Bantwal, Jul 17: Issues related to government schools have always been a subject of much debate. Scarcity of staff, low student turnout, lack of basic facilities have time and again come in the way of running government schools efficiently. In one such school under Perne gram panchayat limits here, students have been forced to turn teachers due to shortage of staff.

The students at Karla Higher Primary School have to pick up the chalk and teach their fellow classmates. Reason - there are only two teachers for 99 students studying in classes one to seven.

Headmistress Varijaksha and assistant teacher Babu Gowda are struggling to meticulously manage seven classes every day. Although the school was started in 1989, the government has provided only basic facilities and recruitment of additional teachers and classrooms remain the prime concerns.

Consequently, the students of third and fourth standard are made to come together for ‘combined study’ always.

The situation becomes worse when one of the two teachers takes leave for any reason. The lone teacher has to manage not only all the seven classes but all the subjects as well. On Monday July 15, this is what any visitor could see. Headmistress Varijaksha took leave, and therefore, Babu Gowda had to manage all the classes and assign some work. Apart from managing the small children of first and second standards, the teacher had to make these students follow school discipline and also look after mid-day meals for them. Besides, he had the additional duty of keeping an eye on each of them as it was raining.

All the students come from financially poor families. Of the 99 students, 54 belong to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories. The parents also know the problem existing in the government school, however, they are helpless. Although, the school welfare department is aware of the situation, they have done nothing to recruit more teachers, parents say.

When Daijiworld contacted Shesha Shayala, Bantwal block education department official, he said, “Shortage of staff has been a problem in a few government schools. We will arrange guest faculty to solve the problem temporarily. We will ensure it’s done at Karla government school on priority.”

This is very bad development since our educational priority is the most important one to comply than any other sectors. The education minister should ensure that our schools are not paralised due to lack of teachers. They can think of calling the retired teachers who are willing to work as stop gap arrangement. Please C.M.look after this on priority and urgently do the needful.Thanq.

Every year in budget govt allocates crores of Rs for welfare of education, but god alone knows where these goes. May be this reason that Dakshina Kannada SSLC result 26th position with a pass percentage of 78.77. Last year it has recorded 84 percentage(and it was top 1 in some years back). Every year thousands students get B.Ed/D.Ed course and suffers from unemployment, why cant our govt fill these underemployed to schools where there is shortage of teachers. Govt collects the thousands of money from students(and even from all schools) for the teacher training courses, but not bothered about students life's in the schools. Really we feel shame to hear these kind of case. Our D.K district has gained reputation for the education system in the India but because of our political rules now a days its in worst condition.

We have so many trained teachers without job and doing private tutions at home. Why Govt cannot employ them? In most of the schools one teacher has to handle 2 to 3 classes at at a time. On one hand Govt is saying there are no sufficient students so they cannot run the school. The ground reality is such, no parents are willing to send their children to these schools. Govt and the people concerned should take guidance from private schools to run their own schools.

    Wed, Jul 17 2013

Kimmane Ratnakara has to fill these Vacancies on a priority basis by appointing qulaified teachers from available pool, so as to ensure continuation of education to our children.

Government schools must be made more competent n efficient, to avoid Mad rush for private schools, and to avoid heavy payments for enrollment starting from Kindergarten till 12th. Many middle class families n poor families are in mad rush to enroll their kids to private schools by paying heavy fees. These families cant really bear financial burden on education. Only way to stop menace of Private institutions is to encourage Government schools/colleges/institutions.

But those in power own big colleges/schools. Can government schools get a boost under this trap ?

Big question, but no real answer.

These Teachers appointed two more teaching staff and one PT staff locally by paying from their pocket partly and partly sponsored by Arrack Shop Owner earlier and now by wine shop Owner. It’s going on for last 10 years now, ever since convent schools are established everywhere, even villagers not willing to send their children to Kannada Medium Government Schools. A subject to be made an issue?Several ways of solution,of course the prime being the appointment of full time teachers. There are educated, retired, unemployed people in the gram right. There are also clubs, associations, social organisations right. Some of them could voluntarily take up the temporary post for the sake of welfare of the students. Taking classes by students is nothing new. Even during our days, whenever the teachers were absent/shortage, the clever students were asked to take up classes or revise the taught subjects. For the sake of issue shall we call it a child labour, unpaid teacher,irresponsible...,what not.
Finally, we have to find a solution.Hope the locals with the assistence of the education DEpt. and the new Govt. will be in a position to solve this problem.

This is what exactly I wrote in other day for some other issue of Education Department in Karnataka. Government will assign only two Teachers if Students are less than 100. At one side we cry about unemployment but other side we only create problem of under employment too. Can’t they appoint one teacher per class at least? They have money for free charity but not for education? I hope Deshpande Saab will solve the problem soon. Present Bantwal MLA, Ramanath Rai toured everywhere but not this school it seems. Now few of our friends would say this problem has been created by previous Government but the answer is previous Government is no more ruling presently, go and solve it, who is stopping you……………..
