Mangalore, Aug 9: There are plans to start a new a 250-bed multi-speciality unit at Wenlock hospital and increase the number of beds from 704 to 1,000 in the present hospital, said minister for health and family welfare U T Khadar.

He was addressing a meeting after his visit to Wenlock hospital with a team of officials from Bangalore here on Thursday August 8. The team inspected the hospital in view of the requirements needed to uprgrade the hospital.

He also said that the emergency unit of the hospital will also be upgraded. He asked the team to give more priority to ventilator facility, upgrading of surgery unit, establishment of hi-tech lab, better mortuary, cancer centre, psychiarty ward, prisoners' cell and so on.

Khadar said that based on the report submitted by the team, appropriate steps will be taken to upgrade the hospital in the lines of Bangalore's Arogya Bhavan. It has also been decided to grant facility of 1 ambulance for every 50,000 to 60,000 people, he said.

Polyclinics in Mangalore and Ullal

With the aim of reducing pressure on district hospital and to provide free medical facilities to people of all walks of life, the state health department has decided to open two multi-specialty hospitals in MCC limits and Ullal TMC, said U T Khadar.

It has been decided to establish a polyclinic at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore in Ullal TMC and worth Rs 20 crore in MCC limits. This is one of the ambitious projects of the central government and plans are also afoot to open a polyclinic at Bangalore, Bagalkot and Mysore," he said.

Addressing the mediapersons at a press meet on Thursday August 8, he said, "It has been decided to establish a polyclinic at a cost of Rs 9.5 crore in Ullal TMC and worth Rs 20 crore in MCC limits. This is one of the ambitious projects of the central government and plans are also afoot to open a polyclinic at Bangalore, Bagalkote and Mysore," he said.

Staff in the polyclinics will be hired on contract basis and these will have a paediatric, gynecologist, orthopedic and physician and also a good lab testing facility. All polyclinics will be computerised, so that patients can get their reports online. A team from National Health Mission has arrived in the district to survey Ullal and Mangalore City, he said.

When asked about the derogatory remarks made by the Assembly speaker against Rani Abakka, minister Khadar said, "I was not present during his statement and hence the matter has not come to my notice. Organizing a protest against it is of no use, instead, it is important to tell him about the achievement of freedom fighter Rani Abakka."

Another hospital at Vamanjoor

As the number of patients coming to district Wenlock hospital has increasing, the pressure is more. In order to reduce this, there is proposal of building a well-equipped hospital at Vamanjoor. Already land has been identified for this, said minister Khadar.

MLA J R Lobo, Dr Ananth Narayan, nodal officer of national rural health campaign, Nischith, local leaders Eshwar Ullal, Santhosh Kumar Shetty among others were present.

To all those talking about UT Khadar's attire - please lets just concentrate on his work, responsibilities and his attitude towards the society and not have debates on what he should/shouldn't wear in his public appearances. We must learn to appreciate his efforts, determination and honesty.

There a lot of Union ministers who dress in an inappropriate manner and still get away.

No patient can be admitted in Wenlock Hospital without a BPL card. The Health Minister must clarify this point.

Mr. Khader dress is clean and he is a real minister. It does not matter how any one wants him to be dressed up or if he is wearing sport shoes. there is no end to these kind of comments.
He has already made impact on all hospitals and there is good response from the earlier lethargic medical staff, to give better service to the public.
As this is only the beginning, certain things will definitely take time and people should comment more politely.
If you guys are capable of evaluating a Minister's work in just a couple of months of his being there and belittle him then why did you all keep quiet for the last 5 years when almost nothing was done at all?
It is a change over from another party Govt. and definitely it will take more time to take over. Everybody knows things were not going well during the earlier Govt.
Present Govt. Has to take up for all that lapses, (repair) set them right and then proceed with their plans.
Give your support and we will be better served.

Simple, please do not evaluate a Minister just by photographs and tall statements. Ground reality should be checked and evaluated. Lets hope for the best.

It would be nice to see Karnataka's Health Minister visit Hospitals like a Doctor and not like a ward boy. It would be pleasant to see a well dressed Minister.

As a Health Minister of Karnataka, I personally feel that U.T.Khadar can dress up a little better, like Mr.J.R.Lobo. A Health Minister should not go around Hospitals in sports shoes and must keep up the dignity of his office.

In hospitals, its better to wear shoes for contact precautions. Its is a silly thought of yours not to wear sports shoes as long as it is appropriate & comfortable for one to walk

Having new multi specialty wing, machines etc is fine. But what about the maintenance ? Half the time the X-ray machine at Wenlock is out of order and patients have to be taken elsewhere. The Blood test lab reports cannot be relied upon and have to be done elsewhere. This is the pathetic situation.

Unless a patient has a BPL card they cannot admit in Wenlock Hospital.
