Udupi, Aug 1: Even as the government's ambitious plan to set up an ultra mega power project in Niddodi in Dakshina Kannada district continues to draw flak from various quarters, another proposal - to convert 80 Badagabettu in Udupi into an industrial zone - has been met with strong opposition from the locals.

When Daijiworld spoke to some of the local people, it turned out that all of them objected to the government's proposal.

First, the actual issue:

In 1991, a master plan was prepared for the area, according to which, portions of 80 Badagabettu were divided into agricultural zone, industrial zone, ITBT and deemed forest. The proposal was passed in the year 2008.

Athrady, Badagabettu, Kapiyadi, Perke, Balukatta including Beerangi - altogether 282 to 289 acres - come under the industrial zone. In 1991, there were only 15 to 20 houses here. But as this part of the area is just 4 km away from Manipal, the development was drastically fast.

Now there are around 350 to 400 houses valuing at Rs 25 lac each. In 2001, before confirming the allocation of land for the industrial zone, a notice was published in an English daily stating that any objection to the plan could be conveyed to the government, but as it was published in English daily no one knew about it and hence no one objected, after which the allocation was confirmed.

Most of the developers knew that it was an industrial zone, yet they found a way to convert the land into residential plots and sold them. For conversion they went to Bangalore and got permission from the CMC.

After effect:

On June 6 this year, another statement from the industrial officer was published in the local news paper (a Kannada daily) that 80 Badagubettu industrial area will be set up soon.

This time, the impact was huge as there was political pressure as well as public pressure to stop the allocation of land for the project.

On June 20, a meeting was called where public unanimously opposed the project and accused the local officials (ZP president, PDOs and others) of deliberately keeping it hidden from the public.

"Being people's representatives it is their responsibility to notify us," they said.

M T Reju, DC visited the place and assured the residents that nothing would happen as the government will not forcibly impose any plans without public consent. However, many officials have been visiting the spot, creating panic among the locals.

Panchayat member Sathyanat alleged that the decision over the proposed plan was taken without informing the villagers; nor was the issue discussed in the gram sabha. He demanded that the government should pass a resolution against the proposal.

Residents oppose:

A few youngsters in the village said that they have witnessed bad instances of industrialization like the UPCL. "The proposed Niddodi project is also like the UPCL. In future if industries find land here they will not spare our beautiful village," they said.

Ganesh Bhat said that he stays at Kapiyadi and owns 3.57 acres of land. He is a farmer who had lost his 10 acres of land when MRPL project came into existence. "I then purchased land here some years back. Other than farming I do not know anything. We have invested everything in this land, we cannot leave the place no matter what," he said.

There are high tension wires passing over the agricultural lands here. If industrial projects are set in the villages, the residents may suffer huge loss.

Vasanth Kamath said, “It is not the matter of one family. Nearly 300 families would lose their shelter. We will never allow this to happen. There are coconut, arecanut plantations with paddy as the main cultivation. Most of the people here depend on farming.”

Panchayat president Sri Devi said, “We are trying our utmost to stop the project and will do our best to protect the land.”

“The urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake has assured to withdraw the proposal. As the issue comes under his ministry, he can initiate measures to withdraw the proposal,” said EO Manjunathayya.

Jana Jagrathi Samithi had submitted a memorandum to MP Jayaprakash Hegde at Kapiyadi Shree Durgamba Bhavani Temple on July 28. The minister assured that big industries will not come here and the government will be asked to reconsider the issue. He also assured the government is with them.

There is only one way out- Have a separate Tulu Nadu state. Not having this state is both a shame and road to destruction.

    1) As per the constitution, a group of people with separate language/langauges and distinct culture are entitled to have a separate
state. Tulu Nadu perfectly fits into this -
2)Tulu Nadu rakes in 2nd highest income to the exchequers of karnataka and Kerala ( kasargod in Kerala) and hardly anything is spent on Tulu Nadu
3)Kannadigas always have a double standards in dealing with Tulu Nadu - descrimination in development.
4)Allmost all Govt Jobs are swallowed by kannadigas. Tulunadu people do not get them
5)Although karnataka consists kannadigas, Tuluvas, kodavas, and many others, Everybody is claimed to be a kannadiga
    6) Systematically Imposing Kannada on all the people and neglecting other languages
    7) Linguistic fanaticism in Karnataka. Kannadigas are linguistic fanatics who do not tolerate other's languages
8)Injustice in the form of endosalfan tragedy for years knowingly by kannadigas and malyalis on the tuluvas and konkanas. Shifiting all the dangerous projects to Tulunadu overlooking the constitution is still continuing inclding the latestest Niddodi power project
9)Allthough Tuluvas and konkanas are forward thinking and well educated, all the key positions are held by the kannadigas
    10) Although Tulu and konkani are ancient languages, and many a rulers of south India are tuluvas ( Hoysalas, Tuluva dynasty
of Vijayanagar including iconic Sri krisnadeva raya. Tuluvas must know that kannadigas consider this great tuluva emperor an enimy of kannadigas), today tulunadu suffers from identity crisis
    11) In this large karnataka, Tuluvas and konkanas are a minority and always we know majority wins
12)Tulu Nadu does not have its own dailys in Tulu and konkani. Who will speak for us?
    13) Karnataka is the worst corrupt state in south India and constantly a victim of power struggles by the Kannada politician
    14) Tulu and Konkani are our Identity and Kannadigas even try to kill it
    15) The taxes in Karnataka are higher than other south indian states. All used for corruption.
    16) The Tuluvas and Konkanas must know that Karnataka and kerala have double standards in daling with tulu Nadu and its people. They do not
consider us their own and have devil's evil plans for tulu nadu and have a aim to destroy Tulu Nadu, its people, its languages and its culture

Inspite of this there are a few, ignorant of this injustice and own identity, would still like to be the slaves of karnataka and kerala
The reasons are, years of mental exploitation and constant brain washing by the karnataka and kerala administration.

Tuluvas and Konkanas, There are always traitors in the world. However I strongly urge Tuluvas and konkanas to unite and fight for Tulunadu, one state, one cause and one people
Do we Tuluvas and Konkanas want to meet the same tragedy our brothers and sist

80 Badagubettu's conversion into industrial zone,Niddodi mega thermal power project,UPCL project etc are the mega plans to destruct Tulunaadu in a systemic way by our rulers from upper ghat section. These upper ghat people are jealous about developed/green belt erstwhile DK dist comprising Udupi and Mangalore.
To get rid of all these maladies and to ensure safe, cleaner canara for our future geneartion, there is no other way but to agitate and demand for seperate state TULUNAADU by carving from Mangalore Udupi diss,
No other solution.Strike, agitation for atalling the mega projectss will not yield any positive results. All politicians are one in this ragard.
    Jai Tulunaadu.....

Quoting Economic Times : This year because of the good monsoon, the Rice production in the country will touch 130-145 million tonnes, a bumper harvest. The average Indian Rice production used to be 60-75 million tonnes. Storage will be a very big problem. There is also going to be bumper Wheat harvest this year. So if some agricultural lands go for industrialisation, it is not a big problem. But the compensation should be equally good from the Govt.

Industrial Development is required to develop the District and retain the Local man-power in the Dsistrict itself. Otherwise, we have to go to Mumbai, Bangalore, Gulf etc. by leaving old parents at native place. ing the place/area for Industries and type of Industries are very important. At present Agriculture has come down drastically in DK and Udupi District due to lack of labour scarcity and there is no revenue in agriculture. Good, Non-harm Industries are the best option for Udupi District.

Dear Crasta I agree with you for some extent but the reality is different.Once mega industry set up in our district it will not be employed by localites. You will find majority permanent employees from neibouring states.I will tell you the reason.Either the HR chief or the technical manager will be some Rangarajan,Subramanian,Natarajan etc.He will bring right from tea boy to engineer his people. For formality sake he will recruit few locals.Let there be industry but employ the locals maximum. There is a good reason to dump people make them unfit for the job bringing in experience issue.Well working in an industry does't require rocket science. If there is a will we can find plenty of aspirants from ITI,Polytechnics, engineering colleges as well as common graduates. It is possible to train in respective discipline.

Why you have gone to Dubai? Because, there was no Job Opportunities. Let our District grow and local people get Jobs in their own place. Nothing will happen if Udupi become Industrially developed. Leave this mean mentality. Nothing has happended to Bangalore, Mumbai etc. Some foolish people are against development.
