War of words in Lok Sabha over Cauvery water dispute

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI):
The issue of disputed Cauvery waters today led to a war of words between members from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the Lok Sabha.

M Thambidurai (AIADMK) raised the issue of reported construction of projects on Cauvery river by Karnataka.

He said since there was dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on the issue, there should be no fresh project without consulting the lower riparian state.
Terming the reported construction as a violation of the federal structure, he demanded an immediate intervention by the Centre.

T R Baalu (DMK) also wanted to raise the issue, but Speaker Meira Kumar reminded him that he had given notice on Katchatheevu.

Raising the Cauvery issue, members from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu rushed to the Well raising slogans against each other.

They withdrew for a while, but returned raising slogans. Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP) raised the issue of 17 backward communities which were included in the list of Scheduled Castes in UP.

He said the previous SP government had added them in the SC list but the move was revoked by "the other government". He was apparently referring to the BSP. He said the Akhilesh Yadav government has once again included them in the SC list and the resolution has been sent to the Prime Minister.

Yadav requested the Centre to take an early decision on the issue. S K Bwiswmuthiary (Bodoland Peoples Front) demanded creation of separate Bodoland state. Several members from Bihar and Madhya Pradesh raised the issue of floods in their regions.

    Great Indians (mentality).

Better to merge Tamilnadu with Karnataka, then this war of words will stop. One Super State and one people. Let us share whatever, we have (in times of good & bad) with each other and resolve the issue.

These goonda politicians fight for little water from reservoir built long back on one river. There are so many rivers in both these states which can be utilised as water resources. None of these goondas have ever taken any trouble to build more dams and preserve water. The money they have made by sharing the money reserved for various developmental projects could have built at least a dozen dams all over both the states. Instead, they keep fighting and pull the crowds also into the fight saying that we should not share the water. Why are they not pulling crowds to demand more water projects. Useless bunch of rogues!!

I am for peaceful settlement of caaveri water sharing issue.
Both the governments’ secretaries should sit down and discuss to share water crisis.
If Karnataka is facing scarcity of water/failure of rain how Karnataka can release water from the Dam.
Population has increased in both the states. The extent of land cultivation also has been increased in both the states.
At this juncture both the states should shun their selfishness/political differences and sit together to solve water sharing issue.
I am for peaceful settlement of caaveri water issue.
    Jai ho Karnataka.
    Jai ho Tamil Nadu
    Jai ho Bharath.
