Bantwal: Wedding trip turns tragic - Youth washed away in Netravati river

Daijiworld Media Network – Bantwal

Bantwal, Sep 9: A youth was swept away by strong currents while bathing in Netravati river at Sajipa Munnur, Manjalpade here on Sunday September 8 morning.

The deceased has been identified as Praveen Kulal (20), from Kadeshwalya.

The three others who had accompanied Praveen - Kiran Amtoor, Ajay Honnavar and Kamalaksha, luckily escaped. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

It is learnt that Praveen visited the place to attend his friend Harish’s wedding which was held at Kateel. After the wedding ceremony, lunch was arranged at a wedding hall in Melkar. On the occasion of Harish’s wedding, Praveen went to his residence in Manjalpade on Saturday evening. Once the wedding party left for Kateel for the ceremony, Praveen along with Kiran, Ajay, Vijay and Kamalaksha went to the river to take bath.

While bathing, Praveen was swept away by the strong currents of the river. Although Kamalaksha tried to rescue him, he failed. Kamalaksha who got pulled in by the strong currents was pull rescued by Vijay, Ajay and Kiran. He was later taken to a hospital. Even though the locals and fire department personnel launched a search operation, Praveen’s body could not be traced.

Praveen was working as a welder in Mangalore. Earlier he was working with Harish in Madikeri. Praveen took his relative Vijay to Harish’s house to attend the wedding.

He is the eldest among the two sons of Chandrahas Kulal and Baby.

Police arrive late

Even though the incident took place at around 8 am, police arrived at the spot only at 1 pm, whereas the fire department personnel who began the search operation at 9.30 am went back at around noon as they felt that the searching with their boat was not possible.

The locals expressed anger against the police who arrived late and the fire personnel who left the place without searching much. Even after the fire personnel left from the place, locals continued the search operation till evening. But they did not succeed in tracing Praveen.

A few years ago four people lost their lives in the same Manjalpade Netravati river. Speaking to reporters, boatman Ismail who was present during the incident said that he saw the youths in the water and went towards them in his boat to warn them. But before he could reach them Praveen was washed away. "If I could have reached them two minutes earlier, Praveen could have been saved," he said.

Ayes, do you think our Police and Fire Brigade personnel would jump in the water and save lives.
They are only trained to fish out dead bodies with rope and stick wearing helmets……..

Flavian, Mangalore/Kuwait : If you inform police/fire brigade prior to incident its appreciable because we do not know what is (incidents) going to happen in the future, if you know you can inform police/fire brigade etc. etc.. This is not my or/and our conclusion to do this, it may be your conclusion. I am talking about late arrival of department for about 6 hours, why government appointed departments? To arrive after 6 hours!!! Whatever Government is paying to the departments. It is tax payer’s money (it is our money).

Dear Flavian & Ayes, Indeed very sad incident, a young fellow lost his life! but I don't understand, why both of you landed into argument. "Only God can save our life and if it is God's wish to save us, he will save us anyway"! Comments are only our concern / feeling about the incident. If it was God's wish to save him, Ismail would have reached there 2 min. early or other boys only would have saved him. We are only like dolls in God's hand, he can make or break us! As Flavian said, no use blaming Fire brigade or Police & at the same time, we can not take it so easy if it happens to someone our own! We may wait there in vain or sit there whole night in panic, thinking what went wrong etc., Flavian comment is reality and Ayes comments is with emotion! Both are reasonable, Calm down guys..., let's pray for his Soul, "Rest in peace" and may God give strength & courage to his family to bear the sorrow in this terrible time!

Next time the police/Fire brigade should be informed prior to any incident and they will do their best. This is the conclusion to those who try to defend or any proxies who are defending Ayes's comments. Do not try to drag-on.

    Enough.

Flavian, Mangalore/Kuwait. You defended the police and fire brigade for late arrival around 5 to 6 hours, when people inform them (police and fire brigade) they should try to arrive on time and their intension should be to save some one (whether they save or not save that is different thing) but not to arrive after 6 hours of incident. I do not care about AGREE or DISAGREE about your/my comment but fact of the matter we should highlight something correct to the people. I am in Saudi Arabia it is not my responsibility to come and save. If anything happens in front of me I will try to save them.

Coast of mangalore is steep- continental shelf.
Young men dying is great for the nation -state and mangalore other than the pain -sorrow and agony for the family.
    How and why?
time to introduce- Bay watch , have ex-naval divers to set up watch towers across the coast for safety -security -vigilance.
Also introduce swimming courses compulsorily in schools -
Set us shops selling all accessories - costumes - equipments used for seafaring- surfing- swimming- and all kinds of water sports.
But this is the responsibility of the city for the lives and safety.
So , start teaching-training-guiding the youth all precautions -mark the water with Buoys.
    all safety measures.
work on these issues rather than wasting time in bickering politics.
    Life is precious.
spend time fruitfully on issues of developt -growth -progress thus prosperity with QUALITY.
The citizens should also propose valued /useful suggestions to the city/municipality.

    Ayes,

If you are in front when someone got drwn you will try to save that too if you know swimming.

People who were around tried to save his life but waiting for fire brigade and police to save how many hours required.

Your logic, you better keep with you. you are argueing something which you cannot defend. You want fire brigde and police come and save the life. where are you.

i wonder Why do indian cops requires all police constables at police station, Higher official should fix those constables at high risky places where has lakes, rivers, dams there should be a routine patroling, here if we implement such rules we can help peoples to aware about high risks.
