Kasargod, Jul 28: Officials have confirmed that the gas containers spotted on the Kasargod sea shore belonged to the vessel 'MOL Comfort' that had sunk off the Salalah coast, Oman on June 17.

Representatives of the Nautical Institute stated that a period of one month was required to dispatch the containers but the district commissioner P S Mohammed Sagir has directed that they be dispatched within ten days.

The district administration also sought help from the Indian Navy to transport the gas containers to Mangalore port.

The vessel, belonging to the Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) Company based in Tokyo, Japan submerged off the Oman coast, broke into pieces and caught fire.

The containers and the fragments of the ship floated towards the coastal area from Karwar to Kasargod.

A team comprising Captain Allen Lobo, surveyor of MOL Comfort and insurance department officer Harsha D’Souza, forensic expert Sachidanadha, visited Kasorgod in this regard.

The team also visited to Kumble Berike, Mogral Nangi, Kottikulam and examined the gas containers. They also took the refrigerators, the cylinder, football and other items that were washed ashore a few days back.

The company experts assured that the containers were not harmful.

Officials also said that the gas containers found in Kasargod contained fuel worth Rs 3 crore, each carrying fuel worth Rs 30 lac to Rs 50 lac. Each of the container had a capacity to store 24,300 litres of refridgerated gas.

The container consisted chlorodifluoromethane or propane-22 used for refrigerators which has a huge value in the international market. Several countries have banned this gas, said experts.

R-22 (Chlorodifluoromethane)widely used as refrigerant mostly in airconditioners. But it is phased out in most developed countries like U.S due to ozone depletion which will influence global warming.Pressurized R-22 cylinders contain gas both in vapour and liquid form.Liquid form direct contact with the skin will cause severe damages even frost bite. Now a days R-22 is replaced by a new gas called R-134a which is ozone friendly. However if someone going to use this gas must confirm the properties because excessive moisture content and contamination will jeopardize refrigeration compressors and other vital components.

OZONE (Oxygen Zone)..A ozone layer is in between Earth and Sun..where in sunrays filtered by ozone layer and sent to earth. Things become worse when scientists found 'hole' in ozone layer up above Antartica. Earlier scientists thought it occured due to Supersonic Jet Fighters which are damaging Ozone Layer. Latter it's comes to know Gas which used for Refrigerant as well as CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and HCFC (Hydro chlorofluorocarbon) are damaging Ozone Layer. For that reason all these products totally banned all over.

Now-a-days even on Sprays will find content is of lighter weight. It's very dangerous fact if direct sunrays appeared from hole in Antartica..chances are more 'Ice' is going to melt which will increase sea level in coming days..low lying countries will not exist. Same what happened in Himalayan Glaciers..which affected Uttarkand recently. If sunrays not filtered thru ozone layer and appears direct to earth..chances of more of diseases like skin cancer..and plants will all damaged. Man itself is to blamed for environmental disaster...in the name of development.

    Dear all,
The gas contains a gas called as R-22, which is used as a refrigerant. It is a chloroform-fluorine-carbon. It is safe.
Although it is banned as per the present rules, many counties still use it.
It is a safe gas but, in contact with a flame, it may produce chlorine and may cause damage to the lungs and may even cause death in rare cases.
Presently, the refrigerant used are 304a etc are used as refrigerants.
    MOL means Mitsui OSK Lines.
Capt. Allen, hope you know me!
