Mangalore: Battle against cattle thieves - Owners beef up security

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Aug 3: It’s not just the valuables at home that are in need of lockers for safety. The same applies to cattle also. There was a time when cattle were left free to graze, but this is no longer the case. With reports of cows being stolen in many places, the owners, with no alternative, are forced to lock their cows and the shed to protect them from being stolen.

It’s a nightmare for cattle owners. Hundreds of families have to spend their nights in fear of losing their cattle and most of the owners of cows are not rich. There are families who can think of a decent meal only with the income derived from the cows. If the cow is stolen, these families cannot afford to buy another. In addition, a few families have also discontinued animal husbandry due to these incidents.

Koragappa Devadiga, a resident of Mukka, Surathkal, proud owner of three cows - finally decided to fix an iron door to the cowshed and shackles locking the necks of the cows to the ground in a desperate attempt to safeguard his cattle.

Devadiga implemented these precautions after there were two unsuccessful attempts to steal his three cows.  Once, when the thieves were about to shift the cows to the vehicle in the night, the noise awakened the family. When Devadiga came out of the house, the thieves reportedly fled from the scene.

Modus Operandi

The cattle thieves are engaged in stealing cows and have a well-planned modus operandi to escape. It is believed that two people first reconnoiter the place they are targeting. Once they are sure that there is no police or any fringe group blocking their way, these men give a signal to the cow transporting vehicle.

Confirmed reports state that a few dimly lit places close to Chokkabettu, Thokur, and other places in the vicinity have been used for cow slaughter. These abattoirs usually go unnoticed.

Five cases in one month

In Suratkal alone, as many as five cases of cow theft have been reported in the last one month. These healthy and expensive cows are slaughtered for meat. However, there has been no clue as to who the thieves are.

Theft of Jain Basadi of Moodabidri is solved within one week even though it was a very difficult inter-state theft. Because there was high profile pressure on the Police.
In this case of Cow theft the owners are poor people. Even after daring five cases of theft within one months the Suratkal police could not catch the thieves inspite of so many clues, proves that Police are hand in gloves with thieves.

If you go out on a morning walk or towards Chowpaty to have 5 Rs Goli soda Sharbat or 1 rs Charmuri Channa, people cannot tell that Jossey is a abandoned Human being. In farming centric areas there is something called leaving their cattle to graze by themselves not tying them 24/7. Its unfortunate that people run them over or lift them just to have some cheap beef in your plates.

Insurance companies should take this opportunity and popularize Cattle Insurance among the people. So far only if there is a Bank Loan against Cattle, Fawls, Pigs, Rabbits, Sheep/goats, Emu, etc, then only Insurance Companies Cover these live-stocks with Insurance. Hence forth even for live-stock without Bank Loan also should be Insured.

At least cow owners can keep their cows within their property instead of spoiling the environment and avoiding the cows wandering in the road.

Alternatively, sell the cows to Kerala, where the tasty beef is available without any ban.

Our laws are very weak. The poor/middle class people who rear cows for their livelihood/supplement additional income in rural/semi urban areas should form local committes including people from all religions to work as watch dog againsst cattle thefts.Whenever the thieves are caught red handed, people break their legs and then handed over to police. This will send a warning signal to cattle thieves and deter then from venturing into cattle thefts. This is the only way to deal with the situation.

I remember my granny, how much she loved cattle, even if she forgot to have her lunch she never forgot feeding the cattle. Even if she had to go out for a day she made sure cattle were not going hungry. Those days the house was filled with pure milk, butter milk, desi ghee..moreover she use to manage entire house budget just selling excess milk.We grew up feeding on this. After school in the evening our first job was to get fodder grass for the cattle, if no grass no milk lol...Now a days hardly we see anyone rearing cattle, even they are rearing they have to lock them..how sad...

Robbery, theft case is the violation of both moral(God's Law) and government law (One's National Law).

Both the laws are bound to a citizen.

GOD'S LAW IS CLEARLY A VIOLATION 6TH COMMANDMENT.

If the Police & Judiciary are acting upon promptly theft cases of any kind can be contained.

POLICE SHOULD NOT ACT ON COMPLAINTS OF RELIGIOUS POLICE. POLICE SHOULD ACT, TAKE ITS OWN ACTION WITHOUT THE INTERFERENCE OF ANY.

Moreover we have theft cases can be stopped by making free of cow slaughter permits.

The beef has become costly so the thieves are making easy money. Government must think of how to reduce the prices of beef by free flow of beef from other states so that the robbery can be contained.

People should boycot consuming beef products. Cow slaughter is illegal in karnataka, and with the menance of moral policing no one is ready to sell old cattles. These beef traders are trying to be in the business by stealing the cattles. Muslims should understand that consuming beef of stolen cattles is haram for them. Once the Khalifa Umar (RA) heard a complaint that one of his companions goat was stolen and he immediately told his household not to buy goat meat from market, lest in ignorance he may consume it. He didnt eat goat meat until the goat was found...Today I have taken an oath not to buy beef from illegal vendors and illegal slaughter houses..

Shahnawaz, it may be haram for the seller but not for the buyer, if it is stolen one. Customer paying money and buying the meat and they no need to know whether it is stolen or halal one. This is problem of trader. cow owner should make proper cattle house with lock and key instead of blaming thieves.

The BD army is active only if they can beat up the driver. The motive of BD is not to save the cows but to beat the people who transport them. They never check who sold and who bought them but they simply stop the vehicle and beat up people and then call the police to protect themselves from further damage.
If the motive to protect the cows was active then nobody will dare to steal the cows from a cow shed but will approach the owner at day time and close the deal. There are many cases where the BD took protection money from the cow slaughter areas.
There is a procedure to transport cattle and the health department at Taluk office and police are not interested to issue such permissions but only ready to arrive if the BD call them.
All this put together the beef become expensive like gold and people started stealing the cows from road side and now it is sad that they reach village homes. People should prepare some devices like’Rat Trap’ so the thieves can be caught and kept away from such incidents.

These people want to fill their stomach by stealing and other kinds of illegal activities only. Even if they are caught, they come out in a few months and back to their business of criminal activities. There should be a strict law to punish them so that this menace will be wiped out permanently. These activities are the root cause of communal disharmony.
