First consignment of fish from Mangalore Airport exported to Kuwait

First consignment of fish from Mangalore Airport exported to Kuwait

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 5: For the first time since the official announcement of air cargo facility at Mangalore International Airport, 0.600 ton of pomfret fish (maanji in Tulu) was exported to Kuwait recently.

According to J T Radhakrishnan, Mangalore Airport Director, 12 packets of approximately weighing 45 kg each were shipped through Air India Express flight.

This could be encouraging news for fishermen in the coastal district, and also to farmers who grow various fruits and vegetables.

The quantity and frequency is expected to increase in the coming days, especially in fish export.

Now I am all the more confused with these spelling mistakes - this time from you and that too as you were commenting about someone else' spelling mistake.
It's best to correct and read as we are not the best of typists and make lot of grammar mistakes too.
These kind of mistakes are very common here.
I hear from people working in Kuwait that there are two or three types of pomfrets available in Kuwait.
One is Local which I heard is very tasty and very expensive too
secondly from Iran which are less expensive and
then from India and other places which are not so tasty and less expensive.
    Is that information correct?

White Pomfrets (Pampla)imported from India (Gujarath) are cheaper in Chicago than in Mangalore. $6.50 per pound or around INR 900 per Kg. Black pomfrets (Sorngula) $4.50 per pound or INR 700 per Kg. Pampano (Pomfrets from Philippines) are $2.00 per pound or INR 325 per Kg.

Export of pomfrets from Mangalore is not economically feasible business as there is a good demand in Mangalore itself. Mangaloreans should consign the fish catch from Gujarath for a cheaper price.

All the developed countries sell the best quality food for their citizens first. Incase any surplus will be sold other countries. But in India it is opposit and all the good, healthy, and quality food sold to other countries. Indian will get only low quality, junk food. What a great thing........

This is good news. The promfret rate in Kuwait had gone up to Kuwait Dinars 9 per KG.(1KD=Rs230 now). Now it is above KD 6/-.

We may not get chance to eat unless we know the location where it is sold. Do anybody know where this exported fish from Mangalore is sold? I don't think it will be sold in fish market(Sharq or Fahaheel), may be in Lulu Hyper market?

    Fact,Mangalore- you are right.
In many countries it is prohibited to catch or sell small size fish.
In our seas I have seen small & variety of fish that has no market is caught & sold to fish meal or manure producing Industries in a large number. These are food for bigger fishes, which are deprived by these clean sweep.
We pollute our waters by rapid industrialization & pesticide contamination. No Wonder fish will be a rare specie- only might get served in Star Hotels in future!

I have seen best of basmathi rice in Gulf cdountries and U.K. Such quality many have not seen in India. Now pompret's turn. Already good sizes 1100 to 1200 per kilo. Sone pe suhaga now export to Kuwait. Middle class will enjoy pomprets in photo in future. Congratulations foreign ex earners. We the Indians are very happy with the leftouts.Anyway we do live with leftouts by the Britishers.

    Fact (finder), Mangalore.

Appreciated your concern and also the reasons you have explained therein.

Fish is damn costly and in short supply. Mutton beyond ordinary peoples reach. Cattle slaughter is facing tough opposition from....
Vegetable (onion, Tomatoes, green chilies etc.)Prices breaking the price barrier. Income is not ascending in line with cost index. It's a tough time for law & middle income

Too many questions/concerns but now answers.

Marine life is in danger! Trawler huge boats sweep all the fish in one go in one visit. Fishing is a big business and its vast. There several huge trawaler boat in coastal karnantaka, which sweep the fish much more than expected and dont provide enough time to breed for new fish. Marine life is in real danger, wake up mangaloreans rise up your voice on this. coming decade we shall see the defecit in Marine life and it effects ecology big time. Other thing is we common mangalorean is not able afford rich fish from past 4 to 5 years due to high price and scarcity. Goverment should intervene marine life is a natural resource of India, there must be some regulation like 50% catch must be reserved to the local people because its kind a staple food for coastal people. Goverment do provide subsidy and benifits to fisher busninessmen like disel, ration etc.. and tax them who is having multiple huge trawler boats.

Export is good news. In the short term it will give rise to price escalation in the local market. However, the good old principle of economics, demand vs supply would prevail if supply increases. Some of the money made from exports could be fuelled back to ways of increasing the growth of fish and not just rely on increasing the catch. Air India express is in service for more than 2 years and by now the export economy should have grown to cater to this new market afforded by this means of transport. Infact, if the exports increase, Air India could think of a dedicated cargo plane as well. All depends on the vision of Mangaloreans and how they make the best of this opportunity. Exports cheifly depend on quality and any attempts to make quick bucks by shipping poor quality products will hit us only.

In Kuwait Fish is available abundantly but the price also co related. Can you imagine KD 6/-per KG Promfret, Prawns (off season) KD 3 - 4.

It is true that there is enough supply and some type of fish sooo cheap like Sevte, Lepo and smal fish.

Now the question is, to import fish from Gulf, depends on the local price and ex-rate against Fgn. ccy/Rs. It is not going to work out. Also the taste of Gulf fish and imported from India, there is big difference. We do not need to eat quantity but the quality and taste of Indian fish.

Well export of anything from India is good news for the rapidly deteriorating rupee. But there is a hitch, how does the administration supervise or moderate what quantities or percentages can be exported? Well as a norm a certain percentage is reserved for the locals which has to be monitored by the district administration and only a certain percentage can be exported.I hope the intelligent officials of our administration ensure that such exports do not give rise to high costs of the fish in Mangalore

Yes indeed it's a "Great News" for our coastal region. Not only fish, vegetables and fruits etc. too can be exported even other parts of the globe in the coming days.

Instead of passing silly comments, people of the region should take it as a positive initiative and broad mindedly to grow in business. This should have happened long back. Anyways better late than never.

We must thank the all those people who are practically involved in this project to see the light of this day. Exports are always the back bone/strength of any country.
