flood affected areas. Mr. Rai seems to be getting ready for a swim while Mr. Kateel looks like he is praying to the flood waters to recede.

I am not suprised that the fire brigade is ill equipped. They dont even have a boat to carry (children, old people) in flood hit areas inspite of being a coastal area.

This really displays how the "good for nothing", "beaurocratic","retirement plan oriented", "Babu infested" National Disaster Releif agency works .

Appreciate the efforts of the fire brigade in evacuating the people in its personal capacity inspite of being deficient in basic necessities.
