Mangalore: Niddodi power project - Locals get ready to fight

Sunil Haleangady
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 26: The setting up of ultra mega power plant at Niddodi may destroy three villages and more  importantly, the Kudubi community faces threat to its traditional practices.

On May 18, officials from the centre and the state had visited Niddodi, Tenka-Mijar and Badaga Mijar gram under Kallamundkur gram panchayat limits for survey. As the locals had strongly objected to the setting up of the plant, the officials went back.

But now, behind-the-scenes talks are being reported about strategies being planned to execute the project, which have instilled fear among the locals.

Locals suspect that the officials have purchased land from a few non-resident families by paying them money. Two influential persons had purchased land from a few families at Niddodi, and it is said that the land was bought mainly for Niddodi plant.

In three villages, majority of the land is agricultural and crops can be cultivated thrice a year. Other areas are conducive for horticulture. Most of the people living in the area belong to the Kudubi community. More than 100 Kudubi families in the area are into traditional practices like playing the gummat, kolata and others. "The Kudubi families will definitely protest against the Niddodi project," said Eshwar Gowda from Mucchur Kana in his statement to media.

In order to protect the Niddodi environment, the locals have decided to put up a fight without any indulging in politics. In this regard, a massive protest will be staged on Sunday July 28.

"Political leaders should raise this issue in the state Assembly and the Parliament. They need not come here and talk," said agriculturist Madhawa Gowda.

Kallamundkur gram panchayat has a member strength of 15, and discussions will be made during the meetings said Panchayat member Ramagowda.

Protestors have also decided to intensify their fight in the future by protesting in front of Vidhana Soudha.

My ancestral family house property situated at Kudumboorguttu near Baikampady has already taken over by the Govt.for Mangalore Harbor Project long back during Indira Gandhi/Deveraj Uras period. In that project only the middle men were made money and benefited. The original land owners were given only nominal amount of compensation But today, the property in Baikampady sells at Lakhs of rupees per cents. When Nagasthan and Dhaivasthans are shifted from one place to another we have to spend money in Lakhs for re-construction and Jeernodhara rituals. If the present Land Owners are given sufficient compensation say at least price comparable with price of: Kinnigoli,Udupi,Mulki/Suratkal which is approximately Rs. 2 Lakhs per Cents or more, Plus actual expenses for fresh construction of House, in the size of existing house,Well, Dhaivasthan,Nagasthan, Angana, compound wall Bathroom etc. seperately then people can consider the Government proposal for noble national cause,Secondly there is shortage of Labour force, and no body is willing to work in the Fields as most of the people get government subsidized essential food items at a very nominal prices. I suggest who ever is loosing their agricultural land should be given not only sufficient monetary compensation for it but also for re-construction of their house, well, bathroom, Angan, Compound wall, Shifting and re-construction- Jeernodhara of Dhaivasthan, Nagasthan and expenses actual basis. Alternatively, the Government should construct the Houses/ Row Houses independently with separate compound wall with sufficient space for growing Vegetables,Poultry Farm etc. All Nagasthans and Dhaivasthans should be constructed seperately at a distinct places to maintain the sanctity. I am a Heart & Asthma Patient and also a Diabetic, and If I visit my native place at least once or twice a year feel my entire health problems are over. The Govt.should provide Jobs for the locals effected by Niddodi project.
    Regards, Karunakar Shetty.

Tulu Nadu should be made a separate state. In tulu nadu land itself is scarce. There is so much of vacant land in North karnataka, south karnataka. Intentionally these projects are brought to Tulu Nadu. Its been a devils policy by the Kannadigas of Karnataka and malayalees of kerala to systematically destroy our Tulu Nadu from the time of independence. The only solution is to have separate state of our own - Tulu Nadu

In the name of the development the "state" are destroying the environment of the Nidoddi and surrounding areas. The Nidoddi is a place having famous for greenery and the main occupation of this locality is cultivation and people are depending on it their livelihood. Now the government is focussing development at the cost of locals cost. Don't believe this bogus and opportunist politicans _-oppositions or ruling - they are fooling the humble people and don't trust the socalled bogus and notorious "PARISARA FREMIES/OPPORTUNIST NGOs" they are claiming we are for the people and practically not so.There are examples these so called "PARISARA FREMIES" colluded with the establishment.Padubidri is the raring example of this. The local villagers must unite. There may be some agents/dalals of company/state bodies and fooling the humble and hardworking villagers.I say and you all agree " UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL ".

Niddodi is the best place for the project because the land is level and there is plenty of water. It is the most ideal place, even better than Kinnigoli. Even for logistics, it is close to the Port and coal supply would be easy. It is also close to Mangalore City and Mangalore will not have power cuts in future. In Karwar the fishermen gave up their lands for a Naval base. In Surathkal, people gave up their lands for the MRPL Refinery and for KREC, at Bajpe for the Airport etc. This is all in the interest of the State and Country.

We can live without power, but not without clean air and enough food. Already we have seen Uttarakand and Assams, we can't allow our SK to become so.Just see how the temperature of your refrigerator maintained at low temp till it contains some ice in it, you can compare this to our earth also, once polar ice is molten, then no AC even whatever may be the amount of power we got to run it can control the temp of earth from rising.

People should understand that once the project is finalised, the authorities will not take local ,taluk or dist admin into confidence during implementation of work till commissioning of the project. They will flout all rules and regulations.
This is not only the mega project, henceforth many such anti people/anti environment projects may set foot in the coastal belt against wish of the people.
I have read a write up by Sri Shetty in another web protal of Mangalore with a mention that people of Tulunaadu should work for formation of seperate state "Tulunaadu" to safe guard the interst of people here,as we can not expect good from the rulers of the state who are from above Ghats as they are least bothered about people of down the Ghats.Very important pointer to note.

There is no doubt that Niddodi is a pure gold like green belt in the dist with lot of tribals/sc inhabitents, many nagabanas, small temples, daivasthans which is heritage of Tulunaadu.Though the report on power project says that no green land will be used for setting up of the project and only barren land will be utlised, fact remains that entire(allmost)Niddodi souuroundings consists of green belt only. The beautiful crops one sees here are on the verge of extinction in the twin districts. The proposed coal based mega thermal power project is highly detrimental for the people of many villages around Niddodi more importantly the famous shrine Kateelu Sree Dugaparameshwari temple/holly Nandini river will be effected heavily.People should also understand once the government decides on setting up of any mega projects,it is difficult for the people to go against it due to various reasons.I have seen closely the struggle against Nagarjuna Power project(now UPCL) at Santhoor village near Padubidri in 2000-04 initiated by the people/seers/politicians/locals etc.,with able leadership of Sri Balakrishna Shetty of Yellur and NRI entreprenuer based at Dubai who has fought tooth and nail to stall the project but failed. This was mainly due to dubious role played by vested interests locally(suit case cultured)and a important parisaravaadi org.(avasaravaadi)
Niddiodians alone can not initiate protest plan.If the twin dists together do the protest in a joint manner along with NGOs can bring favourable result. Here there is no point in blaming any political party though this project was intiated by BJP govt lead by Shetter. Now Siddu is only doing a confirmation of the decision. It is important to note that our political leaders have no political will power(in both distriscts)and people at the helm of power are from across the Ghat. They are least bothered about welfare or have any concern about down the Ghat/coastal region as they are always jealous about us.
    ..contd..2

Our Central Power Minister Mr. Veerappa Moily has to take this issue seriously and should not allow for issue of any licence for this power project. We should be alert before carrying any infrastructural work in this area.
If we are late the effect will be the same as NAGARJUNA, MRPL OR ONGC.

Our Central Power Minister Mr. Veerappa Moily has to take this issue seriously and should allow for this power project at MSEZ area. ONGC, MRPL, area land balance is there.
