Illegal gas cylinders seized

Mangalore, Jul 26: The tahsildar and the Mangalore rural police also raided a house in Garodi here and arrested a man who was selling gas cylinders illegally.

The accused has been identified as Taranath (50).

He was caught refilling gas cylinders which he planned to sell for a price lower than market value.

The operation was carried out by tahsildar Shivappa Lamani and Mangalore rural police.

The police seized 16 cylinders of 15.6 kg and 14.2 kg each, 22 cylinders each weighing 5 kg, three HP motors, two weighing scales and five empty cylinders. The cylinders belonged to Indane Gas and Bharat Gas companies.

Speaking to daijiworld, tahsildar Lamani said that police received intimation about the illegal cylinder business carried out by Taranath and thus conducted the raid.

As many as 13 gas connections were found in his name, the tahsildar said, adding that an inquiry will be done by roping in the food and civil supplies department which would have issued the connections.

Though Taranath said that he had been doing this illegal business for 7 to 8 months, the tahsildar said that it must have been going on for the past one or two years.

"This is not only illegal but also dangerous. The neighbours or locals should have informed us, but they did not do so," he said.

Taranath was selling each cylinder for Rs 490, while the subsidized market rate is Rs 520.
