No thermal plant will be initiated at Niddodi: JP Hegde

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

New Delhi, Aug 22 : In a significant development in the Niddodi power plant project, Udupi - Chikmaglur MP J P Hedge has assured "there will be no thermal plant in Niddodi, not even an initial process has begun."

JP Hegde recently met the union Power minister Jyothiraje Scindia and handed over a detailed letter opposing the project at Niddodi, explaining the impact of the project on the people of Niddodi and its surroundings.

The minister has reportedly given a positive assurance to the MP, and said that a meeting will soon be organized along with the MPs, MLAs and the concerned minister of Karnataka state to discuss the issue further.

"Among the several other reasons for opposing the project, some of the main reasons are the loss of agricultural land in the area; the depletion of water in the river Nandini and the disastrous effects of emissions from the plant to the ecosystem. The proposed project will take away fertile agricultural land from the farmers in the area, and draw water from the river Nandini for cooling the plant," he said.

"In a largely agrarian district, it will be impossible to sustain if such a project is implemented due the devastating consequences on the environment and the agricultural lands. The effluents such as hot water, coal dust etc. will cause irreparable damage to the sensitive ecosystem and environment in the entire district. In fact there is already another operational power plant within 10 to 12 km radius. The environmental damage by establishing an additional plant in this region would be unsustainable," JP Hegde explained in his letter.

JP Hegde strongly recommended another site for the plant other than Niddodi. He also urged the minister to hold discussions with public, MLAs, minister of state and MPs with regard to establishment of the plant elsewhere.

I AM AGREE WITH THE INNOCENT PEOPLE OF NIDDODI & SURROUNDING VILLAGES. FIRST MP’S / MLA….. ETC SHOULD MAKE THE NIDDODI AND SURROUNDING PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ABOUT THERMAL POWER PLANT. IF ANY POWER PLANT /ANY OTHER PLANT COME UP WITH PROPER WAY, THERE IS NO HARM TO ANY ONE / NO HARM TO ENVERONMENT. IF EVERY ONE RESIST LIKE THIS FOR UPCOMMING PLANT IN OUR TWIN DISTRICT, OUR CITY WILL NOT DEVELOP AND AFTER OUR CHILDREN STUDIES THEY HAVE TO MOVE TO OTHER STATES FOR THE JOB BY LEAVING THEIR OLD / SICK PARRENTS ALONE. EVERY PARENTS LIKES THEIR CHILDREN TO BE HIGHLY QUALIFIED AND IN A HIGH PROFILE JOB. AFTER THEIR STUDIES THEY WILL NOT WORK IN FIELDS AND IN OUR CITY THERE IS NO INDUSTRY. SO, FOR THEIR CHOICE OF JOB THEY HAVE TO MOVE TO OTHER STATES BY LEAVING THEIR OLD /SICK PARENT ALONE AT HOME. ALREADY IN OUR CITY THERE IS POWER CUT, FROM THIS WE ARE ONLY AFFECTING AND MP/MLA …..WELL SETTLED PEOPLE ETC, THEY HAVE THEIR OWN DIESEL GENERATOR AT THEIR HOME.
IT IS MY HUMBLE REQUEST TO MY TWIN DISTRICT DEAR PEOPLE, DO NOT RESIST FOR THIS POWER PLANT, INSTEAD OF RESISTING, REQUEST THE MP’S MLA…..ETC TO COME UP THIS PLANT IN THE RIGHT WAY LIKE TATA ELECTRIC THERMAL POWER PLANT IN MUMBAI, AND NOT LIKE A UPCL IN PADUBIDRI. OUR UDUPI PRESENT MLA MR. PRAMOD MADWARAJ HIM SELF IS AN ENGINEER FROM NIT SURATKAL AND CAN EXPLAIN THE PEOPLE OF NIDDODI ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF POWER AND NO HARMFUL TO ANY ONE /ENVIRONMENTAL IF IT COMES UP IN THE RIGHT WAY.

No Thermal Plants can avoid air pollution, or water contamination by 100%, whatever modern technology the coal power industry claims.
Collect data around any Thermal Plants of diseases directly by the result of pollutants of power production like- asthma, allergic skin diseases & cancer with any other power plants using Green Power Sources, then decide whether visible pollution or invisible pollution kills the earth or its inhabitants, who have lost their Freedom to live healthy, to Money Bags of Big Industrialists!

15 days back I went to Thermal Power plant at Kudthini - Bellary to Purchase one load of Fly-Ash required for our Hollow-Brick unit. I could not get it because A.C.C. cement factory at Tondebhavi near Bangalore purchases the entire Fly Ash by booking it one month in advance. I also could not find trace of even a bit of fly ash on the trees within that Power plant at Kudathini or surrounding area, because they have fixed precipitator which never allows fly ash to got out with smoke from Chimini. Fly Ash is transported in a Closed Tanker similar to Petrol Tanker and nothing spills on the road while transporting. Why same technology is not used in UPCL Padubidri or Niddodi ?

    Praveen-
You can contact UPCL to get your fly ash, as there they have abundant quantity of it.
If no fly ash is left un-utilized then why they need 1000s of acres of land to dispose of it?- Million Dollar Question unresolved till today!

Yes P. Kumaresh you are right, JP Hegde and others should first pressurize UPCL at Padubidri to adopt same modern Technology like Bellary Kudthini or Raichur to stop spilling of fly ash in the atmosphere in Yelluru and Mudarangadi area. I understand that ACC has set up a new cement plant named as ACC Coastal Cement Ltd at Padubidri to fully utilize fly Ash of UPCL, but because that multinational company refused to give any party fund as demanded by former Industry minister Nirani this Cement Unit is stalled since two years. Corruption is responsible for all evils.

At least a strong statement from Udupi MP on this subject. Only thing is that he should connect with the chief minister of Karnataka who d similar strong statement couple of weeks back as Power Plant will be uted at any cost at Niddodi. So now, should the public listen to MP and feel relax or should we listen to chied minister and continue the protest ? Better MP should connect with Chief Minister and ask him to give similar assurance.

Commentators here say the project can be shifted to Bidar and other places there around where it DOES NOT Rain much and farming is not a major.
But at the same time they forget, for a thermal plant abundant water is also necessary for cooling which is scarce in those places and may not be feasible for such projects.
That is why these projects are preferred in Coastal areas where sea water can be used for various requirements in this kind of project.
They also may have thought, if plant came up at Niddodi, power transmission could be easily done by connecting to the already existing grid at Udupi and the cost would come down considerably.

Yes there are soo many barren places in Bijapur, Gulbarga, Bidar where there hardly rains.
first govt has to aquire certain amount of land and keep it aside in each district only reserved for industries.
it is fully wrong to first announce the project then plannning to aquire the land. people in sorrunding areas will definately object giving enviornemntal excuses.

govt has to be strong in industrialization else this Rs.68=1$ will reach Rs.100=1$

peole want 24hours Fridge on, 24 hours Light on, 24 hours TV on and all luxury they need .but they dont want powrer project...how is it possible.

Dear Mr.Roshan there may be farmers and paddy fields in niddodi. you can find farming land everywhere in india. so where does these industries go???????? on mooooooon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
moooon is the only place where you will get barren land.
it is true that here and there you can see some paddy fields greenery around Niddodi but most of the place is made of Solid Rock..
Niddodians are telling they have land but dont get labours to cultivate the land.....

I am surprised to see that such a small public protest prevented our representative to stop such a big project.....

this indicates that our elected representative are not so strong to attract any big investment.

in this case i am admire of Modiji..... who doesnot care anyprotest if it is against his industrial revolution

our representaive should learn something good from Modiji.....

Who said Bijapur Gulbarga or Bidar is Barren ? Their Agricultural production is more than in DK-Udupi ,and Goa is fully dependent on Fruits & Vegetables exported by these districts. Goans are lazy like Mangaloreans when it comes to hard work in the agricultural fields or Mining companies.
Some thermal plants have to be near Port because of dependence on imported Coal. If the so called Parisara vaadis had not stopped Ankola-Hubli Railway line then Coal based power plants could have been set up in Dharwad or Gadag districts too as the imported coal through Karwar Port could have been transported cheaply by Railway. So, blame those fake environmentalists from North Kanara for all the problems of Niddodi.

Let's not bring any political comments of either BJP or Congress or any other party for these kind of burning issues.

It must be a win-win situation for both for the "Locals of Niddodi" and the same power plant has to be relocated at karnataka itself because today the need of the hour is "Power".

Karnataka is having deficit power genearation as per state's demand and supply mis-match and without power there won't be much industrial growth or developmental activities can take place.

Thank you Mr. J.P. Hegde for all your efforts so far in convincing our young and dynamic Union Power Minister Mr. Jyothiraditya Scindia and see to it that this same power project should not be shelved out of Karnataka and relocate the same plant to have it in a place which will cause minimum harm to the people living at the surrounding area.

In the long run thermal plant is causing irreparable damage to ecosystem and environment, for whose benefit this thermal plant is initiated?
Some selfish politicians have pushed this project for their personal gain!
I am sure, no sensible economist would suggest this project at this site.
If the ecology loss is more than the Power that it would generate, this project would be a utter disaster!

Invest Quarter of the money proposed to establish the Thermal Power Plant at Niddodi in Solar Power Generating Plant, which emits no smoke or poisonous chemicals into atmosphere or won't pollute the river or ocean.
It never needs thousands of acres of land to dump mercury laden ash.
Use Solar Power to generate peak requirement at day time & use other sources at night times.
Green Power Generation is only Logical & Life Sustaining in the Longer run.
