Mangalore, Aug 1: The young leaders of St Aloysius College students' council on Thursday August 1 took charge of their new roles in a unique manner, by pledging to initiate the first-ever anti-smoking campaign in and around the campus.

“We, the members of students' council, St Aloysius College (SAC) will take the first-ever initiative to start an anti-smoking campaign in and around the campus,” said Ponnanna K T, students' council president during the oath-taking ceremony.

Among the many plans chalked out by the students' council, anti-smoking drive topped the list. In addition, the council plans to organize road safety drive, establish no-horn zone (from Light House to Jyothi circle), plastic-free campus, clean up garbage in and around the college premises, organize flash mobs to create social awareness and so on.

“The list is drawn based on the suggestions received from the members of students' council,” Ponnana further added.

Advocate MP Noronha was the chief guest of the programme. In his address, he spoke on the topic 'Harnessing youth power for social transformation’. "It is not just the academic excellence or your marks that fetch you success - those are just a part of a long journey," Mr Noronha said.

"The lives of successful people tell you that it is only with the mixture of knowledge (academics), skills (art of presentation, logical reasoning, time management) and attitude (honesty, self-confidence, courage), we find success," he noted, adding, "As a rational human being, strive to achieve something in life," he said.

Noronha said that becoming leader is to invite more hardships. "With compliments, the leader will have to also face criticism (from the people). Think before you speak and react," Noronha advised the student leaders who were present at the ceremony.

Earlier, Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal, St Aloysius College administered the oath to the elected representatives of each batch.

John D’Silva, director of students' council, Manuel Tauro, joint director, Reshmi Peris, secretary, Hadley D’Souza, speaker were others present on the dais.

Its a good move. Though there is an indication on the cigar pack the young generation is going for smoking and ruin their health. Smoking has many effects and it reduces your lifespan. So youngsters should give up the smoking habit. Similar compaign should be done for Ganja.

Smoking can be avoided or get rid off by being sensible of self health, respecting others feelings and by advice and guidance. But what solutions do you have for pollutions due to mushrooming and multiplying vehicles on roads?

It is a serious concern that we spend hugely on expensive fuel to buy health hazardous air pollution and peace disturbing sound pollution which makes the whole generation to suffer.

Are we ready for a concept change to have solutions for the severe problems which the surface transport sector has been struggling and suffering? Do we wish to eliminate our current account deficit and increase the foreign exchange reserve?

Good initiative from the students. I have been a smoker for about 20 years. Just like most of us started as a fashion statement in the college. I couldn't climb 3 flights of stairs. I was feeling horrible. One day I decided enough is enough. I went to the office terrace lit a kill stick and started smoking. But every puff I inhaled I started scolding the kill stick. I abused it for every harm it brought to me. I told the kill stick, that because of it I lost my money, my health, bad breath, couldn't even climb 3 flights etc etc. Took the last drag and kicked it solid hard away from my life. Its been 9 months now. I feel the difference. I have run the TCS 10K marathon and now practicing to run the 21 Kilometer half marathon in Mysore to be held on Sept 15th 2013.
Dear all, I just didn't stop smoking but realized a very important lesson in life. If you make up your mind to achieve something you can. Success is indeed a choice !!! So anyone reading this please quit smoking. Not even one or two. Just Give up smoking before it gives up on you!!!

So many youngsters SMOKE ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCES in Cigarettes.
Ruining their own life and future for few hours of pleasure.
Ruining the sacrifice of their parents and elders.
Ruining and hijacking the purpose of SCHOOLS & COLLEGES for which they are set up.
Ruining the purpose of subsidies given by Govt & Tax payers for education.
Govt / elected representatives & NGO's should go to any extent to
nab, prove and punish Drug and addiction Mafia and their KINGPINS.

    Good day!
    One of the best news!
The problem in smoking is that the smokers cause irreparable damage to themselves and the non-smokers around them!
I used to be a heavy smoker once, smoking around 10 packets of Wills or Marlborough cigarettes per day.
My eldest daughter who is a Pilot of Boeing 777 dressed me down one day. My other 2 daughters joined the chorus!
(I am blessed with 3 daughters! - a luckiest father in this world)
Now I smoke only 2-4 cigarettes per day and that too in the open on the sly and not at home
    (please do not tell anyone!).
I will quit these cigarettes soon.
Smoking causes non-repairable damage to the person and those around him.
    I fully support this campaign!
    Have a nice day
