Mangalore, Jul 15: "The aim of the health department is not to build more hospitals, but to build less of them. More than cure, we will concentrate on taking preventive measures," said health minister U T Khadar.

He addressed media persons during 'meet the press’ interactive session organized by Mangalore Press Club here on Saturday July 13.

Minister Khadar briefed about the activities of the health department and said, "People should know the good things we do, the programmes we undertake, only then will they trust us. We normally used to take preventive measures for communicable diseases from April, but henceforth measures will be taken much before and will be continuous," he said.

Briefing about the upcoming plans, he said the department is planning to increase the 108 ambulance facility, and that ‘Nagu Magu’ scheme, under which the postpartum women will be taken to their homes on government expense, safely and free of cost, will be implemented soon.

He also explained about an ambitious programme of the health department,'104', under which people living in remote hamlets or hilly terrains can get information about health and preliminary treatments for ailments by calling the toll-free number, '104'. "This number can also be used to file complaints about improper maintenance and services at primary health centres," he added.

The department will also start distributing generic medicines in hospitals, and Ayush unit will be setup in every taluk. Provision of iron tablets to anaemic students, and compulsory installation of ICU and ventilors in hospitals in every taluk are some of the other plans in the anvil. The government is also planning to set up Public Institute of Health Sciences in 50 acre plot outside Bangalore at a cost of Rs 60 crore, he said.

Commenting on the compulsory rural service for medical students, he said, "Usually students had to pay fine if they did not opt for rural service after studies. But now, we have passed a bill in the last assembly session which makes 1 year of rural service compulsory for MBBS and PG students. The bill is now with HRD ministry for approval.

"The government has also sanctioned Rs 9 crore for Lady Goshen hospital," he added.

"With a view to help Endosulfan victims, two committees, namely, executive committee and enforcement committee, are formed in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Karwar districts. One committee will be headed by the district in-charge minister and the other by the deputy commissioner. The committees will see to it that the compensation reaches the victims on time without any hiccup," he said.

In his concluding remarks, Khadar said only those officials who are sincere and honest are welcomed in the health department.

Khader bai, I appreciate your idea making MBBS and PG to work compulsorily in rural areas. But you have to provide basic facilities for them to reside in rural areas. Furhther the rural hospitals nees to be upgraded. Without this how can you expect them to go there and serve.

It is a big shame on us that we are running short of funds to come up with new hospitals.

The government not completed 6 months yet and problems already started.

This is just because of the schemes been introduced blindly like Anna Bhagya.

Now there is no Money for Aarogya Bhagya.

That what exactly Mr H R Patil had suggested.Instead of giving Anna Bhagya provide poor people with safe drinking water which can prevent majority of the disease.
If people are healthy they can always earn their livelihood.
But Mr Poojary wants to punish Mr Patil which is nothing but an arrogance.

Good thinking by our Hon'ble Health minister. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. I would like to draw attention to following areas which is the real cause of many ailments which people suffer.
    1) In Tamilnadu, all most all restaurants and even road side joints use disposable plates and spoons. Why not this be introduced strictly in Karanataka.
    2) No eatable should be touched by bear hands by bearers or cooks. They must wear aprons, gloves, cap and mouth covers etc. All sweets shops, bakeries must be strictly asked follow. Else their licenses should be cancelled as they are the people who spread diseases.
    3) There should not be any open drains garbage’s anywhere. Waste disposal should be in time.
    4) In some marriages or functions we see food being served with bare hands. This should be immediately stopped. All caterers and marriage halls must be issued warnings in this regard.
    5) There should be strict control over Road side eateries to follow hygiene else they should be dealt with severely. People should be discouraged to eat unhygienic food on the road side.
    6) Use of plastics covers for pouring hot Sambars and other items should be stopped because it releases a compound called BPA which causes heart disease and cancers. Some canteens even use plastic sheets instead of cloth for preparing idly's. This is a very bad practice and should be stopped. It may be recalled that cancer is on the rise may be because of extensive use of plastics in preparation, handling and preservation of food items.
    7) Contamination and adulteration of food items should be dealt with.
If the above points are taken care off, 25 % of the medical expenditure of government will be reduced.

    Khader Bhai,
once upon our ex PM too said same way, that we dont have enemies so no need to spend on Defence and next day he woke that Chinese troops entered our democratic boundaries and that time started to search for our denfence.
Sickness and death will never give you advance notice, we all know that prevention is better than cure, but the moment person sick, first we will look for hospital, we can't wait to build hospitals afer falling sick, if we will do we will reduce our population !!

I can guess now that you are staying in Cities where there are many hospitals, and all of sudden you are indireclty saying no need to build hospitals in Rural areas?

So, back to square one. Affect of “Akki Seve” reflected sooner than later. So, the message for Qualified Doctors from our region is very clear. Don’t keep any faith on this Government for new Hospitals or upgrading of existing Hospitals, rather you look for betterment somewhere else.

It is good thought by Mr. Kader....Please educate the people what is healthy eating.....Nature cure therapy considers white rice and white sugar as poison to the body. Increase the price of that and provide brown rice and jaggery or brownish sugar at cheper rates. Promote local fruits and local produce like coconut, papaya, pineapple, grapes, sweet potato, bindi, long beans as such so many are there.....increase the tax on imported or bought from outside state products or vegetables...which are not meant for our health. We neglect our Mangoes, coconut, Jaggery, Jackfruit, papaya, watermelon and such so many and seek health in Kiwi, apple, rambootan, dragon fruit etc......we forget our walchi baji, green and red bajee and go behind spinach, celery etc. It is high time that our people realise that local produce are best for our health and made by "GOD" or whoever it is for our own benefit.
