Udupi, Jul 26: In the wake of the infamous gang-rape incident that rocked Manipal, the district administration is seriously considering measures to enhance security. Udupi deputy commissioner Dr M T Reju convened a meeting with the district officials, representatives of Manipal University, CMC members, auto union and heads of other associations to discuss the issue.

In the meeting, it was decided to set up ten traffic monitoring points in the limits of Manipal University and also to install closed circuit (CC) cameras at several points. Besides, the district administration decided to install proper lights and provide unique identification number to all the auto rickshaws in order to regulate and curb any untoward incident in the area again.

Manipal University plans to drop students to their houses and hostels by security vehicle after library hours. "We will provide security vehicles to drop all students from the library to their respective houses after 10 pm," said Dr G K Prabhu, registrar of Manipal University, adding that they have increased patrolling in the campus especially in the night hours with additional assistance from police.

Notice to all bars

The DC ordered excise and revenue officials to close down bars and restaurants that stay open beyond the permitted time.

CCTV is fine. Should there be a incident for Govt to take initiatives .Why only at the place of incident. waiting for other place to happen ? may be theft? or any crime not just for rape since it was a news. What about street light on main roads of Udupi to Brahamavar. I don’t see any. Pathetic for the road TAX we pay.

I don't understand ? They talk before doing something. This is the biggest problem in India. We talk more than we do. First implement then publish...
Lights, one more joke, the road leading to MIT hostels from Udayavani press via the MIC is totally dark & all nocturnal thrive in this street!! Why MAHE has turned a blind eye to this fact??

Regarding the bars, first of all they should not be existing in a place were education is of prime interest. Forget closing them in time, they belong to the big brothers of Manipal & Udupi!!!

Nice Move but why only manipal? incidents are happening everywhere. govt should think of installing CCTV in all the areas. Udupi doesnt have alergy to cctv I believe so as mangalore. It is just that they are putting more security in the place where crime has already happend. Culprits will not be looking for their targets in the same areas right?
