Mangalore Airport gets safety boost: DGCA approves 'AirCon-2100' system

Media Release

Mangalore, Sep 6: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has received approval from DGCA for commissioning of state-of-the-art technology-based automated air traffic management system 'AirCon 2100' at Mangalore international Airport. The systems procured from Indra, Spain had to undergo vigorous safety assessment and extensive trial operation in shadow mode before its commissioning.

The AirCon-2100 is one of the most advanced automated air traffic control system which meets International Civil Aviation Organization's standard and recommended practices in air traffic management. The system enhances the safety of the flights by providing the air traffic controllers with information of air movements from radar, flight plans, direction finders and air-ground data link messages (ADS/CPDLC). It also provides high degree of automation of the control tasks with flight plan management tools, automatic flight tracking system, automatic coordination between control positions and control centers, safety nets, medium term traffic conflict
prediction tools etc.

The system is capable of processing data from other radar feeds like Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum etc and display at Mangalore to increase the area of radar coverage. The control tools provided by the system assists the controller in decision making and judgment for safe handling of traffic and reduce their workload.

The air traffic controllers get warning whenever the safety of aircraft is going to be infringed (due to collision with another aircraft, terrain proximity heading towards danger prohibited area, deviation from cleared level/route etc.) Control tower can monitor aircraft profile during the approach and landing and advise the pilot if he is dangerously positioned while approaching the runway. The system will enhance the overall safety of air traffic control operation at Mangalore International Airport.
