Mangalore: Fr Stanislaus R Pereira passes away at 88

Fr Francis Rodrigues, Raknno

Mangalore, Aug 6: Fr Stanislaus R Pereira (mostly known as Fr Stanly Pereira) who is a priest of the diocese of Mangalore passed away on Tuesday August 6 in the morning in Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Aged situated in Bajjodi-Mangalore because of old age and physical weakness. He was 88 years old and a priest for the last 60 years.

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza and Msgr Denis Prabhu, the vicar general of the diocese of Mangalore have condoled his death.

He was born at Kemmannu parish on November 13, 1925. After joining St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore and after the priestly studies, he was ordained a priest of the diocese of Mangalore on April 7, 1953.

He was the assistant parish priest of Karkal after the ordination for 6 years. Later he was the assistant parish priest of Derebail for 2 years, Cascia for one year and Bantwal for 2 years. He was the founder parish priest of Pakshikere for 11 years from 1964 to 1975. After being the director of social communications for 6 years, he was the parish priest of Bendore for 6 years, Udyavar for 7 years and Kallianpur-Milagres for 10 years.

Because of health reasons he voluntarily retired from the active priestly ministry in 1994. As retired priest he was residing at his family house in Kemmannu for 12 years and then offered spiritual ministry for 7 years (2006-2013) at Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Aged.

'He was ready to work for the good of the diocese of Mangalore. He co-ordinated his activities and programs with the will of the superiors and looked ahead in view of the progress of the people’ said Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore.

'He was a friend, philosopher and guide to the people of high and low profile. And as to guide people he has undertaken journeys after journeys across the state, nation and globe’ said Msgr Denis Prabhu, the Vicar General of the diocese.

'As spiritual guide at Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Aged, he was very jovial and spiritually insightful man. For 6 years he was going around meeting and speaking to the aged people of our home. He would crack jokes with them. For the past one year he could not move much because of his ill-health’ said Sr Marie Ann of Little Sisters of the Poor, Home for the Aged.

Fr Stanislaus R Pereira was a courageous priest, learned thinker, famous preacher and an undisputed leader much sought after by the people. People would approach him for any compromise and settlement as he had spell over men and matters.

As the founder spiritual guide of Catholic Sabha of the diocese of Mangalore he has nurtured it from its very infancy and given great orientation. He was one of the pioneers in getting the Deepika High School started in Modankap as assistant parish priest. He created Pakshikere Shrine out of nothing. From his very younger days he was able to solve many intriguing questions.

Even though he was not a medically qualified person he was known to be a person who has healed many persons especially from physico-psycho-spiritual sicknesses. He could liberate many people from superstitious and pristine beliefs.

His funeral Mass would be celebrated at St Jude Thaddaeus Church, Pakshikere at 10 am on Wednesday August 7 and the mortal remains would be interred at Pakshikere church cemetery.

Wow, what a praise for Fr. Stanley Pereira on the news of his death! I know him personally very well and inside out after he sued me in Bandra court, Bombay even after apologizing for publishing letter to the editor related to his dealings in Pakshikere and even though my newspaper publication jurisdiction was Mangalore.

Harassed me for three years and finally made me to apologize on front page of my magazines - Mithr Weekly, Jhelo Fortnightly and Kannik Monthly for consecutive three times. As a result I lost my business and had to close my all three periodicals in 1977. Still, I did not keep any grudge on him and when we started Catholic Sabha of Mangalore Diocese, I worked with him and I was the Vice President of Catholic Sabha. May his soul rest in peace.

Very sad to hear the demise of Fr. Stanly as he was fondly called. I saw him in Udyavar as a parish priest for 7 years. My mother knows him since a very long time as a child. He was famous for Paksikere church activities. I visited the Paksikere parish with my dad as a kid and influenced with the charismatic activities he was doing for the Mangalore diaocese and locals and its people irrespective of religion cast etc. He was good for his sermons. He was a spiritual guide those who are in need. May His soul rest in peace . Condolenses to his bereved family. Really noteworthy for his long priestly ministry. We miss him really.

Fr Stanislaus Pereira is a Charismatic priest. He was a zealous priest. His contribution for the diocese and people in general great. He was evangelizing through religious films, which I still remember. Once he had come to my village and there were more non-Christians to watch and to appreciate. May his soul rest in

Fr Stanley was the parish priest of Milagres-Kallianpur for three years between 1994 and 1997 and during this period he reorganized the devotion to Our Lady of Miracles in Kallianpur parish. He built a beautiful outdoor shrine to Our Lady of Milagres which stands as a witness to Fr Stanley's zeal and devotion.
Right from his younger days he was unconventional in his ideas and would venture into fields where others would fear to tread.
Great soul, Fr Stanley, we salute you.

Father Stany Pereira was a peoples' man. Lived for the people and cared for the people irrespective of caste and creed. He was gifted in many ways and he had the powers also to caste away evil spells in people. He did a wonderful job in Pakshikere Church where people used to gather in hundreds to attend the services that he conducted.

A Holy and dedicated person as he was he helped the needy people in several ways and gave charity quietely. Simple as he was in his ways no one would realize that he taught in United States for while. In appreciation of the services people helped him financially and he would utilize the money to attend to the needs of the poor. I had a very special regard for him and I was indebted to him for praying over me. It was sad to see Father Stany - A SHADOW OF HIS FORMER SELF being a resident at The home of The Little Sisters of The Poor where he was cared for and loved. For the past several years I would go to see Father Stany at his residence with a cake to wish him on his birthday - on 13TH. of November and it was my intention to do so even this year on my return to India in November. Father Stany had lost his memory... he did not know me when I would go to to wish him on his birthday. That did not matter to me and I continued to know him and visited him faithfully on every 13TH. of November.

May his soul rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear the sad demise of Fr. Stany Pereira. A great man has passed away. This simple and down to earth priest will be greatly missed by all who knew or heard of him. Fr. Stany is from Byndoor, One of his sister (Precilla) was my teacher and one of his younger brother (Micky) was my classmate. Fr. Stany was a priest when I was just two year old. He used to visit his parents few times a year and we as young elementary kids run behind his Motorbike up to Holy Cross Church to attend his mass. Fr. Stany came for my mothers' funeral in Udupi, on April 11, 1998 and gave a very touching eulogy which is still fresh in my mind. Thank you Jesus for the gift of Fr. Stany to your priestly ministry during our life time. May God grant him eternal bliss.
    Sincerely: William, Clifford & Rocky.

Rest in peace Fr. Stanly Pereira.
I was small when in the late 60s' in Barkur, we used to hear about the exorcist powers, spiritual prayers/healings taking place at St.Jude's shrine, Pakshikere. In those days people used to take the sick by pvt.vehicles as transportation was not available like today. Within short time Pakshikere shrine become very famous. I had the opportunity to visit & pray in the shrine only in 2008. About Fr. Stanly I did not hear for many years. Today when I read about these messages I could analyse how far and great physical/spiritual healer he was. Last year in Mumbai we lost
Fr.Rufus Pereira. What Fr. Rufus was to Mumbai people similarly Fr. Stanly was to the people of Mangalore. They have touched vast people's lives. May good Lord BLESS their souls.

Remembering Fr. Stanley with lots of love, esteem and respect. He was courageous man with wonderful human skills and compassion for the good of people that he served as their spiritual leader. He has left unforgettable impression of his character all along wherever he went. The article on his life on your page has elaborated briefly of his life as a pastor. His endeavour for spiritual renewal was great. He was a fine musician and always got involved with the good of the suffering flock and help them as best he could. Being a family friend we were fortunate to experience his extra ordinary love to propagate life is worth living and continue to do good for each other as a priority. Fr. Stanley was a skilful peacemaker in the community and particularly family feuds. Bringing harmony and happiness was one the goals of his illustrious life with people.

May the Lord receive him to serve Him in heaven for eternity. May he rest in eternal peace of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ.

m deeply saddened by news , memories of his association in udyavar and kallianpur church r very fresh , infact we use to fear him as he was strict and serious . but besides it he was a good orater , theologian and spiritual healer . he practised exorcism initially with deep faith amd adoration . He was distinct in style of function and a great visionary too 。 we r gonna miss u father and may ur soul rest in peace .

Very sorry to hear the sad demise of Rev. Fr. Stany Pereira, former parish priest of Pakshikere, who was a humble and great supporter to the poor and needy. He always had time to listen to those who came to him with their problems and sickness and above all that was the golden period of Pakshikere parish. This simple and down to earth priest will be greatly missed by all of us.
May God grant him eternal bliss.
