Udupi, Aug 3: A second-year polytechnic student allegedly committed suicide as he had failed in five subjects which made him ineligible to continue to the third semester due to the present carry-over rule.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Kumar (20), son of Sundar and Pratibha Jatanna, residents of Sagri.

It is said that Santosh Kumar hanged himself in his bedroom and the incident came to light when his parents called out to him and got no response. On opening the bedroom door, he was found hanging.

Angered by the incident, the students of polytechnic colleges, who have been protesting against the present carry-over rule over the past few days, rushed to Manipal hospital where the body was taken. They staged a flash protest and demanded an immediate change in the rule before other students take such extreme steps.

The students said that despite sending appeals to the DC, the MLA, and the government, there has not been a single response to their demands. The students called upon the DC to take immediate action.

"Santosh ended his life just because of the present carry-over system. If immediate action is not taken to resolve the matter, we will show our power," said Prasanth, one of the protestors.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, who visited the spot, tried to calm down the students and said that appropriate action will be taken in the matter. He assured the students that he would convey their appeals to the education minister and will also coordinate with the police in finding out the actual reason for the suicide.

The protestors also gathered at Tiger Circle and staged a dharna. Traffic was disrupted for sometime. Manipal police led by inspector Ravikumar arrived at the spot and tried to bring the situation under control.

Manipal police inspector Sadananda Tippannanavar warned the students that it was illegal to protest without official permission. The students also held a protest march to DC's office.

On Thursday August 2, the students had gone on a day-long hunger strike demanding change in the carry-over system, which prohibits a student from continuing to the next semester if he or she has failed in more than four subjects.

    Good day to all!
I recommend you read the book 'The Road less traveled' by Morgan Scott Peck.
The first sentence is Quote:" Life is difficult" Unquote.
    How true!
Since you all readers have internet access, please read the letter by Abraham Lincoln to the school teacher about his son. It is a lovely letter.
It is precise, to the point and very educative.
I have a copy of that letter with me and read it whenever I feel depressed.
    Have a lovely day!

look u all people our main fight is for the valuation of over ans papers. if a student expects more than 60 the result will be below his expectations or fail .. and while we ask for xerox copy, we will get ans sheet xerox of some other student.. u can never think about the situation of us.. just look at the result, in a class strength of 60 students only 5- 6 clear all the subjects rest with 8-12 below 4 odds.. this shows the valuation of our ans papers.. if so speaking of carry over system in degree there unlimited carry over but no only 4 subjects carry over given to Polytechnic students.. think of it which is harder to study degree or Polytechnic??

Sorry to hear he sad news!
I completed my BE at KREC (now NIT) Surathkal back in 1971.
In my days, we never had problems like these. Nobody committed suicide.
But taking ones life in his/her own hands for trivial reasons like this is unacceptable.
One should strive live to see the next day.
Life throws lots of challenges at you - be brave to face them!
I have lived in this world for 62 years crossing immense hurdles.
I had more than 1000 reasons to commit suicide during my life time but came across them bravely.
Hoping that I wake up tomorrow - that is the only prayer I say to the GOD of mine.
    Have a nice day!

Who says Nothing is impossible - I am here for the last 50 years doing nothing! I read this slogan on a T shirt. The students want to do nothing, no studies, no exams. If they get a purseful pocket money why they want to study and later work? Kala kettoithu. Naavu kaliyuvaga heege irlillappa.

So work hard concentrate and shine. No one can go thru and successfull pass 11 subjects w/o first getting thru the first 5 Concentrate less on social activities and girls and yur future is in ur hands Good Luck to all Students

The new rule should be applicable to the 2013-14 batches and not the second year onwards. Government should look into it.

I Feel very bad after watching the
    video,the behavior of the students
    like blocking the road,shouting
    slogans.Students please concentrate
on studies. You will know the real
value of life when you come out
from the college with a degree in
    your hand.Another thing there is
no question of canceling this carry
over system because in one year you
fail in 5 subjects, then next year
how you are going to pass 10/11
    subjects.It is highly impossible.

you fail in 4/5 subjects and still want to move to the next year, ridiculous. what will be the qualification of such passed out students. first of all the idea of having the system of carry over, should not have been introduced at all. The ones in the photos, clearly appear to be fun loving guys, coming just for time pass and have absolutely no seriousness about study and now when it comes to go to the next year, they want sympathy. guys first study then go for party, fun, picnis, bunks, protest by ABVP ETC

Why to carryover. Now a days question papers can be purchased. We have to pay every year. If we fail first few years, and if we buy question/answer paper and pass last year we have spent only once and take the final passing certificate. No need of carryover or subjects.

A polytechnic student has to go through all 12 (6 theory and 6 practical) subjects in a single week to pass out to the next year, which is very tough, unlike B.E. students they have a privilege of semester sessions. It is better govt has to consider the students plea.
    May his soul RIP.

Oue education system should be changed, wherein the students are given grades and course completed certificates and no "Fail" remarks. Most of the western collages give the students certificates of completion. After all education is not judged by marks-pass or fails in life . It is something more valuable. Our education Ministers wake up and implement good human friendly system. We need our children to grow, shine and take the challenges...but not fade away like this !!

today you protest to remove carry over system. tomorrow someone ends his life to remove all exam systems in school, college and universities.

then why schools, college and universities?? just to enjoy life?????
and why DC, MLA has to interfere in this matter.
Those who struggled they passed there exams and got better life,
one person fails and ends his life does not mean entire system you have to change
exams shapes your future, makes you disciplined.

Life is full of struggle. if student not strugle how he will understand the importance of life.

if you dont want exams you dont need to come to colleges. there are so many institution which gives you fake certificates. you can throw money you will get.

I fail to understand their demand..
If a student fails in four subjects which shows his inability to cope up with the studies already on hand.
Then how any student will cope up with these four subjects and the studies of the next semester.

I feel the demands are unjust and interferes with the studies of other studious students with these kind of agitations.

it is better for them to find out from the student as to why he failed in four subjects.
If they keep participating in all these agitations and bunk classes, naturally they will fail in all subjects..

I know it is very difficult to study but even as a politechnic student nothing is impossible in this world. No one has become famous without struggling.
