Indian arrested for filming UAE man assaulting a compatriot

Dubai, July 18 (PTI) : An Indian who filmed a senior Emirati official assaulting another Indian has been arrested by the police for uploading the video online that has now gone viral.

The 22-year-old Indian who recorded the footage and posted it on YouTube was arrested by the police and is being questioned, 7Days newspaper reported.

Police said the official's family had complained that the video-maker defamed their relative and filmed him without permission.

The senior Emirati government official who is accused of carrying out the assault has been referred to the courts.

The video shows the official repeatedly hitting an Indian van driver with his agal and punching him. Eventually, a passer-by intervenes to break things up.

Eyewitnesses said the Indian driver had accidentally cut in and hit his attacker's Lexus SUV.

The recording was posted on YouTube on Monday and went viral, with many viewers reporting it to police, urging the force to take action, the daily reported.

The man who took the clip said before his arrest on Tuesday, "I didn't plan to film it but I just felt like something was about to happen, so I switched on my camera.

"After I went home, I wasn't sure if I should share it. But then I just thought to myself, 'no one will ever know it happened. At least this way everyone would see it".

General Khamis Mattar Al Muzaina, deputy director of Dubai Police, said, "They (the official's family) are accusing him of defamation and insult. No one has the right to record any person without his permission. This man should have presented the video to police to investigate, not put it on the internet".

The official is in custody and faces a charge of minor assault. The videomaker continues to be questioned. He has not yet had any charges laid against him, Khamis said.

Under UAE law, the minor assault charge could potentially earn the official one year in jail and a maximum fine of Dhs10,000 if found guilty.

Recording without permission and defaming a person can result in a two-year sentence and Dhs20,000 if convicted, while abusing the privacy of a person and taking pictures or video without permission and putting it on internet can result in a six-month jail term.

Dubai police force is very efficient. There is no chance of bribing them or influencing them. They are impartial. There is no difference between locals and expats. In such a case, this Indian who filmed the whole episode just to gain popularity. Expats in Dubai should remember that they are not in their own country. Some months back some Indians gathered at one place in Dubai in support of Anna Hazare. Police came and action was taken against these. Nowadays, whole world is facing the problem of public unrest. People should not take undue advantage of liberty given by Dubai Government.

The Police of Gulf Countries are very strict, honest and Prompt in taking impartial action . Mistakes of drivers even during Ramadaan is not condoned there.

In 1992 December I was in SEEB-Muscat (Oman) on Visiting Visa. on 7th December 1992 about 15 Indians gathered in the main Circle and Started Protesting against demolition of Babri Masjid in India. Within 15 minutes Police force arrived there and arrested all those Indians which I saw with my own eyes. Later on that Indian Group's leader's Visa was Cancelled for creating Law & Order Problem and deported to India without caring for his plea that he was doing this for Protecting Islam in India, and he was told you can Protest as much as you want in your own Country against Babri demolition.

    Dear Francis Sir.....
I know for sure and relate with you all for your love of our country.
    Know and understand the circumstances
why many of you had to leave your motherland.Just wanted to emphasize
not only the extent of freedom in our country but also the sad fact that we take it for granted many a times! It's only when we leave our shores,do we realize how precious
    our freedom really is!
    Best Regards.

Firstly the Indians in Gulf should realize they are expats and just there to make money. You will never be a national even if you reside for 30 years. So abide by the rules were you are a 3rd rate citizen. Mistakes can happen from anyone, you have to admit it. You do not clip a car and take off without stopping, It is disrespectful & illegal. It is hit and run which is a serious offense. The filmer is paying for his heroic mis-adventure. In both the instances the expats should have called the cops and this situation would have been avoided.
