Mangalore, Jul 6: An interactive session on 'Partnership and progress of coastal Karnataka' was organized by Rachana, a forum of Catholic businessmen and entrepreneurs, at Bishop's House here on Saturday July 6.

Various aspects regarding development of the coastal region, particularly the city, were discussed during the session. Rachana also handed over memorandum to the elected representatives on the occasion, with demands such as six-laning of Mangalore-Hassan highway, permission for Nano taxis, four-lane connectivity between Mangalore airport and the city, separate Mangalore railway division, tourism development and so on.

Responding to the memorandum, urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said, "This programme is a sort of wake up call to the elected representives. Feedback from people is important to us so that we can bring laws into force keeping their needs in view. The demands placed by Rachana will be looked into."

He further said that he had visited all municipal corporations in the state, and had seen that development had not been the prime motto over the last few years. "The development earlier had been commercial and not done with earnest intentions. Nothing was done purely for development. Systematic implementation of programmes is necessary," he said.

"Earlier though there were opportunities, the elected representatives only looked for temporary solutions. There was no lasting solution to problems and vision was lacking. In my ministry, there is no problem of finance, but there is lack of manpower and machinery everywhere. It is my vision to see the formation of Greater Mangalore. There are plans to include Ullal, Mulky and surrounding areas under Mangalore city corporation," he said.

Regarding the connectivity between Mangalore airport and the city, he said Rs 50 crore has been set aside for the purpose and the project will be completed soon.

On tourism development, he said, "Like Goa and Kerala, there is lot of potential for tourism development in coastal Karnataka too. Goa and Kerala get lot of income through tourism. In Goa they even study tourism in school and regular camps are held on how to behave with tourists. Foreigners are greeted with smiles in Goa, but here there are instances where they have been beaten up. This has to change. Tourism can lead to development and generate employment too."

District incharge and forest minister Ramanath Rai in his brief message assured that he would respond to the demands made by Rachana in the memorandum. "This can be made possible as there are four state and two central ministers from this region. We have the resources to fulfil these demands," he said.

Health minister U T Khadar echoed Ramanath Rai and said, "Now that we have so many ministers from this region, all these development works will happen, and if they do not happen this time, they never will."

He applauded the contribution of Catholics in education sector and said, "Whenever I go to Delhi and I say that I am MLA from Mangalore, they appreciate as Mangalore is an educational hub. The Christrian community has contributed a lot to this."

He further said, "We cannot compare Mangalore to other cities as land acquisition is needed to expand roads here, which takes a lot of time. Out of the 100 crore sanctioned to tackle the problem of sea erosion, Rs 25 crore will be released in September for the first phase of the work."

He added, "It is our duty to ensure development of the region, otherwise people will remove us."

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, who presided over the programme, said, "We must make the city beautiful. Now we see that wherever there is even a little space, a building comes up there, but there is no desire to build parks and plant trees.

"People waste a lot of time in traffic and in queues waiting for Aadhar and ration cards. We need better facilities and infrastructure so that people do not waste their valuable time unnecessarily," he pointed out, adding that the elected members should fulfil all the promises made in the manifesto.

During the interactive session with the audience, issues like live bands, gambling hubs, security of women, facilities to physically challenged and Endosulfan victims and so on were discussed. The ministers responded positively to the points raised and assured to look into them.

MLAs J R Lobo and Mohiuddin Bava were also present.

Rachana president Ivan D'Souza welcomed, while secretary  John Monteiro thanked. Dr Norbert Lobo compered the programme.

Shrinath has put forward the real facts which I observed during my last visit to Mangalore.

All that is required is the development of proper infra structure which could be the foundation to alround development.

Most important factor to be followed is the practice of "rule of law" as in most developed countries.

Absolutely right. I too agree with Srinath. Only high rise buildings and apartments would not indicate the developement of Mangalore.

When we talk about development, progress, beauty of Mangalore and its people, we should broadly differenciate between PRIOTITY AND LESS PRIORITY work and our leaders should exercise vision while uting them:

    1. Why nobody mentioned that Mangalore need a Central Market ?

    2. Why nobody mentioned that Mangalore people are not getting sufficient fish inspite of lot of money spent on fishing industry?

    3. Why nobody mentioned that Mangalore need a Central City bus stand ?

    4. Why nobody mentioned that rain and drain water is flowing on the roads and people also walk on roads ?

    5. Why nobody mentioned that dirty drain water seeps into Mangalore water wells from which people use for drinking water for ages?

    6. Why nobody mentioned that most highrise buildings on roadside has no parking areas as a result vehicles are parked on roads and that too is charged?

    7. Why nobody mentioned that multi storey buildings within city could be stoped as a solution to traffic congestion, polution and parking problem?

    8. Why nobody mentioned that why there are not many gardens, parks like Bangalore, and why some areas, like Bendur roundabout, left deserted for years which do not give a good impression to tourists ?

    9. Why nobody mentioned that We need to build a wall to the sea
along with a road(cornish), gardens and stop sea erosion in the style of Marine drive (Bombay), Marina drive (Madras) and Pondichery, Cochin ???? How long we waste money by ing stones for the sea water to carry away ?

If we are really interested in promoting tourism, this could be a great atraction.

poojaniya Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza its a good work done sir. Smilarly all relegiuos Heads swamijis of each cast group) shall conduct such gatherings which brings people and elected representatives in touch. Due to this all elected representatives will have some kind of concern about the development. This should have been done during earlier Govt. also.

After seeing this report, I sincerely urge Shri J R Lobo to be politically cautious.I have a feeling that Ivan DSouza, who was a strong contender for MLA ticket last time, has started using Rachana as the forum for his political ambitions. Somehow, he want to convince Bishop and Christian Community that he is a better choice than J R Lobo. It cannot be forgotten that Shri J R Lobo has won mostly due to Hindu Community votes. And it is always good if such programmes are organised in Town Hall, rather than in Bishop's House. My sincere request with Ivan that let him try to strengthen J R Lobo. If, there is any next chance in political postings for Christians, certainly it should go to new capable leaders who are having public liking. Ivan may not be a right choice for the time being. Ivan need to take a little gap now, and surely he will have good future, after few years.

Mr.Ramanath Rai recently made a statement regarding tourism potential in DK & Udupi. There is potential I agree but CRZ 1 & 3 should be scrapped from the coastal region, to build beach resorts. Even in areas where there are clusters of fishermen's houses , these areas are defined as CRZ 1. In CRZ 1 zone, no construction, repairs ,renovation, no land conversion can be done, thereby making these areas useless and worthless. Banks too do not give loans if the property is in CRZ 1 zone.

THE PROGRAMME LOOKS TO BE HELD FOR ONE PARTICULAR COMMUNITY. IF BJP WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME PROGRAMME IT WOULD BEEN SPELLED AS COMMUNAL, BUT FOR THE PSEUDO SECULAR'S THIS IS NOT COMMUNAL.

The meeting was in Bishops house and attended by catholic people, But none of them including the Bishop did not demand anything for the christian community. They asked for 6 lane road between hasan and managalore, 4 lane road to airport, Spead up the Adar card processing, improve the road infrastructure, plant more trees and parks.

All these demands are for every people. Not only for Catholics

We Catholics believe in development of the entire society and not only in our community.

Its good to see most of the elected representatives talking in a single tone. The misrule and some unforgivable and truly unnecessary occurances in the coastal region during the BJP era are causing all this. In a way everything happens for our good and all of it was a great lesson to everyone concerned.
