Udupi, Sep 5: G Shankar Family Trust and Udupi district-level Teachers' Day committee together organized a Teachers’ Day programme at Shamili Hall on Thursday September 5.

The programme was inaugurated by Vinay Kumar Sorake, district-in-charge, after which he said that this day is celebrated in memory of Dr S Radhakrishna.

“Like him, all teachers should be responsible for the better future of their students.  They should be polite, kind, knowledgeable, and take care of their pupils. Teaching is a selfless profession which will help society build a better future. Shaping students the right way is an art by itself.  In Udupi, the ratio of students to teachers is 23:1. The district is well-set academically as well as in extra curricular activities too and the credit goes to the teachers,” he added.

M L Samaga, retired principal, MGM, said that teaching is a profession which needs commitment at all times. “A teacher should stand as an example to the students not in his lessons but in his life as well,” he added.

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said that winning awards is not that important. “There are more efficient teachers than those who win awards, and the aim should be to be a teacher praised by all,” he said. Further he added that the salary of the teachers will be increased soon as the government is planning welfare measures for teachers.

On the occasion, Samaga and 21 other aided and unaided primary and high school teachers were felicitated.

If teachers at the primary level play the maximum role in building the personality of an individual, then why they are paid very poorly? How many youth are taking up this noble profession? What are the facilities in schools around the state for teachers? Why they have to work at homes which affects their private life? Why they are used for census, election duties and all government work at cheap rates? A teacher works from morning till night. Nowadays, because of mobile phones, the parents call the teachers even after school hours and at night- why? Some people may say that they have holidays of more than two months - but ask the teachers, how many extra hours they spend every day in correcting the exam papers at home, making the summary, making up the charts, project works and now trainings for everything. Some times they have to also assist the midday meal serving also.

Why talk this big thing and then humiliate them on every day basis by torturing them. Compensate them well. In my opinion, they should get highest salary than the professionals because they are building the professionals from their young age with knowledge and character. I salute my teachers who advised me, corrected me, taught me the values of life and life skills, encouraged me to accept failures which lead to success. Thanks to my teachers that I am a Chartered Accountant and heading the Support Services of our Group companies.

While looking teachers..we recall our school/college days..where in we never allowed teachers to teach at class. Most of the time we are suspended..and out of school/colleges. Mostly our name is to appear in Notice Board often about our suspension..and after sometimes we should pay penalty for our wrong-doings. We are so notorious our name known upto the Principal. At that time we didn't comes to know of our fault..now we feel bad. Not able to turn towards school/colleges once upto now after completion of studies. May be upto now they all become 'old and retired'..
Wish all teachers.. a Happy Teachers Day.. give them good health and prosperity.
